John Irvin January |
JOHN IRVIN JANUARY, seventh child
of Peter and Deborah McMahon January, was born August 29, 1767 in Big Cove,
Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He moved while a teen with his family
to Woodford Co. Kentucky. He served in the American Revolutionary war, along with his
father and three brothers. He married SUAAN MCFARLND on January 17, 1789 in Woodford
Co. Kentucky. John bought land from William McConnell of Feb. 8, 1792 in Woodford Co.
Kentucky.
The family left Maysville, Kentucky in 1819 for
Missouri. They settled in Louisiana, Pike Co., Missouri. There is evidence of owning land
across the river in Pike Co., Illinois. Not too much is known of his life in Louisiana
except that he died on December 22, 1827 without a will and it took eleven years to settle
his estate. There were five slaves with the estate. His son-in-law, Robert Foster was the
first administrator, but was later replaced by William Campbell. Finally, in 1837
upon the orders of the Sheriff, all of his personal property was sold to the highest
bidder.
Prior to leaving for Missouri, John was elected
first elder of the Maysville Presbyterian Church on January 13, 1819.
Susan died on September 29, 1826. On July
16, 1827, John married Sara Black of Pulaski Co., Kentucky.

5. SAMUEL ALONZA JANUARY, fifth child of John and Susan McFarland
January, was born ca 1799 in Woodford County, Kentucky. He married PAMELIA JANUARY
January 15, 1814 in Mason County, Kentucky. Born January 15, 1797 in Maysville,
Mason County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of SAMUEL and ELIZABETH MARSHALL JANUARY.
Samuel Alonzo January, son of John Irvin January, married his first cousin,
Pamelia, daughter of Samuel January, when he was 15 and she was 17. They were married on
January 15, 1814. There is some evidence that Samuel was in the War of 1812, but at this
time he would have only been 13 years old. Stranger things have happened.
What we know for sure is that shortly after
their marriage they left Maysville, Kentucky and moved to Pike Co., Illinois. His children
were born there from the years 1820-1838. They are listed in the 1830 Pike Co. census.
There are deeds for numerous lots for Samuel and Pamelia across the river in
downtown Louisiana, Missouri. Evidently, they came to this part of the country with his
father and his family. They bought 40 acres of land in Pike Co., Illinois on May 3, 1836.
Samuel and Pamelia stayed in Pike Co. until
John's Estate was finally settled in 1838, then they left for Texas, settling in Harrison
Co.(now Panola Co.). The 1850 census in Panola Co. lists his children as having been
born in
Florida, but this is incorrect. This census also shows a child, E. K. Booker living with
them. She was born in Texas in 1847. Samuel is listed as a farmer.
Judges of the Republic of Texas - 1836/1846 by
Joe E. Ericson, states that from 1843 to 1846 Samuel was a Justice of the Peace in
Harrison, Co., Texas. Since records for 1840 for Harrison Co. have been destroyed, not too
much is known about these daring souls, leaving a comfortable home in Kentucky and
traveling
west when it was dangerous territory.
Deeds are on record in Maysville, Mason Co.,
Kentucky, where they sold property on December 31, 18l6, and on April 8, 1822.
We believe that at least Pamelia is buried in
Bethel Cemetery in Panola Co., Texas. She died prior to 1860, as did Samuel.

a. GEORGE G. JANUARY, child of Samuel and Pamelia January January, was
born about 1825 either in Mason Co., Kentucky or in Pike Co., Illinois. At this writing
this has not been documented. He married ELIZABETH A. MILLS ca 1845 in Panola
County, Texas. She was born ca 1832 in Mississippi.
George came to Harrison Co. (now Panola Co.),
Texas with his father and mother around 1838. The family settled around the
Fairplay/Deadwood area of Panola County. Around 1845, George married Elizabeth
"Lizzie" Mills, who was from Mississippi.
George was a newspaperman in the Carthage area.
Around 1862, he was shot and killed. Several stories have been told about this but none
have been documented as yet because records for the time in Panola County have been
destroyed. The stories go like this:
He was shot because someone did not like what
he wrote in the newspaper. He was shot because someone said something about
his wife and he went after him and came out on the losing end. He was shot
down in the door of his house in front of his family by a recruiter for the Confederacy
because he would not join the Confederate Army. This is the one I like.....
At any rate, Lizzie packed up her children and
moved to the Shelbyville area in Shelby Co.to keep her sons from taking revenge.
Elizabeth's death date is unknown, but we know
it is after April 1883 because we have a copy of a letter she wrote her uncle. At the time
of the letter she was living three miles of the Town of Center, Texas in Shelby Co. She
stated in the letter that she was the daughter of N. T. Mills and that she had only one
brother living, Martin Mills age 73.
We believe that George is buried in Bethel
Cemetery in Panola Co., and that Elizabeth is either buried at Bethel or at Sand Hills
Cemetery in Shelby Co.

|
Nehemar and Sarah lived their complete lives in the Mt. Pleasant Community of Shelby Co.
on the land that Sarah had inherited from her father. There they raised seven children.
Six boys and one girl.
Thomas, "Pa", was the boss. His word
was the law! In the last years of his life, his health was not good and comfort was very
important to him. He had a folding cot in the "dog trot" to catch the summer
breezes, and a porch swing swinging from the old pear tree in the back yard. It was
clearly understood that these, as well as his rocker by the fireplace, belonged to Pa.
But, rest assured, that anytime they were empty, the youngsters in the family delighted in
"getting Pa's place".
Elizabeth, "Ma" or "Aunt
Betty", was everybody's favorite. She was one of the very rare people who never said
an unkind work about another person. We all remember her and her flowers. At watering
time, she would draw a bucket of water from the old well on the west end of the porch,
pour the water into a bucket that had a dipper in it, and walk (usually barefooted) to the
east end of the porch were her bank of pot plants sat waiting for her. She had some
beauties, and was always anxious to get a cutting of something new. Gardening and fishing
were her passions.
Lots of company came to visit Ma and Pa, and
they were always welcomed and fed the best in the house. Then everyone settled down for a
lively visit.
Pa and Ma were farmers. They were members of
the Church of Christ at Mt. Pleasant and are buried in the churchyard cemetery there.
Sarah Morris January died January 9,
1956. Nehemar died March 1, 1938. Both are buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Shelby
County, Texas.

CONDY BUFORD JANUARY |
Condy and Maude Ellington January |
4b CONDY BUFORD JANUARY, fourth child of Nehemar and Sarah Morris
January, was born April 15, 1893 in Shelby County, Texas. He married MAUDE EVA
ELLINGTON July 10, 1919 in Mt. Pleasant Community, Shelby County, Texas. Born
October 15, 1985 in Shelby County, Texas, she was the daughter of JOSEPH and MARY MCKINZIE
ELLINGTON. They had three children. Doyle, the
first-born, died with diphtheria when only 2 1/2 years of age.
C. B. was a dandy and a dude....He rode
the finest horse in the community and took prizes in all the contests. He attended
Moler Barber College in Dallas in 1914 and worked at this trade until the mid
1930's.
He served in World War I in France, and assured
us he was in the thick of the big battles. He was wounded, and was in the hospital in
Bordeaux, France when the war was over. His coming home ship was the USS Great Northern,
and he had many tales to tell about this voyage.
After barbering for several years, C. B.
decided to run for County Commissioner in 1932. He was defeated by a small margin by Bob
Irish. During his campaign from door to door, he noted an intersection about 5 miles out
on the lower Arcadia road that he thought would be a good place for a general
merchandise store. This was in the days before paved roads, and the mud did get deep in
the nearby communities of Lamar, Mt. Zion, Snow Hill, and Arcadia, making it hard to get
to Center. He built his red and white candy striped two story General Merchandise Store on
land leased from Byron Bush, and named it "Pine Ridge".
The business was very successful due to C.B.'s
planning and Maude's hard work. Soon they added additional feed and fertilizer
houses and started grocery routes into the adjoining communities - delivering groceries
and feed and buying chickens and eggs. Twice a week the chickens and eggs were taken to
market at Shuster's in Shreveport, Louisiana.
The store became a social center of the
community. In the winter, people sat on kegs around the wood heater and told tales, or
played dominoes. In the summer, it was the gathering place for the community baseball
games
Maude's finest hour came during World War II
when she was appointed plane spotter by Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport. Her code
name was "Daisy 3lB". It was not unusual for her to pick up the telephone, she
had a party line of 7, and find neighbors making small talk. She would unhesitatingly
interrupt them with, "Get off the line, this is an Army Flash!" Then she would
call Barksdale and report her findings. When the war was over, a General from Barksdale
came to the store to pin her wings on her. He did this with her standing between the gas
pumps on the front porch of the Candy Striped Store. Just as C.B. served his tour of duty
for his country in France in WWI, Maude served hers at "Pine Ridge" during WWII.
C. B. died on February 3, 1974 and Maude
died on March 3, 1977. Both are buried in the Oaklawn Cemetery in Center, Shelby Co.,
Texas.
