9. Amelia Martin [1824-1886].AMELIA MARTIN registered daughter of Mary Martin and Frederick PEARCE.

QUERY? RE: PEARCE by Kerry Cranney Email: [email protected]

A HENRY PEARCE (1785-1833) was a Lieutenant in the Navy when tried at Warwick Assizes in 1815 and given a 14 year sentence. He arrived on the "Ocean" 1816. In 1821 (Victualling List) he was employed at Pennant Hills. Obtained his Ticket of Leave Lane Cove district 1823 and received an assigned convict. He is mentioned in the book "The Convict Timbergetters of Pennant Hills". He is listed in 1823/24/25 General Muster of New South Wales as HENRY PEARCE, Shingler, Lane Cove. With him at this time are his 'wife' Mary, born in colony and children: Richard (6) Frederick (4) Mary Ann (12) ? possibly 12 months not years.

I suspect that this family were actually Mary MARTIN (nee RANDALL) who had children by the same name and ages at the time similar. Mary MARTIN'S youngest 5 children were born at Pennant Hills placing them at the right time and place to be those living with HENRY PEARCE - ANY COMMENTS WELCOMED! We know JOHN MARTIN did not recognise these younger children as his own (his will indicated this. MK).

With HENRY PEARCE having a son named FREDERICK, there may have been some confusion made by the informant on the Death Registration of Amelia BOWERMAN (nee Martin) regarding father - Frederick Pearce, woodcutter ? - SHOULD THIS REALLY BE HENRY PEARCE, Shingler/Timbergetter? [K.CRANNEY]

Due to registrations already recorded with information and taken as gospel the TRUTH will never be known, however I feel it is a good scenario. What do you think or know ? [M.KENNEDY]

On checking the 1822 General Muster & Land & Stock Muster of NSW - John Martin is listed living in Parramatta and Wife Mary (BC) with children John Martin (15) ? Martin (14) and 3 others as John Martins children. In 1823/24/25 General Muster NSW Archives records - p.384: John Martin constable in Parramatta listed with Wife Mary and children: John Martin BC - Henry Martin (9) Sophia Martin (14) Frances Martin (12) Hannah Martin (7) Richard Martin (6) and Frederick Martin (5) - No record found of Henry or Frederick Pearce on these Musters. [M.KENNEDY, Ballina NSW].

An 1847 map of the Common (Hornsby Shire) showed only two settlers on this common ...Mary Martin, widow with 12 children, daughter of Black Randall, who had lived since 1844 on approximately the corner of Burns and Fiona Streets Beecroft. [ref.Hornsby Shire Pioneers book. M.KENNEDY]

The 1847 Deed of the Common was in Isaac Shepherd's hands and in 1874 the Common was resumed by the Government, surveyed in 1886 and opened up for sale 1887 -The land on the corner of Boundary Road and Victoria Road Pennant Hills.
