General Notes: Husband - J.H. Gooch

Chuck,

Your information is very helpful. I had seen some of it, but not all of it. I will check into it further, but I just want to send a quick reply to awknowledge receipt. Yes, it is quite possible that the Jessie Gooch who married Bessie Fannin was my grandfather. I have been trying to get more details about that. It is an interesting possibility that she may have died not long after they married. If that is the case, then he probably married again, to my mother's birth mother.

Thanks much for the info, and I will be back in touch after I analyze all this.

God bless/
Ray

Could the Infant Son Gooch who died 13 Jul 1903 have been their child? If so, maybe Bessie died from complications arising from childbirth. Could your mother's mother have been Jesse's second wife?

General Notes: Husband - James Gooch

James Gooch (abt 1759 - abt 1820)

NOTE: THIS FAMILY CONNECTION HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN

James Gooch was the fifth and last child born to William and Keziah Ann (Hart) Gooch. It is not known for sure, but his mother may have died giving birth to him, or from complications of child birth. In any case, it seems that she died shortly after he was born.

Details on the life of James Gooch are sketchy. It is documented that he was an heir in the estate of his father, William, when he died in 1802.

He married Elisabeth Kelly in August, 1785, in Caswell County, NC. The 1800 Census records shows a James Gooch family living in Spartenburg County, SC. By that record, it would seem that James and Elisabeth started a family soon after they married, but there has been no record found of the births of their children, and many of them remain unknown. It is probable that they lived in some remote pioneer region the late 1700's, where no records were kept.

There is a record of James living in Williamson County, Tennessee from 1805 to 1809. He shows up in the tax rolls there, paying a poll tax. There is no record of him owning land or other property there. He probably lived on the property of one of his brothers, David or Thomas. In about 1810, he left Williamson County, Tennessee to go to Kentucky (what is now Allen County). In 1812, he shows up in the tax rolls for Robertson County, Tennessee in 1812, again paying a poll tax, with no record of property ownership there.

The records for Allen County, Kentucky were destroyed by fire. Some in the family believe that James Gooch settled there. I believe that he probably stayed there for a few years, then moved on, possibly back to some remote area in Tennessee. Most family records show him as dying before 1825. It seems that everyone loses track of him, for all practical purposes, after 1812.

It is believed that James Gooch had at least two children, sons, William and Tillman. There were likely other children. In the 1830 census for the Spartenburg District of South Carolina, there are several Gooches (spelled "GOUCH") listed. Names listed are: James, Jesse (2 listings), Levi, and Delila.

His son, William, is also shown in the 1830 census for the Spartenburg District of South Carolina. In that record, there were three young children in the household, who seem to be William Martin, James, and Rebecca. Tilman Gooch shows up in the census for nearby Rabun County, Georgia. It is probable that some of the other Gooches living in the Spartenburg District in 1830 were also children of James and Elisabeth Gooch, but there is not enough information to form links. An older woman, assumed to be Elisabeth, then a widow, was shown living in the home of either William or Tillman Gooch in other documents from the early 1830's.

The birth place for William Martin Gooch appears as Tennessee in later reports, which indicates that the family of his father, William, lived in Tennessee during the early and middle 1820's, before they moved to South Carolina.

In summary, James Gooch seems to have been a free spirit - an adventurous dreamer and a wanderer. He probably didn't fit in very well with the others in the family, who may have looked down on him, for "lacking drive and ambition". He didn't seem to have the drive to own land and other property, as the others in the family did. That is unfortunate, because it seems that better records were kept on land in those times than people. Census records of that time do not show names. The best records which mention names are found in estate records, and it seems that James may not have had an estate to pass on to his heirs when he died.

05/16/96

The 1800 Census for the Spartenburg District of South Carolina shows a James Gooch family, which seems to fit the profile. Details are:

1 male 26-45 (husband, James, would have been about 41))
1 female 26-45 (wife, Elisabeth, would have been about 40)

1 male 10-15 (unknown son, possibly Thomas, born between 1785-1790)
1 female 10-15 (unknown daughter, born between 1785-1790)
2 males under 10 (William, born about 1795 & Tilman, born about 1797)
3 females under 10 (3 unknown daughters, born between 1790-1799)
no slaves

Additional children have been added, based on this finding.

It seems that James must have moved his family to Tennessee around 1805. He probably spent several years in Tennessee and Kentucky, and it appears that he died in one of those states, sometime after 1811. By 1811 James would have been about 52 years old. His sons William and Tilman probably made the move back to South Carolina and Georgia in the middle or late 1820's. In later census reports, the birthplace of James' son William is shown as Tennessee, which indicates that the James Gooch family lived there in the 1790's. There is no record of family members living in South Carolina in the 1820 census. It is probable that they were living somewhere in Tennessee in 1820, possibly in the north central region of that state, as there seems to be links to Robertson and Dickson counties.

11/18/96 New Information from T. Vance Little indicates that James shows up in the 1810 census for Warren County, KY., with seven children, unnamed.

08/23/97 new information received from J. Cecil Daniels, publisher of the Gooch Newsletter.

"This is my wife's line and I have quite a bit, some my own research and some of others. The best record I have on James is as follows:

Drury P., Telpha, Female, Female, Female, Wm., Male ,Tillman, Female.
Tillman is my line. My comments you mentioned were not too well
founded. A researcher talked to me about this and I agree James could have
had a William."

Family record updated to show nine children, not all in the birth order shown above.

General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Kelly

Elizabeth (Kelly) Gooch was living with one or the other of her sons in
the early 1830's, supposedly as a widow.

It is believed that she moved with her son, Tillman, to Rabun County, Georgia, around 1832. It is believed that he lived there for several years, before moving on to Mississippi. She may have died in Rabun County, Georgia.
