 The Lowe family is of English descent. Joshua Lowe is believed to be the son of Caleb Lowe born in Bedford County,Virginia. Joshua was born about 1774 in Surry County, what is now Wilkes County. His first wife was Mary Teague and they had two daugters, Rosanna and Elizabeth and possibly another daughter and son. He married his second wife, Lucinda Hubbard, on June 9, 1819 (bond date),they had eleven children: Caleb Anderson, Joshua Jr., Jesse, Rebecca, Mary, Eliza Rinda, Jane C., James Martin, Serena, Betsey, and Annie. Joshua Sr.'s will is dated September 30, 1847 in Wilkes County, naming three sons, James, Caleb and Joshua. Joshua Lowe Jr., who is my direct ancestor, is said to have left Wilkes County never to be heard of again. Joshua Jr. can be traced to the western mountains of NC, where him and his wife Lucinda Smith, lived and raised their family. He married Lucinda in Wilkes County on July 13, 1843 using the name Joshua Young. Some census records have him listed as J.Y. Lowe. According to my aunt they raised a large family in the Alarka community of Swain County and took off in the middle of the night never to be seen again. It is not known where they died at this time.
