This indenture made and entered unto this the 18th February in the year of our Lord 1856 between JOEL RECTOR of the county of Madison and State of North Carolina of the one part and J.J. GUDGER and M.P. PENLAND of the other part, Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of seventy four dollars to us in hand paid b the said JOEL RECTOR the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath bargain and sold and by these presents doth bargains and sell unto the said JOEL RECTOR a certain piece of land situated lying and being n the county of Madison, it being a piece of land granted to ELIHU RECTOR for one hundred acres, joining the old RUSSELL SHOEMAKER'S tract on Baley's Branch , beginning on a beach on SHOEMAKER'S line and runs 69 degrees east, 54 poles to a white oak then north 52 degrees east 54 poles to a small hickory then south 25 degrees east one hundred poles to a black oak near the top of a mountain then south one hundred and sixteen poles to a hickory on JOEL RECTOR line then with his line north 25 degrees west nineteen poles to a small dogwood his corner then with his line south 76 degrees west forty poles to a stake then north 73 degrees west one hundred and forty poles to a stake on SHOEMAKER'S line then with his line forty poles to the beginning containing one hundred acres to have and to hold free and clear from all claims whatsoever unto him the said JOEL RECTOR together with all ways, woods, waters, mines, minerals, hered it aments and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining in testimony we have hereunto set our hands and affix our seals the day and date first above written. Signed, sealed, and delivered in the presents of us.
