INTRODUCTION TO THE GOOCH FAMILIES

A study of the history of the Gooch families in America from the 1600's up to the present day is a study of American History.  Not many of us can trace our lineage back to the earliest Gooch's to arrive in the American Colonies before 1650. But we do know that men with the Gooch surname (or variable spellings of it) were among the earliest settlers in Colonial America - in New England, Virginia and Georgia. Men from the Gooch family lines roamed the wilderness with Daniel Boone, fought the British under General George Washington and explored the west with Lewis and Clark. Brothers fought against brothers during the Civil War. They were farmers, blacksmiths, doctors, lawyers, lawmen - and there were even a few outlaws. They helped make America what it is today.

Jesse Gooch, my grandfather - a photograph taken about 1915.

When I started my research in 1995, I knew very little about my Gooch family history. My grandfather was a man of mystery. Apparently something happened in his life around 1910 that caused Jesse Gooch to isolate himself from others in his family. He was a blacksmith by trade and was known as a hard man. He was subject to drinking binges. As a father, he was very strict, sometimes even overbearing,  and my mother seemed to have a "love - hate" relationship with him. He raised my mother in the little town of Mullin, Mills County, Texas, and she never knew her real mother. It appears that her mother's name was Bessie Fannin and she married Jesse Gooch in 1901 in Paris, Lamar County, Texas.

When I started my research, all I had to go on was what I could remember about the stories my mother told many years before. Jesse Gooch died in 1935, eleven years before I was born. My mother passed away in 1976. I started by contacting others in the Gooch family - many of them descendants of William Martin Gooch (born 1824, died 1919). I have   determined that Jesse Gooch was a son of William Elijah and Sarah Elizabeth Jane (Davis) Gooch, and a grandson of William Martin and Elizabeth Jane (Oliver) Gooch. I believe the family line goes back to William W. Gooch (born between 1720 and 1730, died 1802) but that is not proven.

There is still some mystery about my grandfather's life between 1874 and 1915 and my research continues.

I only have the one photograph of him, shown above. I made these sketches to show how I believe he looked as he aged. He died in January of 1935 - 11 years before I was born.

Jesse Gooch 1928

He stood about 5' 11" tall and weighed about 185 pounds. He had a sturdy, muscular build and was known for his physical strength. He had few close friends. He was a serious man who stayed to himself. Some thought he was aloof and unfriendly. He was a binge drinker but did not let it interfere with his work.

GOOCH FAMILY REGISTRY NOTES

Send me an e-mail to be added to the registry.

Dalton R. Phillips  [email protected]

When I started my research back in 1995, I first contacted Bert D. "Pete" Gooch in Abilene, Texas. He was a descendant of William Martin Gooch. He passed my information on to others in his family and I was given information about their family line that helped me solve some of the mysteries about my grandfather's family history. I remembered that my mother had visited with his father and mother, George and Hattie Gooch, several times back in the early 1950's.

I have located your Gooch Family history which takes my line of the family back to Peter Gooch who was born in St. Margaret, Ilketshall, England about 1495. This is so exciting! James Madison Gooch was my ggggrandfather. His son Lafayette Gooch was my grandmother's (Rosa Gooch) father. I am new at this and am so excited and impressed by your information. You certainly have brought this family alive. Researching this must have been exciting as well as frustrating. If you have any up to date information that is not on your web site, I would appreciate your sharing it with me. Again, thank you for all the time and effort that you have put into your research of this family. If I can ever be of assistance, please let me know.

My grandfather is Charles Marcum Gooch. I have info on his decendants. You may already be talking with my neice, Shana Batten. If not, give me a ring. I have a lot of info on where we are. I know this is the right guy because he died when my dad was around 10 or 12 and my dad was born in Paris,TX in 1925. I look forward to working with you.

I am somewhat a neophyte in the genealogy line, but have started out with the Gooch Family. I do have enough information to know that I am descended on my Mother's side from Rowland Gooch and Unity West. I would be interested in learning more about the Gooch line.

I have stumbled upon a letter written by Mrs. Rebecca Mackay (Smith) dated 11-July-1860. The four page letter discusses her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren, as of July 1860. You have John M Gooch married to Sarah Louisa Smith, born about 1815. Sarah Louisa Smith was the 3rd child of Mrs. Rebecca Mackay Smith. Sarah Louisa Smith was born 13-July-1815, married to J M Gooch on 22-December-1835.

Sarah and John's children:

1) Julia Ann Gooch has the correct birthdate

2) Mary Jane Gooch was born 26-March-1838

3) Thomas Jefferson Gooch has the correct birthdate

4) William Daniel Gooch has the correct birthdate

5) James Elijah Gooch is different in this letter --- it says 3-January-1845.... you have 22-January-1845.

6) Leah Rebecca was born 28-August-1850, and Leah died 18-July-1858 according to the letter..... you have born "about 1850" and died in 1859.

7) Joseph Franklin Gooch was born 29-July-1856.

I don't know anything else about the family after July 1860, but I can track back Sarah Louisa Smith's parents ( Elisha Smith & Rebecca Mackay ), Sarah's maternal Grandparents ( William Lewis Mackay & Elizabeth Ashbrook ), and William Lewis Mackay's parents ( Alexander Mackey, Jr and Susannah Lewis ).

The Mackay's were notorious for shifting their name... McKay, Mackay, McKey, Mackey were all variations they used back through time and in the various branches of the family. Alexander Mackey, Sr. was reportedly the immigrant from Scotland to Virginia that brought the Mackey line to the United States.

Susannah Lewis's father was David Lewis ( born in New Kent County and baptized in St Peters Parish in May 1695 ), and he died in Albemarle County, Virginia, sometime around August 1779 since his executors presented his will for processing at September Court 1779 in Albemarle County.  Susannah's mother was Anne Terrell … many people add "Betty" to her  name, although as yet I can't find any reliable source to substantiate that.  Nobody knows when Anne Terrell was born, although the best guess is + or - 5 years from David's baptism which would make her born between 1690 - 1700.  Best guess is that she was born in New Kent County, Virginia.  Anne Terrell died in January 1734 and left 8 children under the age of 17.  All 8 survived.

There was a book written by a man named William Terrell Lewis, published in March 1893, that has information concerning the generations of David Lewis & Anne Terrell, Alexander Mackey Jr & Susannah Lewis, William Lewis Mackay & Elizabeth Ashbrook, and Elisha Smith & Rebecca Mackay.

That may be too far out on the tree to be of interest to you, or perhaps you already know of it.

The letter I mentioned was obtained by William Terrell Lewis and used to help write his book.

I found your record of Jean Joseph Giers marriage to Mary L. Gooch on the WorldConnect site. I was searching for Joseph J. Giers and your site turned up. My interest in Joseph J. (or Jean Joseph) Giers comes from my attempts to trace the second marriage of Lee Crandall (whose first marriage was to Sophia Augusta Clarke, the daughter of a Chapman relative of mine). Sophia died in May of 1861 in Alexandria, LA a few months after giving birth to their daughter, Frances Augusta Crandall. Almost immediately, Lee Crandall entered the Confederate Army and served throughout the war, being wounded and taken prisoner. On 3 March 1868 in Morgan County, Alabama he married Mary Harriet Giers who was born on 29 August 1852. In the 1870 Alabama census Lee and Mary Crandall are recorded as living with Joseph J. Giers and his wife, Mary L., who I assume may have been Mary's parents. The similarity of Jean Joseph and Joseph J., and of Mary Lucinda and Mary L. is striking. Do you have any other information on the Giers family that might confirm or refute this connection?

Found your name and Jesse Gooch at the Migrations site. Martha Gooch is connected to John Charles Juzan, my ancestor. Is Martha Gooch familiar to you? She was born in MS, I believe. Thanks.

I found in 1896 Confederate Veteran magazine information on the death of his father written by his son WIlliam Gooch of Perry, La. James E. Gooch died 10 march, `1896. James was in Civil War joined at age 18 on 15 Jan., 1864 29th Mississippi Voluntary Infantry, Walthall's Brigrade Co"A". Once all his comrades were captured or killed but he and his commander escaped. He was ensign at the close of the war. His flag had a hundred and twenty-nine holes in it. This is not one of my lines but think this is your James Elijah Gooch from what I saw on world connect. This information was from Confederate Veteran magazine of April, 1896.

I am researching the GOOCH family. I saw your wonderful family tree on Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com. My wife's g-grandfather, George Freeman Klever (second marriage) married Jessie Mae Gooch about1900 (I don't have the exact date). Jessie Mae's parents were Henry W. Gooch and Laura (Gooch) ? (both from your Trees). Jessie Mae was born, Feb.29, 1880, died July 15, 1955 (Santa Ana, CA). Henry W. Gooch's parents were Nathan R. Gooch and Millie A. **UNKNOWN. Do you have information extending earlier than Nathan R. Gooch? If so, I would be interested in obtaining it for the continuation of my tree. I would be happy to send you the deed to the plot where Jessie Mae is buried in Santa Ana California.
Robert Kent Gooch III  [email protected]
Let me introduce myself, Robert Kent Gooch III.  My gr,gr,gr,gr,gr,grandfather was Rowland Gooch of Louisa. My families came together with the other Gooch in Louisa with the marrage of Stapleton Dabney Gooch to Mary Evelena Toler Gooch in 1854. Mary's gr,grandfather was Stephen Gooch of Louisa. That's where it all stops for me right now. Whether or not Rowland and Stephen were related or not is the question and how they got to Louisa. Some of the hearsay I've picked up on through families talk is that the Rowland side is from the Abemarle area and Stephen's side from the lower Va area (meaning York Cty). Really enjoyed your website and would love to share and exchange anything about our heritage.
ELIZABETH MORRIS  [email protected]
Wrote you several months ago and you were changing your computer over. I am a descendant of Thomas Gooch of McNairy County Tennessee. My great grandfather was Thomas Monroe Gooch son of Sarah Catherine Brown and John Thomas Gooch. He moved from McNairy Co., Tn to Jackson Tn., Madison Co. around 1920 and this is where he lived till his death.

My name is Elizabeth A Morris, but everyone calls me Susie. My grandmother was Eva Atkins Gooch daughter of Thomas Monroe Gooch and Julia K. Hankins/Hawkins. My grandmother said her mothers maiden name was Hankins and it's on her death certificate, but most everyone thinks it's Hawkins. The 1850 Census for McNairy Co Tn Dist 4 could be either H H Hankins/Hawkins. The Elizabeth listed on that is my gg granddad's first wife my gg grandmother was Elizabeth McNatt on 1850 Census Dist 1 she was 19 at the time.

My email is [email protected]

I have my grandfathers death date and would be glad to send you what I have if you'd like it. Thanks again for having a Gooch site. There is a Gooch Web site that several cousins are on for McNairy County Tn and other relatives.

Thanks Again,

Susie Morris

Jeff Gunz  [email protected]
From the Ann (Nancy) Gooch web site, I found the name of Thomas Hart Benton's(senator) father Jesse, and Jesse's father Samuel Benton. Though I am not named Benton, I am one nonetheless (several recent generations produced girls).

I looked up a Zebulon Howell Benton(b. 1811), son of Abner Benton(b. 1786), son of Bethel Benton (b. 1750, New Haven CT), son of James Benton (b. 1720, New Haven), son of James Benton, presumably Jr..(b. 1695, New Haven), son of James Edward Benton, presumably Sr. (b. 1665, New Haven), son of Andrew Benton, b. c1634 Epping, Essex ENG, or Guilford County???, son of Edward Benton, b. 1600 (Epping, ENG), etc.

In this lineage Bethel is a gggg grandfather; Oliver B,(ggg grandfather and Abner were brothers. Zebulon married Caroline Delafolie(the daughter of Joseph Bonaparte and Annette Savage). Abner married Hanna Cooper, who Ithink was a sister of James Fenimore cooper, and uncle

Zeb is purported to be a "cousin" of Thomas Hart Benton. They even named their youngest son Thomas Hart.

The term cousin can mean just about anything. Would you have any idea how these two are connected? I haven't, at least on the internet, been able to find a common link, although the literature I've found so far suggests there is.

One source indicates that John C Fremont (son-in-law of Thomas Hart Benton, father of Jesse Benton Fremont) was about to enlist the services of Zebulon prior to Fremont's being relieved by Lincoln in Missouri. Zeb was kind of a wheeler-dealer mine speculator and might not have beenworth too much in the Civil War(come to think of it, I might not have been too effective either).

Any information would be appreciated.

Nancy G. Buckingham  [email protected]
I'm Nancy Gooch Buckingham and have been viewing your Home Page of Phillips & Callahan Family Lines.... on Ancestry.Com. My Gooch line is from KY although I now live in VA. My Gooch line is: Francis Marion Gooch, Ransom Marion Gooch, Thomas D. Gooch, Thomas Gooch, Liner Gooch, Rowland Gooch, Claiborne Gooch, William Gooch III, Rev. John Gooch, Sir William Gooch, William Gooch, Sir Thomas Gooch.......

A cousin of my father's in Somerset, KY traced the Gooch line for us quite some years ago. The Rowland Gooch listed above was married to Unity West, and her direct line goes back to King Alfred the Great. The Gooches were quite prominent in Colonial Williamsburg, VA.

Where do you think you might fit into this line? I'd be happy to share some information that I have with you if I knew just what you're interested in. Since most of my information was prepared by the cousin some years ago, I cannot guarantee its correctness, but I feel she was very thorough in her research.

My Gooch line is pretty well set, but I'm having trouble gatheringinformation for the other side of my family--Hackler and Simpson. But it's fun searching.

Lysonda Cook  [email protected]
My name is Lysonda Cook (Gooch). My father's name was Jimmie W. Storie, actually Gooch, died July 22, 2000, 53-years-old. His father's name was Leonard Gooch and his mother's name was Myrtle Gooch (Sperry). They had around seven kids (names are probably not in right birth order) Shirley, Lana, Leonard, Gayle, Jimmie, and Gene (Gene was one of a twin, the other twin died at birth). They lived in the Joplin, MO area. Myrtle Gooch died after complications from giving birth. After she passed away the kids were all separated, I know that Gayle and my father, Jimmie, were raised in Joplin, Mo, by the Harold Storie family, and were adopted and given the last name Storie, although it turns out they weren't actually legally adopted. So, if anyone has any information on the Goochs from Missouri or the surrounding area, I'd love to hear from you.
Lucy Guest Ham  [email protected]

My name is Lucy Guest Ham, and I am the granddaughter of John Thomas Gooch and Sarah Ann Elizabeth Rutherford. My great-grandfather was William Gooch and he was married to Sarah McNatt.

I am very interested in obtaining any information on the Gooch family that you might have. Please add me to your address list.

Carolyn Gregory  [email protected]
I found your e-mail address at ancestry.com. I'm looking for information on Chaney Briggs Miller (1848-1937) & Margana A. Gooch (1849-1924). Both are buried in Idabel, OK. in McCurtain County.

Their children were: Mollie Elizabeth, George, Chaney Briggs, Amanda or Callie Syreny Caroline, Robert or Booker, James Madison, Willie Washington, Icie D., and Pinkney Luther. I got this information on the LDS site.

Chaney Briggs Miller was a brother to my great grandfather William Y. Miller who died in McNairy County, TN. William Y. Miller is found in the 1870 census for the first time in McNairy County, TN. I am assuming that he came after the civil war or perhaps fought in the civil war in the McNairy County/Shiloh area. Both were born in SC and I have searched endlessly for info. on their parents....no luck yet....perhaps you can help. Or do you know where in SC that Chaney Briggs Miller was born. I have been told that they came from the low country. On my great grandfather's death certificate (William Y. Miller) it lists his father as W. Miller b. SC., mother is unknown. Family lore says that William Y. and Chaney Briggs' father came to McNairy County, TN only once and that he brought apples. Afraid that's not much of a clue.

I have been told that they also had a brother who was killed in the civil war....perhaps at Shiloh which is nearby.

Any help greatly appreciated.

My great-grandfather, George Washington Gooch, is buried in Locklin Cemetery, Milam Co. TX. Until a month ago all I knew was he was from Alabama and had a brother named James and a sister named Hattie who was married to Harper Copeland. A finding on the internet gave me a list of all his siblings and his parents-most all of them remained in Lauderdale Co. AL. They knew of his marriage to Cornelia Paralee Penny and his death in 1908. Someone must have kept a family Bible. I have been working all the census records since 1786for NC and expect to find a connection to the William Gooch of Caswell County. The census records very well show which family occupied Granville County and that the William Gooch family remained in the Caswell/Orange/Wake area-in the Hillsborough District. Have layover maps to show that not much changed over time. George Washington Gooch's grandfather was born about 1805 (45 in 1850 census of Wake Co.). His father was born 1838 in Wake County. I am interested to see the notation on your site that it is now believed that the William Gooch who married Mary Fanning is a generation younger than previously thought. In the 1840 census of Wake Co. the three Gooch households are those of Willie Gooch (my ancestor), his brother, Rowland (who was 5 years younger than Willie; and Polly. Polly is the diminutive for Mary; so I hope this is Mary Fanning. She is shown with 1 male (10-15), (1) male 15-20; (1) fem 10-15); (1) fem 15-20; (2) fems 20-30; (1) fem 60-70 and (17) slaves. This was a woman of a substantial inheritance and undoubtedly the female 60-70 as the younger boys and young women would not have had such property. Her age is very appropriate for the marriage date 5 Dec 1798 to William Gooch in Caswell Co. Willie and Rowland would make 8 children in Wake County; and it is possible a couple of daughters were married and in the census in another name. Willie would have been 35 and Rowland 30 in the 1840 census. My Willie died sometime between 1853 and 1860 as his widow moved to Lauderdale Co. AL and the youngest child in 1860 had been born in NC. The widow, Isabella Riley, had a brother in Lauderdale in 1850 census. Willie could have moved to Lauderdale after 1850 as well; but I find no record of his taking land there. The Riley family was large and occupied Orange and Wake County, NC through several censuses. I think the item most others might be interested in pursuing is whether Polly Gooch, who was born between 1770 and 1780 is Mary Fanning. The 1810 Caswell Co. Gooches are all sons of the William who died in Caswell in 1832: Francis, John, Nathanl. Wille Jur; and William Ser. Since the William of the 1803 will was deceased William Jr. would be Sr. by 1810. If anyone has estate settlements in Caswell/Orange/Wake Counties that are pertinent, please share. Pat.

One of my brick walls in my genealogy search is Neal Fulton, born about 1800 in Virginia. He married Lucy Harris in January, 1821 in Saline County, MO. After 1850, Neal is no longer living, and the family relocated to Linn County, MO. During all my searches through census records in Linn County, I came across Gooches and Gooches and more Gooches.

In my search for Neal's ancestry (I am pretty sure his father's name is John and possibly spent time in Tennessee), I came across a John Fulton, age 79, born in Virginia, in the 1850 Rutherford County, TN census records. He is living in the household of John C Gooch. Also living with the family is Mary A. Fulton, age 13, which I would guess is a granddaughter.

Do you have any information on the John Fulton. What is the connection between the Gooch family and the Fulton family.

Obviously, any information you might have, or even guesses, would be greatly appreciated.

My g-g-grandparents were Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Gooch (of Virginia?) and Joseph Herod "Herod" Stanley, Sr of Orange County, North Carolina.  Betsy was the daughter of Pomfret & Rebecca Williams Gooch and the granddaughter of Rowland and Lively Thweatt Gooch.   I would like to be added to your registry, please, and thank you for the tremendous amount of work you've done for the family.  By the way, I live in Bossier City, Louisiana - in the NW corner of our state.

MY GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS JOHN GOOCH.  I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND OUT MUCH ABOUT HIM BUT HIS FATHER WAS WILLIAM GOOCH AND THEY COME INTO THE UNITED STATES THROUGH VIRGINIA.  JOHN TRAVELED BACK AND FORTH FROM THE WEST TRAINING HORSES FOR THE ARMY AND SETTLED IN LEWIS COUNTY KENTUCKY AND THIS IS WHERE HE PASSED AWAY AND IS BURIED.  HE MARRIED MAGGIE CREMEANS.  WOULD THIS BE THE SAME JOHN GOOCH THAT YOU ARE A DESCENDENT OF??

This seems to be a purely US site, but as far as I am aware, the Gooch's were a family who came to England from Holland with William of Orange in 1686 or thereabouts. They were a farming family and settled in East Anglia, where many Gooch's remain. My own ancestors were definitely in London around 1850, but I am trying to find out about the line before then. My family lives in Sheffield (of Full Monty fame). My Father is Kenneth Leslie Gooch (born Retford, Nottinghamshire, 1943), son of Frederick Percival Gooch (born in Market Harborough, Leicestershire 1908), son of Frederick Charles Gooch, whose father was Charles Gooch I think, after that things do go cold, but I know that Charles Gooch was married in a church in Kentish Town in London in the 1850s. I am interested to know if my line might be related to Sir Thomas Gooch who was a prominent Victorian engineer, who lived in Windsor, and was a friend to Isambard Kingdom-Brunel. Can anyone help? ... Dr Caroline Gooch, Putney, London, UK

***Realized after I sent my first message that in fact the Victorian engineer was Sir Daniel Gooch, not Sir Thomas as I said. Sir Daniel did have a son called Charles, but I don't know if this was the same Charles Gooch that was my great great grandfather.

Very interested in your website regarding Gooch heritage. I am the  grandson of Jennings Bryan Gooch. My name is Chris Gooch and I live in Hazard, Kentucky, born in Letcher County 10/7/63. son of Kenneth Bryan Gooch, born in Letcher County, 7/26/35.  Very curious as to the source of information that papaw was adopted as this would be the first news of this from our family. Also, before papaw passed away he listed his brothers and sisters and missing from your listing is a sister born in 1907 named Verda. Also, an infant stillborn (other than Bertha), and a sister named Fanny who passed away when she was 11 or twelve years old.  I am very interested in my ancestry and appreciate all the work you have done with your website.

I am a descendant of Cynthia Gooch (b. 1811 in KY)  who was the daughter of Gideon and Nancy (Leavell) Gooch.  She married Orville Scott Clark (who is the big mystery to me) in 1830.  They moved very soon to Grundy Co, MO as all of their 13 children were born there.  In 1865, they (or at least most of them) came to California and Oregon.  I would love to hear from other descendants of Cynthia or anyone else with whom I could share information.

Stephanie in Virginia  [email protected] Surnames: Gooch - Gartner - Baumgartner - Reynolds - Gartner
Greetings to all seekers and informers of the Gooch line.  My name is Stephanie B. Gartner and I am working in tandem with my mother Thelma Jean Iris Reynolds Baumgartner.  She is the last daughter/child of Ophelia Gooch Reynolds of Pulaski County, Kentucky.  Opehlia's father was Fountain Gooch, son of Robert Dalton Gooch, son of Dabney Gooch, son of Liner Gooch, son of Rowland Gooch, etc. We have just begun our studies as we live now very near Louisa County, Virginia. We have had our hands on many interesting deeds, wills, maps and grave markers in the basement of the county court house.  We are very new to the process and we are grateful to all who continue to bring pieces of the Gooch family and early American life to us.  We hope we can offer some of our knowledge in time.  You have given us a tremendous jump start.
