| Who
and what were Covenanters? |
In the 17th
century conflict arose between Church and State in Scotland. Those
who remained steadfast in their Presbyterian beliefs and refused
to take an oath to the king saying that he was the head of the church
became known as Covenanters. They believed that Christ was the head
of the church and were punished for this belief. Many were forced
to pay the ultimate price for this by laying down their lives. The
Royalists and Dragoons, who were seeking their lives, chased the
Covenanters from glen to glen, especially in the Lowlands. If anyone
was found hiding them, they suffered imprisonment and/or death as
well. This punishment was not just reserved for the strong and healthy
-- children and the elderly were subjected to the cruelty as well.
The Following

| General
notes on interpreting early records |
It is sometimes
possible to make rough estimates of the ages of individuals mentioned
in records based on historical and regional customs and laws.
- A male of
age 14 or older could be a witness on documents or SwornChain
Carrier (S.C.C.) on land surveys
- A male of
age 16 or older could serve in the militia
- A male of
age 21 or older could own land.
- A female
is usually 16 or older at the time of marriage
There are some
known naming traditions. For instance, in Scottish families, you
may find the children were named after one of the grandparents:
1st son - named
for the father's father
2nd son - named for the mother's father
3rd son - named for the father himself
1st daughter - named for the mother's mother
2nd daughter - named for the father's mother
3rd daughter - named for the mother herself
There is a similar
naming convention for Irish families. An additional naming practice
for the Irish is the fourth son is often named after the father's
older brother. Similarly, the fourth daughter is named after the
wife's older sister. Interestingly, if the father remarries after
his first wife dies, the first daughter born to this new marriage
is named after the deceased wife, and includes her whole name.
