DESCENDANTS OF JOHN L. MCKENZIE Sr. As researched by: William C. Reed and Sharon Mckenzie Edited by: W. C. Reed Editors note: The following file is as accurate as we can depict it. Most of the information for this file was gleaned from Johnson Co.,Ky Birth and Death Records, Scott Co.,Va Census and Marriage Records, the "Eastern Kentuckian" periodical submitted to Sharon by Mary Weldinger and others who have contributed their resorces either to me or to Sharon Mckenzie. While viewing this file, if you find items that need to corrected or added to, please feel to contact me at: SassyMan46@AOL.com., or Sharon Mckenzie at: SMcKenzi@Aol.com. It is my desire to have this file to be as true and accurate as humanly possible. (*) Denotes relationship to editor. While I will attempt to combine the research of Sharon McKenzie and that of my own, please bear in mind that some of the following information is speculative. Therefore one must draw their own conclusion, unless that is, you are a direct descendant of one of the following persons and have the information that can correct our research. Articles from the "East Kentuckian" dated March 1987, were submitted by: Charles B. Coke. Mr. Coke indicates that most of his material was submitted to him by Mr. Don Lemaster.(Note: Both are now deceased). Articles form the September 1987 "East Kentuckian" were contributed to Clayton Cox,Editor, along with a copy of a letter by the late John Fred Williams of Ashland, Ky.,that applies to parts 1 and 2 of this file. It is worthy to note here also that the editor of the "East Kentuckian", Mr. Clayton Cox, who also wrote "Appalacian Crossroads", is deceased as well. Generation No. 1 1. JOHN McKENZIE,b. Abt.1775 in Scott Co.,Va;d. unknown; m. MARTHA PATSY COCKE/COX Abt. 1800;d/o DAVID COCKE/COX and JEMIMA LEACH. She was born between 1777-1784 in Scott Co.,Va. d. Between 1840-1850 Notes for John McKenzie: Duane McKenzie, descendant from Lafayette McKenzie b. 4/3/1836 or 1837, shows Johns father may be Hugo McKenzie and the mother's name Bridget? (Source: Sharon McKenzie) From the "East Kentuckian." March 1987: "Excerpt from material submitted by: Charles B. Coke, 18327 Sharon Road, Triangle, VA 22172. Mr. Coke indicates in his material that most of the data on this family was submitted to him by Mr. Don Lemaster, Portsmouth, Ohio. (Both of these men are now (year 2000) deceased. ) JOHN McKENZIE, b 1780-85 (based on 1820 & 1830 censuses), d in 1837 or after, m ca 1800, MARTHA "PATSY" COCKE/COX, b 1777-84,;d. ca 1840-50, d/o DAVID C. and JEMIMA (LEACH) COCKE/COX. This family lived at Fort Blackamore, Scott Co., VA. Both were members of the stoney Creek Baptist Church, Scott Co., VA. Various spellings of this family name, such as McKENZIE, McKINSY, McKENZEY, and KINSEY are found in the records of this locale. However the name of the family as used by the family members who came to Kentucky was McKENZIE, this surname is adopted for this article." (See information for each of their children in the notes under their names.) Note for JOHN McKENZIE: There is further speculation that JOHN McKENZIE may have first married ELLEN BOGGS in Russell Co.,Va, and that BURGESS McKENZIE was a child of that marriage. There is also a JOHN McKENZIE,age 56 in the 1850 Johnson Co.,Ky census who was married to EASTER____?age 45, along with the following children: i. THOMAS J. 17 Ky ii. HETTY 14 Ky iii. STEPHEN H.11 Ky iv. ANNA 8 Ky v. MARGARET E. K. 5 Ky vi. JULIA 2 Ky ANA HAMILTON 79 Va These children are shown repeatedly throughout the marriage and birth records of Johnson Co.,Ky. I know that this is pure speculation on my part, but I believe that this JOHN McKENZIE was also the son of the elder JOHN McKENZIE and his marriage to ELLEN BOGGS. It was not uncommon for a father to name two sons after himself by two different wives. Children of JOHN McKENZIE AND EASTER PATSY____? are: i. THOMAS J.3 McKENZIE,b. 1833 in Johnson Co.,Ky.m. James Henry2 McKenzie (John1) (Source: East Kentuckian March 1987,page 11.) was born 1803 in Scott Co., Va.;d. 1863 in Johnson Co., Ky. He married Francis "Fanny" Estep (Source: Janice Foster.) 1825, d/O Samuel Estep and Mary Lane. She was born Abt. 1805 in Scott Co., Va.;d. Abt. 1864. Notes for James Henry McKenzie: From the "East Kentuckian."(Contributed by mary Weldinger) James Henry McKenzie, b ca 1803, d in Johnson Co., KY, ca 1863, m Frances "Fanny" Estep, b ca 1805, d ca 1864. James settled in the present Johnson County area and was on the 1837 Floyd Co., KY Tax List. He was listed on the 1836 Scott Co., VA Personal Property Tax List. He owned no property until 1848-49 when he paid taxes on 50 acres on Toms Creek. As Fanny is listed on the 1864 Tax List this indicates James died sometime previously. On the 1865 Tax List the farm has been taken over by one of the sons which indicates Fanny died probably in 1864. A letter from John Fred Williams to Minnie McKenzie, dated Oct. 19, 1963 was reproduced in the "Eastern Kentuckian" September 1987, page 23. The letter included information stating that James Henry and Fanny lived on Slate Branch. Settled at Sitka, Kentucky (from Betty Porterfield, family tradition) Notes for Francis "Fanny" Estep: From the East Kentuckian, September 1993, page 23:(Contributed by Mary Weldinger) Frances "Fanny" (Estep) McKenzie, thought to have died by 1864, is still living in the 1880 Johnson Co., KY census, age 74, living with son-in-law, Levi Salyer, House 7, Flat Gap Prescinct 3. All of David's children moved to Johnson Co. Ky, with the exception of Burgess and Nancy. Information from Betty Porterfield (family tradition). From the September 1987 "East Kentuckian" (contibuted by Mary Weldinger) Donald B. Fairchild, and his wife Ann, 10402 Prouty Road, Painesville, Ohio, furnished a copy of a letter by the late John Fred Williams, Ashland, KY. This is from the pages of the "Licking Valley Courier," West Liberty, KY, we quote some excerpts from a letter by Ernest McKenzie, Volga, KY, which appeared in the Letters Column of the Sept. 23, 1976 issue and included a photo. "This old house is located on Lower Peter Cave Branch, better known as McKenzie Branch, a tributary of Big Paint Creek in Johnson Co.,Ky. McKenzie Branch got its name from David McKenzie who came from Virginia in the early 1840's. He built one room about 16 feet square from huge yellow poplar logs. During the Civil War he erected a similar room from yellow pine. It was during this latter construction that a group of Civil War soldiers came along. It can't be verified which side they represented, but they asked David McKenzie why his son Bud (age 14) was not in the army. McKenzie replied that he was taking no part in the war between the states. The officer replied that he would climb upon the house and get the boy. The old man replied that the first man that reached the top of the ladder would receive a hatchet between his eyes. The soldiers departed in peace. This house has been the residence of five generations of McKenzie's. It is in excellent condition considering its age. The top of the chimney has been removed and roofed over. David's son, Lafayette; grandson, William H.; William H.'s son, Forest; and Forest's son, Everett, all lived there.Forest, now deceased, was born here and lived out his 84 years here. This property lies in the take area of the proposed Paint Creek Dam. The McKenzie family reluctantly disposed of this property to the Corps of Engineers, but the Corps let the house slip through their fingers. (It was sold to a private individual)" It is believed that this house is the same building that was moved to the Mountain HomePlace. The Mountain HomePlace in Paintsville, Kentucky The Mountain HomePlace, a living history working farm of the 1850's is located on a 40 acre tract of land on Paintsville Lake, Paintsville, Kentucky. The HomePlace as it is referred to is an actual working farm on a day-to-day basis as farming and survival was in Eastern Kentucky in the 1850's. The HomePlace was developed to show people and especially school children from around the area the cultures and heritage of our forefathers. McKenzie Farmstead The homestead at the Mountain HomePlace was the home of David McKenzie and his wife, Anna Saunders. A great deal of information about the McKenzie Farmstead was gotten from Everett McKenzie and his sister, May McKenzie Williams. It seems that the cellar and the smokehouse were one and the same for some time at the McKenzie house. This 11 X 15 foot building was built into the bank next to and in front of the well house. The smokehouse was used for smoking and salt curing the pork that was hung there for later use. Hickory wood was used for smoking the meat. There was a salting table where the meat was laid to be salted before hanging and a salt trough for storing the salt. The smokehouse was used for storing the family's supply of meat and also for storing "canned" vegetables and there were always barrels full of pickled "stuff" (beans, corn, salt pickles to name a few). Fresh vegetables were also stored in the smokehouse for later use by the family. Wells were hand dug and lined with rock. They served as the family's water supply as well as their refrigerator. Items that needed to be kept cold in the summer were hung in the well. This included milk, butter, and fresh chicken. The milk and butter were kept in a can inserted into another can or bucket. A well house was built around the well to protect the water from animals, to protect the small children playing in the yard, and to assist in drawing a bucket of water. A stone paved walkway ran from the west end of the porch, around the side of the house, to the well and smokehouse. There was a walk made of stepping stones running between the back of the kitchen and the smokehouse. There was a barn built of large hewn logs in the back corner of the garden. It was about 20' X 20' and had six stalls. It was probably one pen with split boards nailed over the interstices. There was a front and back entrance. The log barn was torn down by Everett McKenzie in the 1940s and he built a pole log barn. There was a hog pen just beyond the barn and the hogs, before butchering time, were put into an 8' X 8' log house to fatten. The barn you see across the road from the McKenzie house was donated by Harry Powers in honor of his father. It was moved to this site from Magoffin County. There is a great deal of split rail fence on the property and this is in keeping with the fences at the McKenzie Farmstead. The fences ran up and to and along the ridgetops. Evidently they surrounded the corn growing area and the pasture separately. The corn was grown for feed for the animals and to grind into meal for the family's use. It was mostly grown up the hollow on the bottoms and up the slopes, in patches wherever there was a place that corn would grow. The largest patches were "two to three acres." Fences were not only used to keep animals in but also to keep them out. A garden was necessary for growing vegetables for use by the family. Vegetables were harvested and canned, dried, "holed up" in the ground, or stored in a cool place in order to preserve it for later use. Plowing was done by mules or horses and the garden and corn patches hoed and made by the "sweat of the brow." In the early days of the farmstead, no outhouse was provided for the family's use. Family members went to the back of the garden where they were hid or sheltered by a growth of elder bushes. It seemed that the outhouses came in to use in the 1920s or early 1930s in this particular area. The yard was bare of grass and was kept clean by sweeping. Loose debris was swept over to the branch on one side and over to the paling fence or grass on other sides (whichever was closer). The creek bed served as the road well into this century. The McKenzie House The house was most likely build in 1860. It's a double pen, saddlebag, story and a loft structure. The east pen is the older of the two log pens. It consists of 9 poplar logs on the front and back and 8 logs on each side averaging about 13" in height and about 6" in thickness. This part of the house was put together with pegs. The daubing in the gaps (interstices) between the logs is composed of a clay/mud composition. The interior log walls are covered with vertical tongue and groove, oak boards 5" to 7" wide and 3/4" thick. Many of the houses of this period were papered every year with newspapers and later simple decorative wallpaper. The ceiling consists of seven beams resting upon oak ledgers at either end. The ceiling appears to be discolored or painted with a thin black creosote type substance. Some claim it was from burning coal in the fireplace. Others agree and also attribute some of the coloring to flies that sat on the ceiling. It was assumed that there was a corner stair in the northwest corner of the room leading to the loft. The second beam out from the corner had been cut out to allow headroom and the floor boards in the northwest corner of the loft had been cut out. If you look very closely, you might see a "shadow" of the corner stair/ladder. The stone fireplace in this room is different in construction when contrasted to that of the west pen. It measures 4' at its widest and the hearth measures 5'7" by 2'5:. The mantel does not appear to be original. It is nailed over the top of the later vertical siding. The original mantel was probably a bracketed shelf. Probably the earliest cooking took place in the east pen fireplace. This room in the house measures 16'3" X 16'4". The sixteen foot measurement was a standard measurement for the one room English yeoman's cottage and this dimension was transferred to the souther and middle colonies of North America. Families at this time commonly referred to this as the front room. They were careful never to let the fire go out in the fireplace since they cooked in the fireplace before the kitchen was built. Two windows in this room let in light. You may be able to see some poplar wooden plugs in the front door lintel. It seemed that a hole was drilled in the doorjam and a lock of each newborn child's hair was placed in the hole. It was then covered with a wooden plug. It was believed that this would ward off diseases and serious illnesses such as the "tizic", a dry wheezing similar to asthma. The second floor retains almost all of its original material from the pen's early construction. The flooring is tongue and groove poplar nailed with cut nails. The door is a 5 board 3 batten door likely added when the west pen was built and when an outside stair would probably have been built. The 3 1/2" X 4" or 4" X 4" rafters are poplar. In each gable there are three 4" X 4" poplar studs that are notched into the gable logs. With many double pen houses in East Kentucky, one log pen was constructed first. Then as family needs grew or when means allowed, the second pen was built with the chimney between it and the older pen. Often, a generation or two went by before a second pen was added but it appears that the west pen was built about 10 years after the east pen. This room measures 14' 4" X 16' 4" making it a little smaller than the east pen. The floor has 46 tongue and groove oak boards nailed with 10 or 12 p wire nails. The walls are covered with newspaper fragments, the most prevalent being the Louisville Courier-Journal. The ceiling consists of 7 pine 2" X 6" beams, 2'11" high by 2' *1/2" wide. The three part smoothed sandstone hearth measures 4' 7" long by 2' 2 1/2" wide. The fireplace shows traces of whitewash and has a simple brown painted plant mantel. The east pen hearth stones were not whitewashed because they were always hot fro a constant fire there. The rear wall of the fireplace demonstrates intense reddening particularly from the floor of the firebox to about one-half the way up the wall. This indicates the burning of coal along with their use of wood as fuel. The second floor flooring of the west pen consists of 5 1/2" to 6 1/2" wide, tongue and groove, poplar boards. The boards are 1" thick and nailed with both cut and wire nails. The flooring is original to this room. A circular hole about 10" in diameter was cut into the floor of both the east and west pens to carry the woodstove flue. These metal stoves replaced the open-hearth fireplaces as a heating source probably in the later 1930s when the chimney top was removed. There are 7 rafters and no ridge board in this loft. There are five exterior doors in the McKenzie dwelling all of which are board and batten construction. Additionally, there is one interior door and two doorways. The front door of the west pen is unpainted and constructed of six pine boards that vary in length. All nailing is from the exterior to the interior of the door, and the wire nails display a repeated 5 nail stud pattern. Observed from the interior, this door is hinged along the right side. Hardware consists of two butt hinges and one box lock. The front door of the east pen is similar to the door on the west pen except that it was painted brown. It's an early style door but a replacement. It's of seven board three batten construction and has two butt hinges and one box lock. The oldest door in the house is the back door of the east pen. It is made up of 5 boards and 3 battens all of poplar. The door is nailed with cut nails and has the distinction of being nailed from both sides. It's hinged along the right side with two butt hinges and shows evidence of a thumb latch and lift bar which is missing. It was attached to the lean-to side of the door. This door was probably an exterior northern exit from the eastern pen of the McKenzie house before the frame addition of the log kitchen. It later opened into the log kitchen. Evidence of eight current or former window openings is preserved in the McKenzie dwelling. The front porch utilized mortises on the east pen's walls to attach tension stringers. The east pen had a porch early, probably when it was first built. The original porch must have been extended when the west pen was constructed. The porch was 4' 6" out from the main house to the dripline. The original porch very likely had chamfered porch posts with mortised rails. The chamfering begins just above the rail. The porch roof was not a continuation of the main roof but began below the house's extended top plate log. The guttering along the porch roof makes a continuous wooden trough. There is evidence that this house had a log kitchen built right up against the back of the main house. There are four 1 1/2" diameter auger holes drilled into the north (rear) face of the east pen. They are in a pattern indicating a possible connection with the old log kitchen. The log kitchen probably post-dated the east pen but pre-dated the west pen. The Chimney The chimney is constructed of rough squared sandstone. The east pen originally had a chimney that extended, at the base, 2' 6" out from the west wall. When the west pen was built another flue was added, built against the back of the first chimney stack. This second flue extended 1' 7" more making the combined chimney 4' 1" across. So you see the stone chimney is actually two separate chimney stacks backed against one another. While the chimney stacks proper consist of rough squared stone, the hearth areas have well dressed stone. Inside the firebox, the stones are parged with a mud/clay type mortar. This parging (which was an inch or two thick) was evidently intended to smooth the firebox as well as protect the firebox stones from heat deterioration. Starting at the bottom of the chimney, the base/foundation of it consists of the largest stones. The stones grow smaller as the chimney grows in height. The chimney base's bottom extends about 1 1/2 feet below the log walls. Underneath each hearth area (that area that extends out into the wood floors) squared stones underlay the edges thus supporting the closest floor joist and supporting the log walls where the hearth opening is. The area inside the squared stones is filled with rubble. On top of the squared stones and rubble the hearth slabs are laid. All of the chimney is laid with mortar. The mortar is a yellowish colored clay mixture. When dismantling the chimney for moving to this site, it was found that the mud mortar was very hard and more stable than might have been expected, since it was almost 100% still in place. This leads one to believe that heat generated in the chimney flues baked the mud mortar into an even harder consistency. This mud mortar appears to be of the same make-up as the parging that was stuccoed inside the fireplace. He married MARTHA "PATSY" WEBB(Source: Betty McKenzie Porterfield, 1997.) 1840 in Cook Co., Va.; d/o JOHN WEBB, Jr. and NANCY QUILLAN. She was born April 14, 1823 in Scott Co., Va.; and died Abt. 1880 in Elna,Johnson Co., Ky. Notes for HUGH "HUEY" McKENZIE: The following information was provided by Betty Porterfield (family tradition): Hugh McKenzie was the youngest of 5 brothers who left Scott County, Virginia, about 1850, and settled in Johnson County, Kentucky. Four of the boys settled around the Big Paint Creek area, the fifth boy ended up at Sitka, Kentucky. A sixth brother, Burgess, remained in Virginia. Hugh may have gotten his property through a land grant from the state of Kentucky. The site of his home was the area between the Patty Flat Cemetery (McKenzie Cemetery) and the county road a few hundred feet to the north. Hugh and Martha "Patsy" Webb McKenzie are buried in the cemetery said to be named after her. Betty lists the date of his death as July 16, 1879. "Patsy" may have been the nickname for Martha but she favored "Patty". Only the cemetery remains on the original property. The cemetery, now, overlooks the Paintsville Lake where the sound of motor boats have replaced the tinkle of cow bells and the ruffle of cornfields in the wind. To get to Patty Flats Cemetery from Paintsville, take 172 and turn on to Cantrell's Creek. After passing the last house on Cantrell's Creek, Patty Flats Cemetery will be the second gravel road on the left. The name of this cemetery is Patty Flats. The McKenzie part may come in because of the fact that the land that the cemetery is on used to be owned by Trigg McKenzie. We visited the Patty Flat Cemetery in October 1999. Found the following stones that appeared to be new: Martha McKenzie April 14, 1823 and Huey McKenzie Sept 10, 1841. The "East Kentuckian" dated March 1981 had a listing of the Patty Flat Cemetery that was copied June 20, 1978 by Paul Fairchild. He lists a Martha Webb McKenzie and a Hugh McKenzie in unmarked graves located in the 4th row. The list copied the cemetery facing east and from left to right. Jenette, born in 1823, married Enoch Pratt. Sarah, born in 1827, married John Cantrell and Johnathan, born in 1829, married Mary Rhoton. They all married in Virginia. In 1844, these families migrated to Johnson County, Kentucky and settled in the Flat Gap area. Martha and her husband, Hugh McKenzie, reared their 11 children on the McKenzie Homestead. According to the Webb family history, her ancestors were Quakers who came from England and were active in the military, Daniel Boone was a distant relative. Notes for MINNIE McKENZIE: From the "East Kentuckian" September, 1987, page 23:(Contributed by Mary L. Weldinger) Copy of a letter from the late John Fred Williams of Ashland, KY, dated Oct. 19, 1963, to Miss Minnie McKenzie, c/o Mr. and Mrs. Everett Conley, Staffordsville, KY. "I certainly enjoyed visiting with you and Everett and Suna when I was last in Johnson County. My Aunt Maud Vaughan enjoyed it too. I learned many new things from my conversation with you and was especially interested to know that your grandmother McKenzie - James Henry's wife - was an Estep, Frances Estep, before her marriage. I found in the Scott County, Virginia, marriage records that David Jesse McKenzie, a brother of James Henry, and father of Lafayette and Oliver of McKenzie Branch, Married Cynthia Estep on January 7, 1832. Also, I found that William M. McKenzie, Newton's father, who lived on Stone Coal, married in Virginia on September 27, 1827, Barbary Estep. The record shows that both David Jesse and William M. were married by John Pendleton of Scott County, Virginia. (The same John Pendleton married my grandparents, Samuel Williams and Catharine Kimbler in 1832.) I suppose your grandmother, Frances McKenzie and Cynthia and Barbary, David Jesse and William M.'s wives, all of whom were Esteps, were either sisters or first cousins. I found in the old census records in Washington the following record for 1850 for Johnson County (charts were not printed to save space) James (Henry) McKenzie, 47, b 1803, VA, Frances, 45, b 1805, VA; William J. (Jesse) 21, b 1829, VA; Henry P. (Patrick), 16, b 1834, VA; Joseph K., 14, b 1836, VA; Martin B., 12, b 1838, KY; Francis M., 10, 1840, KY; Sarah M., 7, b 1843, KY; Andrew J., 6, b 1844, KY. These were all the children of James Henry and Frances (or Fanny) listed as being at home. But next on the list and appearing to live at the next house were: (again, charts were not printed to save space) Moses Fairchild, 29, b 1821, VA; and Katharine Fairchild, 19, b 1831, VA. Farther down on the list I found: Philip Stambough, 21, b 1829, KY; Mary (Polly or Pop) Stambaugh, 21, b 1829, VA; and Winfield Stambaugh, 1 yr. Old, b in KY. As you know, Katharine Fairchild and Mary (Polly) Stambaugh were daughters of James Henry and Fanny McKenzie and sisters to your father William Jesse. I was interested to know, also, that your grandparents, James Henry and Fanny, lived on Slate Branch. Tell Everett I would like to know the exact location of their house if he can find this information. Also, tell Everett I'd like to see the old papers he mentioned, when I come up again. I have the names and approximate birth dates of most all of your grandfather James Henry McKenzie's brothers and sisters who came to Kentucky. There was only one sister, I believe, who came to Kentucky and that was Elizabeth McKenzie who married George Washington Webb. I'd like very much to know the names of James Henry's father. I wonder if you recall hearing your father say what the names of his grandfather and grandmother McKenzie were. I have thought his grandfather's name might have been Reuben since Newton had a son Reuben and there was another Reuben McKenzie. This is only a guess and may be entirely wrong. It may have been Jesse or Newton for these names occur often among his descendants. With the very best wishes to you and to Everett and Suna, Cordially, John Fred Williams. P.S. I found in a book I have on the Big Sandy the following information on the marriage of your parents: "William J. McKenzie married Nancy Rice, March 4, 1852 in Johnson County. Reverend Jimmie Pelphrey performed the marriage ceremony." 135. viii. MARY ELLEN McKENZIE(Source: Mary L. Weldinger,"Electronic."), born February 09, 1855 in Johnson Co., Ky. She married EZRA W. Notes for OLIVER B. McKENZIE: Additional information from "Early Families of Eastern & Southeastern Ky by William Kozee, page 170. The McKenzie Branch School, that is now at the Mountain HomePlace near Paintsville, Kentucky, was originally located on property owned by O. B. McKenzie. The following is excerpted from a handout we acquired at the Mountain HomePlace near Paintsville. This is only part of the information. I will post what it has to say about the one-room schoolhouse that was on the O.B. McKenzie property, located on McKenzie Branch, if anyone is interested. "Like charity and church services, school began in the home. Prior to 1840 education in Kentucky was on a do-it-yourself basis. There were no public schools and professional teachers were rare. Alarmed at the illiteracy in the state, a group of citizens met in 1830 and organized the Kentucky Education Association. Through its efforts and the work of other groups, the legislature in 1838 passed Kentucky's first public school law. Progress was slow and it was well into the 1850s before a workable system of public schools began to evolve. There is little recorded evidence of Johnson County's early efforts at education. However, the history of its formal education began with the election of School Commissioners in the 1840s but the first school building, as such, was not built until 1851, at Flat Gap. The second was built in 1855 at the mouth of School House Branch. This is not to say that education was neglected. However it was managed, by subscription schools, tutors, or parents teaching their own, most of the children of the early settlers were taught at least to read and write. The 1850 census revealed an almost 50% illiteracy rate in Johnson and other Big Sandy Counties. The 1870 census credits Johnson County with substantial improvement in its literacy rate. This must have been due in part to the efforts of Reverend William Jayne, a Baptist preacher and teacher who settled at Flat Gap and opened the Enterprise Academy in 1851. The unusual school turned out teachers who by the state of the art, were unusually well trained. Another outstanding private school, the Medina Seminary, was opened by Reverend John R. Long in 1870 at Oil Springs. In the early days the school authorities placed most of the responsibility for building and supervising the school on the community. They elected neighbors they knew and trusted as trustees. They felt free to use it for meetings and other purposes of interest to the people of the district. The people could truly say, "This is our school." Few institutions have been held in such fond regard and recalled in such nostalgic terms as the little red schoolhouse. It ranks with the old oaken bucket, the little brown church in the vale, and pictures of the old home place that are remembered by millions as they recall that long ago way of life. But the Johnson County schoolhouses were not painted red; they were mostly white, if not of unpainted log construction. The rude log schools with their puncheon floors, were around for nearly a century and provided the typical school experience for the great majority of Kentuckians. The cracks between the logs were filled with mud to keep out the wind on a cold winter day. Much of the furniture was hewn from logs. Students in these early schools used goose quill pens and ink made from polk or elderberry juice. Equipment was limited and it was left to the inventiveness of the teachers, community leaders and older pupils to come up with the homemade learning tools of that time. Built in the late nineteenth century, this is one of Johnson County's common schools. The original site of the building was a tract of the O.B. McKenzie property located on McKenzie Branch. The Johnson County School Board received title to the half acre plot on which it stood in 1898. The site also contained a well for the school's use. The McKenzie Branch School is a rectangular log building one and one-half stories in height and containing a single classroom. The only entrance to the school is in the gable end facing the road. Each family whose children attended the school contributed four logs to the structure. Thus, the preparation of the logs is varied but half dovetailed notching is used to join the logs. You will note that the sources of light were the four windows, the oil lamps that sat of their high brackets attached to the walls, and the front door when the weather permitted it to remain open. You will also note that the benches were handmade and did not take into consideration the comfort of the occupants. The school year began after blackberry picking time in July and lasted for six months. The class could range in size from thirty to sixty pupils and in age from six to twenty. The teacher and the classroom supplies were provided by the county. It was the teacher who was the key to the success of the district schools. The county school commissioners and the district trustees were responsible for examining and certifying teachers. Teacher salaries were always low and the differences in salary among counties and districts were extreme. In many neighborhoods teachers had no choice but to board in homes where board was cheap - typically $1.50 - $2.00 per week, with the option of staying over for the weekend at no extra charge. Because of their knowledge and authority, the teacher stood tall in the eyes of the community and the students. Teachers were expected to be models of behavior and scholarship, get the needed education, dress well, and live on wages that were not always paid on time. Educational aids included one box of chalk, erasers, a pressed poplar blackboard covered with slate impregnated paint, a coal bucket to fire the Burnside No. 1, and a 10 gallon water bucket with two cups that set on a small table or shelf behind the front door. The parents and teacher contributed books to the school's permanent collection. Since the building was seldom locked, it also served the function of a public library. Many children found it necessary to cross a creek or branch on their way to school. This might mean walking carefully on stepping stones to avoid getting wet, but these proved useless when the creek flooded after heavy rains. In some neighborhoods swinging footbridges were built across major streams but it was often necessary to walk greater distances to make use of them. A common provision for crossing a creek was the footlog. Most pupils rushed through the hazards of their walk (which they hardly noticed) to reach school early, not only because teachers disapproved of tardiness but also because this allowed some play time. The clothes in the early pioneer days were the products of spinning, weaving, and leather craft. This was in the days when the boys wore woolen linzies, woven stockings and sacks and jeans of homespun fabrics. The girls wore woven skirts dyed in many colors, and other items that were woven, knitted, crocheted, and darned. They wrapped their heads with plaited and braided hair tied with colored ribbons or held their heads high when their hair was curled with hot metal curlers. The boys wore overalls and jackets made of blue denim material. A new pair of overalls with a one dollar watch secured by a bright chair, a 25 cent barlow knife safely in their pocket and a small sack of smoking tobacco in their hip pocket meant high status in those days. They called it being a high "mucketty-muck." At eight o'clock the bell sounded for "books." After the seating came the roll call at which the scholars answered "present." Often pupils would explain the absences of other children. Some teachers opened the school day with an opening exercise which was usually devotional in nature. They would begin with a brief scripture reading, possibly the Lord's Prayer was repeated in unison, and this was followed by singing a favorite hymn. Later the "Pledge of Allegiance" to Old Glory was added to the opening exercises. Next came the first round of recitations, beginning with the primer class and followed by the classes in readers. In early years, scholars stood for recitations before the long recitation benches became standard equipment. Also in these early years, pupils learned mostly by oral memorization with the result being a babel of sound. Old-timers have often explained the "blab school" as necessary because this was the only way the schoolmaster knew the pupils were busy. Arithmetic usually followed reading and students found it fun to learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Especially when they used the blackboard. Of course, learning the multiplication table through the 12s was a different story. I most early schools these two subjects filled the time before morning recess. Only fifteen minutes long and religiously observed by most teachers, recess provided welcome relief from sitting on hard benches and trying to give attention to the same old text books over and over. It was also a chance to get something from the lunch pail to "tide one over" (hold one's appetite in check) until lunchtime. But mostly, recess was for play. After the quick burst of play, the children returned to the waiting books. Only one or two needs might delay the prompt return to the morning school work. One need involved a rather lengthy period of time in line at the outdoor facilities, and the other was for time to quench one's thirst. The teacher frequently asked two older boys to pass the water bucket to each row of children. It was considered good manners to dip out no more water than one could drink, but if some did happen to be left in the dipper, it was sprinkled on the floor. Sometimes a child drank from the long handled or gourd dipper two or three times before they were satisfied. Later it was no surprise to hear the sounds of belching. After arithmetic came various other recitations, and then came spelling. Pupils spelled in groups according to the reader they were using. They stood in a straight line facing the teacher and spelled the words orally. By noon everyone was ready for dinner. Children of the same family would gather around the eldest member who portioned out the contents of the basket or pail. During good weather everyone ate outdoors under the shade trees which flourished on most school grounds. Size of the dinner bucket varied with the number of children in a family. The fare depended upon the season and the expertise of the cook at home. They brought more of what they had at home and how practical it was to pack so that the "vittles" would survive handling until they were eaten. Tight lids were put on the lunch buckets to keep food from spilling but more important to keep out the ants. During dinner the children were often joined by a passel of dogs roused from their snooze under the schoolhouse and ready to perform their cleanup duty and share in the feast. Often the pickings were slim and dogfights were common. In good weather, the outside diners usually hurried through their meals in order to have some time left for play. Cold and inclement weather usually meant earing more leisurely at one's des. Dinner was a simple but enjoyable respite from the rigorous morning schedule. Teachers are either at their desks or, in good weather, in a shady, comfortable spot. Skylarking and humor were a normal part of the dinner hour. Often someone would offer to trade some item from his bucket for something more to his taste. However, there wasn't much need in trading because just about everybody had the same thing. Teasing took place during the dinner hour, as it did at other times during the school day. The amount and variety of teasing depended upon teacher supervision and the opportunity for other recreation. Even during "books" teasing could be done by means of grimaces, naughty gestures, lip movements, and winking. One method of teasing commonly used was a whittling motion of one index finger over the other and mouthing the words "shamey, shamey" without sound. One common form of teasing in the school yard was to make fun of unusual dress or appearance of another pupil. Boys teased girls for being scrawny, red-headed, or freckled, and pulled their plaits or curls. Younger pupils were teased for poor coordination and lack of athletic ability. Teenage pupils teased each other about sweethearts. Though most teachers and pupils remained at school during the noon hour, Pupils from nearby farms were permitted to go home for their dinner. A few teachers lived close enough to do the same, but this involved some risks. At one o'clock the bell summoned everyone back to books. There were more recitations, letters, geography or history before the midafternoon recess. After recess there were recitations, physiology, and civil government classes. By four o'clock everyone was ready to go home, and school usually dismissed at that time. Coats and wraps were gathered up, dinner buckets and baskets collected, farewells called, and the scholars left for home. Sometimes certain pupils remained in school after dismissal time, not by choice but for disciplinary reasons. Scholars might voluntarily remain after school to get extra help from the teacher, but this was relatively rare. The long school day ended and the children went storming forth to freedom. Some played last lick or tag with schoolmates until the paths toward home separated. Those who dared to dawdle along the way found many excuses for dalliance. Orchards and melon patches were temptations for some of the older boys; the streams with crawdads and frogs always proved interesting; on hot summer afternoons the old swimming hole inspired many to ignore the warning to come straight home; siblings who went home and told tales out of school had to be dealt with; rocks waited to be skipped across ponds and pools and creeks; "grape trees" that hung with ripening "possum" and fox grapes needed climbing; fruits like pawpaws and persimmons were distractions; and many other inviting projects were waiting to be investigated by sharp, young lads. The girls shared in many of these extra-curricular activities. They gathered chestnuts, hazel nuts, hickory nuts, and walnuts, shared apples and pears that hung invitingly over fence rows and roads, and chatted with their schoolmates. Younger pupils, but boys and girls, tended to stick together, particularly when older brothers and sisters disliked being bothered with them, preferring the company of their peers in age and interests. Some children amused themselves on the long walks to and from school by daring each other to perform feats such as walking along the top of the fence or sneaking into a farmer's orchard. Throwing rocks at anything along the road was almost a daily ritual; fence posts, tree trunks, and songbirds made handy targets. Another form of amusement was to engage in rock fights with fellow students or outsiders. In winter, snowballs provided an ample supply of ammunition for many contest of skill and dodging. Often some of the older pupils had disagreements, and controversy broke out. Fights resulted, sometimes with serious consequences. Teachers usually whipped participants the next day at school. Sometimes pupils who were determined to fight over their differences would go home first, and then meet to do battle later when they were no longer under the teacher's discipline. Despite the distances and hazards encountered, most scholars appeared to enjoy their walks to and from school and interesting stories have been recounted concerning these experiences. But after all the adventures of the day, the pupils finally reached home and the evening chores in store for them there. Children of OLIVER McKENZIE and MARTHA BLANTON: 287. i. WILLIAM WALLACE3 McKENZIE(HUGH "Huey"2,JOHN1)was born March 14, 1857 in Redbush, Johnson Co., Ky., and died September 04, 1915 in Fugate, Johnson Co., Ky. He married CATHERINE "Katy" Estep June 06, 1880 in Fugate, Johnson Co., Ky., d/o HIRAM ESTEP and ALCIE/ALSEY CANTRELL. She was born February 16, 1862 in Head of Mudlick, Johnson Co., Ky., and died May 21, 1936 in Fugate, Johnson Co., Ky. Notes for WILLIAM WALLACE McKENZIE: The following information was provided by Betty Porterfield: William Wallace McKenzie was born in 1857 at Redbush, Johnson County, Kentucky. Not much is known of his early childhood, except that it was spent in Redbush and that his family was farmers. The chief crop being tobacco. On June 6, 1880 he married Catharine "Katy" Estep. He fathered 15 children, 9 survived. He was a devout Christian and regretted, until his death, that he did not follow his calling to become a minister. He died in 1915 at the age of 58. He was buried in the Patty Flat Cemetery (McKenzie Cemetery) located near the home he lived in with his family. William and Catharine apparently spent their first years in the same house with William's parents. No later than nine years after their marriage, they were living near Catharine's parents in Redbush, Ky. They moved to Summerford, Ohio around 1905 but it only took about six months for them to get homesick for the hills, so he moved his family back to the head of Mud Lick, "To the old log cabin up in the hollow where Taylor Williams and Uncle Milt Sayers lived. Uncle Jack lived up the hollow from this place". Quoted Maggie McKenzie Burchett. She is the only remaining member of William and Catharine's family left at this time. It was around 1910 that he bought the property that had been the home of his father, Hugh McKenzie. This home and barn were located between the main road and the cemetery. They remained there the rest of their lives. In those days, when you died, the family took care of the burial. There was a three day mourning period. The body was put in a pine box and kept in the parlor until ready for burial. Neighbors would take turns sitting with the body. When he died, the last gift his sons gave him was a small white house, with a gingerbread trim, built over his grave to keep the rain out of his face. After passing the last house on Cantrell's Creek, Patty Flats Cemetery will be the second gravel road on the left. The name of this cemetery is Patty Flats. The McKenzie part may come in because of the fact that the land that the cemetery is on use to be owned by Trigg McKenzie. More About William Wallace McKenzie: Occupation: Farmer Place of Burial: Patty Flat Cemetery, Fugate, Kentucky Special Fact: Member of the International Order of Odd Fellows Notes for CATHERINE "Katy" ESTEP: The following information was provided by Ione McKenzie: There were 15 children born to Katy and her husband, William Wallace McKenzie. Nine of them lived. Proctor Knott was named for a traveling minister who held revivals in different communities throughout the year. Three of the girls are living in Kentucky (as of 1988). All of the brothers and sisters continued living in the South. Katy was a hard-working, strong-willed woman. She worked in the fields when she was needed and pieced beautiful quilts as a hobby. The following information was provided by Betty Porterfield: Katy Estep was born in 1861 in Redbush, Johnson County, Kentucky. She married William Wallace McKenzie and helped rear their nine children to adulthood. She was responsible for the cleaning and the washing. The washing was done by hand with lye soap she made herself. She canned the food they ate from the garden they cared for. She would rise long before dawn to cook enough food to feed her family for the day. She would bake bread, fry chicken, slice ham, etc. Everything had to be on the table and ready to eat by dawn. When dawn came she went to the fields with her husband and children. It was custom to only cook once a day, place everything on the table and when it was time to eat it only had to be warmed a little and the family could return to the fields much faster that way. This custom is still carried on in some homes even though modern conveniences are installed in most of the homes. After her husband's death, she and the children continued running the farm. She died in 1935, at the age of 79 and was buried alongside her husband in the "McKenzie Cemetery", Patty Flats. The most vivid memory of my grandmother Estep was a trip made to see her in 1929. She had had a telephone installed. One with a crank on the side. She would crank and crank on that thing but could never get it to work. She would get so disgusted she would end up stepping out on the porch and yelling for who ever she wanted. The hills would echo and with help from neighbors the word was passed on to the person she wanted to speak with. More About CATHERINE "Katy" ESTEP: Occupation: Homemaker Place of Burial: "Patty Flats" McKenzie Cemetery, Fugate, Kentucky Special Fact: Cherokee Indian Marriage Notes for WILLIAM McKENZIE and CATHERINE ESTEP: The following information was provided by Betty McKenzie: In 1880, William Wallace McKenzie married Katy Estep. They were both born and reared in Redbush, Johnson Co., Ky. They set up housekeeping on a farm in Fugate, Ky. A beautiful location in the mountains outside of Redbush. Here they reared nine children to adulthood. Within the community of Fugate lived only a few families. They served each other, helping in any way they could. The only social events were through their church or school. This is where the young people would meet and many would eventually marry. Maggie and Alcie married the Burchett brothers, Hanna and Ollie married the Fairchild brothers and Tolbert and Trigg each married Baldwins. Martha married an Estep (relative of her mother) and Proctor married Mary Gambill. Colbert was the only son that married outside the hills. He met and married his wife when he went to London, Ohio to work. Six children built homes and spent their lives in Fugate. Trigg stayed on the home place. Proctor moved to Ohio, then to Oklahoma. The lives of the families still touch at least once a year. In July they met at the McKenzie Cemetery for an all-day camp meeting and reunion. It's dinner on the grounds and plenty of hymn singing. Tribute is paid to all those who have died that year. The music echoing through the hills is a great spiritual experience. This tradition was started long ago when families could not attend the funeral because of the travel distances and the mode of travel. Burial was made at the time of death and tribute was paid on this one day. Though burial is handled differently now, the tradition lives on. The cemetery was located on the McKenzie land. It was enclosed by a white picket fence. When we visited, we noticed a grave outside the fence. The grave was as neatly kept as the others. When we asked why the grave was outside the fence we were told the boy in the grave had been killed in a car wreck. He had lived a wild life and had been a disgrace to his family so, therefore, he could not be buried in hallowed ground. Today the cemetery has grown so large the fence has been changed to a chain-link and the grave is now enclosed with the others. Children of WILLIAM McKENZIE and CATHERINE ESTEP are: 343. i. He married MARY IRENE GAMBILL October 31, 1907 in Sedalia, OH; born April 07, 1890 in Redbush, Ky; died March 04, 1980 in Tulsa, OK. Notes for PROCTOR KNOTT McKENZIE: We have been told that Proctor Knott was named for a traveling minister who held revivals in different communities throughout the year. He was called PK by friends and family, called Proc by his wife. It may be just a coincidence, but in 1884, the Legislature took a tract that stretched over the headwaters of Beaver Creek and parts of Perry, Letcher and Breathitt Counties and called it Knott County in honor of Proctor Knott the governor. This is the same year that Proctor Knott McKenzie was born. The following information was provided by Betty Porterfield: He was born and reared in Redbush, Ky. He helped on the farm until 1907 when he married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Gambill. She was the sister of his close friend, John Gambill. He went to work in London, Ohio for the Ohio Electric Railroad Company and moved his family there. He soon made foreman and in 1915 he was moved to Columbus, Ohio as track foreman. He stayed in Columbus until after the war. When the war ended he moved his family to Pawnee, Oklahoma where he farmed, worked the roads, or any job he could find to make a living for his family. He finally found steady work at the Pawnee Mercantile Co. and was an employee for 10 years when illness forced him to take a leave of absence. Before he could return to work the depression hit and the Wholesale closed. He was without a job, so in 1932 he ran for Street Commissioner. He was elected by only 4 votes but after that he was re-elected by large majorities for the next 21 years. He retired in 1953 to go fishing. He died in 1963 and was buried in the cemetery he helped to build and landscape. He used to say "There's no place as beautiful and peaceful as the cemetery on the hill". So, he is at peace in a place he loved and was so proud of. From the Pawnee Chief Newspaper: P.K. It has been my intention to keep the streets and alleys in the very best condition possible with the equipment and funds we have. We have better equipment now and it is possible to do a better job. My experience on the streets the past many years helps me to know their needs better than I did in the beginning. This experience is something you have helped to pay for. I will appreciate your support. P.K. McKenzie P.K. McKenzie Makes Last Appeal: To the Voters of Pawnee: I would like to make this last appeal for your support in my last race for re-election as your Street Commissioner. Most of you know that if I am elected and serve this term I will be eligible to retire under Social Security. I have been your street commissioner for 18 years and I have appreciated your support. Win or lose, this is absolutely my last time to run for public office. Again I want to thank you for your support and fine cooperation. From the newspaper: P.K. McKenzie services held here Saturday Funeral services were held for well-known former Pawnee Street Commissioner, Proctor Knott McKenzie, 79, at 10:00 a.m. Saturday. He passed away at a local hospital on Wednesday, May 29. Born March 14, 1884 at Fuget, Kentucky, he married Mary Irene Gambill at Sedalia, Ohio on Oct. 31, 1907. They moved to Pawnee from Columbus, Ohio in 1919 and had lived here since. He was a member of the local Methodist church and was a member of the Pawnee IOOF lodge for 56 years. He served as Pawnee street commissioner when he had to furnish his own horses to pull what street graders were available and was in office when the first motorized equipment was bought during his 20-year tenure. More About Proctor Knott McKenzie: Cause of Death: Complications from goiter surgery. Church Affiliation: Methodist Medical Information: Goiter surgery, liver problem Occupation: City Road Commissioner Place of Burial: Pawnee, Oklahoma Siblings: 3 brothers/5 sisters Notes for Mary Irene Gambill: The following information was provided by Ione McKenzie: Mary was known as Rene. She died of natural causes. She had been blind in one eye since early childhood. She had surgery for a cataract on her good eye. One day she fell and hit an arm chair directly on the bandaged eye causing blindness. She gave up - her heart just stopped beating. She would have been 90 in one month. Rene made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Bert Porterfield, after the death of P.K. The following information was provided by Betty McKenzie Porterfield: She was born in Redbush, Kentucky in 1890. She attended school in Redbush and completed the 8th grade. She never attended high school. At age 17, she married P.K. McKenzie and they reared 8 children; 4 boys and 4 girls. With such a large family she worked long hours to take care of us. She also took care of her father until his death. His drinking gave her a lot of grief, but she never lost patience with him. All of her life was dedicated to her family. She was always there when we needed her. She was never too busy to too tired to sew a dress, iron a shirt or cook a meal. One of the outstanding memories I have of my childhood was mom and her "hobos". Our home was near a railroad track, and in those days a lot of men rode the rails. Our home was marked as a good place for food. Mother never turned anyone down, even though food was scarce at our home. She always found a way to feed us and anyone else who was hungry. From the Hominy Progress Newspaper - March 13, 1980: Funeral Services Held For Hominyans' Mother Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Irene McKenzie of Tulsa were conducted last Friday at the Poteet Funeral Chapel in Pawnee. Rev. Ray Engleking, pastor of the Pawnee United Methodist Church, officiated. The daughter of Chilton and Jane Gambill, Mrs. McKenzie was born April 7, 1890, in Redbush, Ky., and died March 4 in Tulsa at the age of 89 years, 10 months and 27 days. She married Proctor K. McKenzie in October, 1907, in Ohio. They moved to Pawnee in 1919 and were a part of that community most of their lives. She moved to Tulsa in 1965. Survivors are three sons, Glenn of Riverside, Calif., Jack of Sapulpa, Max of Hominy; four daughters, Mrs. Keith (Marie) Paden of Hominy, Mrs. Clara Hart of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Richard (Mary) Farguson of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Bert (Betty) Porterfield of Tulsa; 17 grandchildren and 21 great- grandchildren. Mrs. McKenzie had been a member of the Pawnee United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She often visited her son and daughter in Hominy. Mrs. McKenzie was preceded in death by her husband in 1963 and a son, Wayne, in 1979. Organist at the services was Ann Kline of Pawnee, Tanya McKenzie, soloist, sang "Amazing Grace," a favorite hymn of her grandmother. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Interment was in the Highland Cemetery at Pawnee under the direction of the Poteet Funeral Home. At the time of their marriage, PK was very ill. He was bedfast. Mary Irene married him so she could take care of him at his home. They lived in Fugate and Red Bush, Kentucky their first two years and then moved to London, Ohio. P.K. worked as a track foreman for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Rene, as Mary Irene was known, and PK had eight children. Since PK worked for the railroad, Rene and her children rode the train free of charge. She told me she would dress each of her five children all in white, board the train, and go grocery shopping. Can you imagine! PK had a private enclosed rail car he used for inspection of the rail tracks. On weekends he would take Glenn and Wayne on inspection trips. They would stop at hickory nut groves. The boys would get off the rail car and pick up large sacks of nuts then wait for PK to stop for them on the way home. They would also go rabbit hunting in the deep snow. Rabbits in those days were real good to eat. Wayne became ill with Bright's disease when he was around 7 years old. The doctor recommended they take him to a warmer climate. In 1918 Rene and PK packed their belongings, boarded a troop train headed for Oklahoma and hoped for the best. Glenn and Wayne had a ball! The soldiers were returning home - World War I was over and everyone was happy. They bought candy for Wayne and Glenn. Marie was treated like a little Princess. Clara and Mary were too young to run around on the train. Rene's father, Chilton Jeams Gambill, her sister Larue and her brother Lonnie and his family lived in Pawnee, Oklahoma. Her father was a successful blacksmith there. Lonnie worked for his father. When PK and his family arrived in Oklahoma, they rented a 420 acre farm approximately eight miles north of Pawnee. There were chores for everyone. They milked 40 head of cows and raised 100 head of hogs. They fed the seperated milk to the hogs rather than throw it away. Just think - today that is our low fat milk. They took the cream to the Pawnee Creamery. This consisted of four 5-gallon cans of cream per week which brought them $75.00. They had approximately four cases of eggs at $3.00 per case. Each case had 30 dozen eggs. This was a typical Saturday in town. They also raised 100 head of cattle which were rounded up and sold in the fall. They made large gardens and bought bushel baskets of apples, pears and peaches. Rene canned approximately 200 quart jars of fruits and vegetables every year. They butchered their beef and hogs for their meat which they treated and hung in what was called a smoke house. PK farmed some of the 420 acres; planting wheat, alfalfa and corn for feed for the cattle and horses. In the years between 1919 and 1925 Rene and PK had their last 3 children. Soon after Max's birth, Rene was taken to the hospital in Stillwater where she was operated for hystorectomy. She had to return to the hospital a second time. She was very ill for quite a while. Marie lived with Larue (whom the children called "Aunt Nan") and attended school. Glenn also lived there during the school months. He would ride his horse into Pawnee every Monday morning - it was a brown quarter horse name Stub - Glenn would throw the reins over the saddle horn and the horse would run the eight miles back to the farm. On Friday Glenn would go home. After three years on the farm, PK moved his family to town. Aunt Nan went to Texas and married Sam Frantz, a barber. PK and Rene moved into her house with Grandfather Gambil. PK went to work for a construction company building a two story natural stone building on Main Street in Pawnee. The lower floor was a large grocery store owned by Mr. Wes Roe. The top floor was a large two- bedroom apartment. This apartment was to appear in the McKenzie family again in years to come. Glenn worked for his Grandfather Gambil at the Blacksmith shop on weekends during school time and then all summer. His job was to help shoe the horses and care for the Indians' horses and buggies. He would take the horse and buggies from the blacksmith shop to the feed and grain barn. For this service he was paid $2.00 per horse and buggy. In those days the Indians were quite wealthy. The five Civilized Tribe Agency was stationed there in Pawnee. At one time the Agency, with its sandstone buildings, was very beautiful. After several years in the construction work, PK went to work for the Pawnee Mercantile Company which was a wholesale grocery outlet. On December 24, 1930, Grandfather Gambill was on his way home from the Blacksmith Shop when he was robbed of a large sum of money, killed and his body was found Christmas morning in a creek not far from his home. His assailent was never found. In 1931, PK was taken to the hospital with a liver infection. His liver had grown fast into his back. Glenn was attending school at Central State Teachers College in Edmond, Oklahoma and Marie was working at the Pawnee National Bank. PK was hospitalized for 30 days and not able to work for a year. Marie and Glenn took over caring for the family. Glenn went to work in the wholesale house in his Dad's place making $125.00 per month. This entailed delivering groceries to neighboring towns and unloading railroad box cars loaded with boxes of groceries and 100 lb sacks of flour and sugar. Another employee, a Canadian named Henry Drake, and Glenn had a 2-day load of groceries to deliver up in the oil fields. It was bitter cold (20 degrees) and they didn't get to deliver their last load. There were no motels or any place to stay overnight so they slept in the back of the truck. In those days the bananas came in long crates and were wrapped in gunny sacks. Henry and Glenn used the sacks for covers and slept in the crates. They nearly froze. In 1932, PK ran for a political job as City Street Commissioner. He won, and won the same election eleven more times in 24 years. PK had to buy a team of horses to pull the road grading machinery. They were beautiful big brown horses weighing around 1800 lb. each and cost $400, which was a lot of money in those days. PK died after undergoing a serious goiter operation in 1960. There were many complications - internal bleeding being what caused his death. 347. v. COLBERT McKENZIE, born July 01, 1886 in Redbush, Johnson Co., Ky.
