ADDITIONAL NOTES: Documentation in the Historical Society Archives in Batavia NY re. the family of a Michael Metzger, born in France in 1810 and died in Batavia NY in 1880. This Michael married to Katherine also born in France. Their children were: Jacob Metzger 1856-1912, Michael Metzger 1853-1918, Charles Metzger, William Metzger, Mary Metzger, Ella Metzger. This Michael must have been married twice or there were two Michael Metzgers as we also have found a Michael Metzger, married Caroline whose son George Metzger was born in 1845 and served in the Union Army 1863-1865, enlisting at age 18 yrs. It is believed this Michael was brother of our Jacob Metzger. [Further research is required.] I believe this because family legend tells us the Metzgers came from France, and because of the repeated use of the names George, Jacob, and Michael; also because we know the family of our Jacob came thru Batavia, NY, and Jacob`s older children were born in Batavia NY. We have also found information on census records etc... that makes us feel that our Metzgers came from France [quite possibly Alsace-Lorraine].

Notes for Michael Metzger
Michael and his brother George were only two and four years old when their Father Jacob, and Mother Barbara Roussell moved to Carrick Township, Ontario from New York State 1844-45. In 1868, Michael married Ursala Reis when she was 19 years old; however she lived only a few years longer. After her death, Michael married her sister, Anastasia [Annie] Reis. During these years, Michael and his brother, along with a gang of other men, had the contract of cutting the trees and building roadways all through the district. The Metzger family walked from Carsruhe to church at St. Pauls Normanby on Sunday morning. Family legend tells us that the horses had to rest on the seventh day and that is why the family walked to church. The Funeral Notice for Michael States: Will leave his late residence, near Carlsruhe, at 1.30 oclock p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, for the Hanover Cemetery. Service at St. Mathews Lutheran Church after interment.

[Northeast of Frankfort around the Fulda area.] It is recorded that they immigrated to Batavia NY ca 1853, then to North EastHope, Twp., Perth Co., Ontario, Canada, then 1857 to Normanby Twp., near Ayton, Hanover, Ontario, [Grey Co.]
