Transcripts of Old Family Letters

These transcriptions were found among the Brainard Reunion papers that my grandmother had obtained years ago from Wallace Brainard. They appear to be photocopies of his transcriptions of letters from the Brainards to their kin in Ashtabula County, Ohio. I have copied them here. There are likely to be mistakes in my transcription of Wallace's writing and in Wallace's transcription of the originals, but the content is so interesting that feel compelled to share them. You can find all these people in my personal genealogical database.

Letter from Rhoda Brainard Nelson to her sister in the 1850s or 1860s
The letter was sent from Clinton Co., Iowa where Rhoda and her husband and two of her children moved for a short time in the late 1850s or early 1860s. The recipient is probably Rhoda's sister Phanella. Her husband is William Nelson and the children she had with her were Lucinda and Walter. She had to leave daughter Lorinda behind because of her health. Rhoda and her family moved back to Ashtabula County, Ohio in the early 1860s.

Letter from John F Brainard to his sister in 1862
This was written while John was serving in the Civil War. He enlisted in the 15th Light Regiment of Ohio on December 10, 1861. He mustered in on February 1, 1862 and mustered out December 12, 1862. He wrote this letter to his sister, probably Phanella, in November of 1862 from Tennessee. He mentions Ruth, his wife, and Gerty, his daughter.

Letters from David Brainard, Jr. to his sister and parents in 1861 and 1862
David Brainard received a pension for service in a 63rd Pennsylvania Infantry, Company K. He wrote three letters between December of 1861 and April 1862 to his sister and parents, probably Phanella. His letters are interesting because you can see the transition from enthusiasm to despair over the first winter of the War. In one letter he mentions a letter from his brother Conant Brainard. Conant was serving with the 29th Ohio Infantry and died of illness April 15, 1862, a week after the last of David's letters transcribed here.

Letter from Conant Eden Brainard to his brother and sister in 1861 or 1862
Conant Eden Brainard, brother of David and John above, served with the 29th Ohio Infantry, Company B. He wrote this letter sometime in late 1861 or early 1862 to his sister and brother. Conant died of illness at a military hospital at Martinsburg, Virginia on April 15, 1862. Some portions of this copy of the letter were unreadable.

Letters from Henry F Brainard to his aunt in 1862 and 1863
Henry F Brainard served with the 29th Ohio Infantry, Company B. Here are two letters he wrote to his aunt, probably Phanella. Henry was the son of Reuben Brainard, a brother of David, Conant and John above. He mentions William Nelson, his brother in law, and Abner Brainard, his uncle.
