The Decendants of John Brown By W. C. Reed & Alvin Stapleton The following compilation of family history is the result of many, many years of research on the part of Alvin Stapleton, and the past five years of my own research. I wish to personally thank Alvin,Betty Music Daniel and others who have submitted information for permiting me to post this information on the internet to be used by fellow researchers. Please bear in mind that much of what follows may be speculative, unless the source of that information has been provided. (i.e. Appalacian Cross- roads, Birth-Death records etc.) If you, as you search through this work, should find information that is incorrect, or you can provide additional information to complete some family lines, please feel free to contact me at: SassyMan46@ aol.com or Mr. Alvin Stapleton at: Chislplane@aol.com. (*) Denotes direct relationship. 1. John Brown was born Abt. 1797 it is belived to be in Wise Co., Va. and died Abt. 1875 in Floyd Co., Ky. He married CATHERINE BORDERS June 25, 1817 in Floyd Co., Ky. She was born Aug. 12, 1797 in Walkers Station,Bland Co., Va and died Jan. 1903 in George's Creek, Johnson Co.,Ky. D/o JOHN V. BORDERS I and CATHERINE SELLARDS. Notes for JOHN BROWN and CATHERINE BORDERS: From:Appalacian Crossroads Chapter 12 by Clayton Cox Katy Borders Brown Catherine "Katy" Borders, daughter of John and Catherine Sellards Borders, and granddaughter of Hezekiah Sellards, was born near Walkers Station in the present Bland County, Virginia, August 12, 1797. She came to Kentucky with her parents about the year 1904, where her family settled near the present Johnson-Lawrence County line, then in Floyd County, Kentucky. Per Floyd County records she married John Brown June 25, 1817. John was born ca 1797 in Virginia and died in Kentucky ca 1875. Katy died during the last week in January of 1903 at the old Brown homestead on Georges Creek, being in her 105th year. She was the last survivor of the eight children of John and Catherine Sellards Borders. According to the Feb. 6, 1903 Big Sandy News obituary, Katy's husband, John, was a well know Baptist minister. His home was, for almost a century, a noted stopping place for travelers as the river road up Big Sandy then passed by his place. On August 30, 1903, the memorial funeral service for Katy was at the old Brown homestead on the same spot of ground she and John settled in the early part of the 19th century. My mother had the privilege of seeing this aged lady, and for many years our family had a tintype, now lost, similar to the photo which appeared in Jack Arrowood's column "Arrowpoints" in the Nov 4, 1953 issue of the Paintsville Herald. Having viewed the old tintype many times as a youth, when the microfilm rolled over this page the picture literally jumped out of the page - it was so familiar. At this writing the names of the parents of John Brown are still unknown. It would appear from the records of the birth of their daughter, Elizabeth, they lived for a short time in the area of the present Wise County, Virginia, which could be a possibility of the area of his parentage. Wise County, as such, did not exist when Elizabeth was born, as this county was not formed until the late 1850's, thus the reference to Wise County has to be a later reference to the area of her birth. On a torn piece of yellow paper, similar to the old railroad bond, with faded brown ink, we find the following permission slip by Katy's mother. The portion with the line marked through was so marked on the slip as written. In this longhand note, Catherine Sellards Borders did not cross the "t's". June the 20th 1817 Mr. Wilm J. Mayo Sir please give (these words are mark through) This is to certify I have given liberty to John Brown to marry my daughter Caty Borders and please to send licens to him for the same. Given under my hand. /s/ Catty Borders /s / J Sam Dvis Also recorded on page 70 of Marriage Book 1, of Floyd County I find the following listed by the minister preferring the ceremony of this couple. The bond as recorded is dated June 20th but in the body of the bond it lists the proposed wedding of John Howerton and Barbary Jones. Children of JOHN BROWN and CATHERINE BORDERS: i. S/o ZEDIKIAH ALAN CASTLE and JULIA ANN PENIX. Notes for SILBURN HENDERSON CASTLE:(Source: Appalacian Crossroads by Clayton Cox.) Apr 21, 1851, He received a land grant of 1000 acres which encompassed an area from just below the juncture of Castle Fork of Georges Creek road and the present US 23 highway, along U S 23 towards Paintsville about four tenths mile, or about to the center of the ridge of the second large hill cut on U S 23 from Castle Fork road, to and including the Castle Fork area. His son Henderson is buried on the first ridge on the right of U S 23 toward Paintsville from Castle Fork road. The old Henderson Castle residence stood where the present Oakley Castle residence stands on Castle Fork. This was a four room log house, being two rooms, one above the other on either side of a "Dog Trot" or what we call today a breezeway. The windows were heavily shuttered, being unique in this respect, in the loca area. The old cellar was a rocked area in the side of the hill to the right of the house. This has been replaced by a concrete front cellar. Henderson's barn was located in the hollow behind the house about where the present barn is located. She was born June 05, 1860 in Johnson Co.,KY and died July 27, 1938 in Pine Grove,Lawrence Co., OH. Note for NOAH CASTLE and MARY ANN SALYER: Noah and Mary left Johnson County about 1903, and settled in Boyd Co., KY., at first. Things were progressing for the family until Grandfather obtained as part of a transaction a $50 note. He went to see the party and advised him he was in no hurry for payment and that he was willing to take as payment a calf, corn or other farm produce as it might desire to offer in payment. Hostility broke out between the two families after the visit. Harassment and some small fights between individual members of the two families took place. The matter came to a climax at a picnic held at the school house with a full clash occurring. Grandfather Noah, not being a gun toter, relied on his trusty pocket knife. In the scrape that followed he cut one individual seriously. The injured's pregnant wife started screaming and clawing Noah. He in turn kicked the woman soundly enough in the seat of the pants to toss her into the stream bed near the school. Warrants and other legal action followed. And grandfather went into a period of hiding. As the result of the actions that followed they lost their farm and had to start over in Greenup County. Noah and Mary purchased a small 50 area farm off the mail branch of Brush Creek of the East Fork of little Sandy River being part of the old Pennsylvania Furnace Tract. The old farm house, now gone, used to set in a little "y" type crossroads. The road to the right of the house went back to a 20 area farm owned by their son, Clem. Later after Clem moved to Pine Grove, OH, Hodley and Aunt Catherine moved into the house. For some time they had lived with Noah. The road in front of the house went over a little low bridge then by the small barn and up to another farm in that hollow, where there was a large rockhouse adjacent to the residence.
