JOHN ANDERSON III, Esq. and SARAH CRAIG. Note for Capt. JOHN ANDERSON III Esq.: "Historical and Genealogical Miscellany", by J. Stillwell,Vol. II, page 324- John Anderson III Esq., came to East Jersey ,America in 1699, via Darian on Panama, not as an imigrant to the new world, but as a survivor of the ill-fated Scots expedition which had set out a year before to find a colony of the Isthmus of Panama and in which his own father, John Anderson of Stobcross and Dowhill, Lord Provost of Glasgow, had invested one thousand pounds. Early in June 1699, after almost half the colony of twelve hundred men had died of fever, etc., the project was abandoned and Capt. John Anderson was appointed to command the ship "Unicorn", carrying the surviving colonists, headed to Scotland. After a stormy and disastrous voyage, the ship limped into Perth Amboy,New Jersey and dropped anchor. It was in such bad condition that it sank there and it is believed still to lie at the foot of Fayette Street. A stone marker was placed there with the inscription" Beneath this stone are interred the bodies of John Anderson Esq. and Sarah, His wife. John died Aug. 10, 1787 at age 82 and Sarah died July 19, 1793 at age 90. Children of WILLIAM JOSEPH NEWTON and HELENA ANDERSON: i. SARAH 3 NEWTON,b. Mar. 2, 1752;d. 1821;m. GEORGE KENNETH BLAKE ii.
