Notes:
Martin
and Anna Maria (Gysin) Heffelfinger
left Switzerland for America. During the
voyage, Anna Maria died. Martin and the
children entered at Philadelphia in 1740 on the ship Friendship. Incidentally, about 60 others died during the
voyage also. Source: Faust, Albert B.

From
Ruth J. Heffelfinger (Hilfsw
BIO 9 34 1941/1962), genealogy found at the Staatsarchiv
des Kantons Basel-Landschaft:
Ruth
writes on page 22
"According to Henry Heffelfinger
of Meyerstown, Pennsylvania: "Martin arrived in
Philadelphia September 23, 1740 in bad physical condition from the rigors of
starvation, but he did not remain at Philadelphia very long, and was urged by Caspar Wistar, a brass button
manufacturer and extensive land owner from Philadelphia to remove to the
frontier where Caspar's sister already resided. Martin must have readily agreed to come to
the Conestoga. Now the Conestoga is more
or less disputed as to its original designated area and I am at a loss to place
it property, but am of the opinion this was what was late the
White Oak district, lying between Conestoga Creek and Tulpehocken
Creek."
(The
name is familiar because of the pioneer covered wagons that later moved
westward out of this region.)
"Martin
remarried, to whom I do not know as yet, it may have been the Wistar woman. Only
first names were referred to in his will and he mentioned the child still
unborn. He is reputed to have died of
pneumonia, taking cold and his rundown condition was unable to fight off the
disease."

household includes three males over sixteen, two males under sixteen, and five
females.
From Staatsarchiv des Kantons Basel-Landschaft StABL, Hilfsw. BIO q 34 Ruth J. Heffelfinger 1941/1962:
"Caspar Wistar deeded land to
these settlers for a German Reformed Church just a few miles east of Meyerstown, the land and church are
still intact. This congregation was one
of the revolutionary hotbeds as the old records disclosed when they were
translated several years ago. ...just
across the Highway lies the site of Martin Jr.'s
first land warrant of 150 acres, 1759."
In
1771, he paid taxes on land in Heidelberg Township. He moved to Cumberland County after 1780.
Henry
Heffelfinger [of Meyerstown,
PA] goes on to
say that Martin served as a vigilante or "wildenheeder"
or "dierwecter" during the Indian
uprisings.
"Martin's
activity as a vigilante was not always to fill his own call but substituted for
many of his neighbors. We know this
because of Anna Maria's remarks 'that it would have been better, by far, that
he should do more for himself and let others perform their own chores'. This forced her to supervise the harvests and
farm chores while Martin was away spying out the activities and plots of the
rapacious Redskin and their French captains on the northern border, which was
the Blue Mountain range, or Kittochtinny, as the
Indian called it, just ten to twelve miles north of his home on the Frontiers
of Lancaster Co., between two Indian camps of the Tulpe-we-haki
tribe and outpost of the wily Delaware.
He was a close follower of Rev. Kurta who was
quite familiar with the Delaware language.
Kurtz was a go-between for the local tribes...
..."On
the subject of Martin's vigilante activity, I have found no record, other than
that a man in some service, secret or otherwise, was exempt of tax and
therefore not recorded. This points up the fact that his service was most
confidential and not recorded in the Archives, other than what these tax lists
disclose.
"Martin
Heffelfinger was also a pack horseman and teamster
and aided Martin Houser, who was married to Elsbeth Heffelfinger, a niece of Martin's. Houser was a Swiss from Diegten
Amt Varnsburg, and was engaged in the freighting
business and hired as one of Washington's chief wagoneers. My Grandfather oft related of them packing
trains of horses and taking them to Valley Forge, 50 miles east of here, where
they left their train and walked back, I remarked, 'Why walk back, why not ride
one of the pack horses back home', his answer was Gen. Washington had great
need of every horse available, some for mounts and some for food. ...Also he was very close to Washington who
visited the area several time openly and often secretly, according to my
elders. ...".

Federal Census and matching the location, first names of family members and
their ages.
The
1850 and later censuses provides names of household members. These are listed as provided by the census
documents.

(newspaper not known):

DeKalb Pioneer Had Lived An Eventful
Life
Butler,
Ind., March 6 - The death of Martin Heffelfinger, occuring a few days ago, has signaled universal
sorrow. A pioneer of DeKalb
county, and a veteran of the civil war, he had a large following of friends who
share in the sad bereavement. The life
of the deceased was indeed an eventful one.
He
was born in Lexington, OH Morrow county, August 22,
1836 and departed this life February 3, 1912, age 75 years 6 months 10
days. In 1860 he came to DeKalb county and in July 1861 was
united in marriage to Miss Ellen Imhoff. To this union six children were born, three
sons and three daughters. The wife and
one son have preceded him to the spirit world.
In July 1861 he enlisted in Company K, 44th veteran volunteer regiment
serving three years, receiving his honorable discharge at Chattanooga, Tenn.,
November 22, 1864. Some of the battles
he participated in were Fort Donalson, Shiloh,
Corinth and Chickamauga. He was wounded
in the battle of Chickamauga.
On
December 17, 1890 he was married to Mae Minnie Winbaugh,
of Fort Wayne, and lived on his farm, four and one-half miles southwest of
Butler, until about twelve years ago, when they moved in Butler where they
resided until the time of his death. One
child was born to this union, a little son...A faithful member of the Lutheran church
of Butler, and an active member of the Meade post G.A.R. About four and one-half years ago he was
stricken with paralysis and since that time has been a great sufferer. But his sunny disposition and ability to
always look upon the bright side of life endeared him to his friends, and they
are legions.
It
can be honestly said of him, he was a faithful soldier ,
a kind and loving husband, an indulgent father and a true friend.
Fort
Wayne friends and relatives of Mr. Heffelfinger, who
attended the funeral are: Mr. and Mrs. John Wimbaugh, Charles Wimbaugh, Dr.
and Mrs. Pierce, Mrs. A. M. McCaffery, Mr. and Mrs.
William McCaffery, Mr. and Mrs. George Thompson and
daughter Millie and Miss Jennifer Wimbaugh."
This
obituary appears from another newspaper (newspaper and date not known):
"Martin
V. Ceffelfinger
Martin
V. Heffelfinger, of Co. K, 4 Regt Ind. Inf. Vols.
died at his home in Butler at an early hour Sunday morning. He had been in a critical state for over two
years, a result of paralysis with complications of diseases contracted in
service. He enlisted in the service of
his country in September 1861, and was mustered into the Union service, Nov.22,
1861, and served three full years. When
the regiment was organized which included the assembly of a martial band he was
chosen as ...drummer. In this capacity
he served at the battle of Ft. Donelson, Feb...and 16, 1862, and in the engagement a cannon ball went through the head of his
drum. He was somewhat excited over the
event and was somewhat .........on his drum.
About
the time of the battle of Shilo April 6-7, 1862, the
martial bands were counted impracticable and Comrad Heffelfinger thereafter carried a musket and met with
several narrow escapes from death. In
one battel rebel bullet struck the top of a small
brass inkstand he carried in his water pocket denting the top in and doubtless
diverting the ball from passing through his body.
At
another time a bullet went through his canteen, letting the water out which was
a serious loss in time of battle. In
another engagement while grasping his musket a rebel bullet cut off the index
finger of his right hand. In all these
hair breadth escapes he maintained his usual equipose
and was always cheerful and by his jovial nature often drove care and
discouragements away from thos who ...dispositions.
Towering
over the ordinary soldier, being considerably over six feet in height he would
frequently throw his arm around a comrade and lift him up with a hearty hug,
restoring him to jolly good cheer. He
often helped a weaker comrade to carry his burden and no sacrifice was too
great when he could give help and assistance, either in sharing the burden of
dividing the rations with others. For
the larger part of three years he was a tent and mesmate
with the writer and being six years his senior all of us looked up to
"Comrade Mart," as we called him and he was ever ready to help in the
time of need.
Like
millions of others, he gave some of his best years to his country's service and
it may truthfully be said of him "he did what he could." He has been since the war a noble citizen and
an earnest christian. He was 76 years of age and was twice married.
He
leaves to mourn their loss hid wife and five children, Charles, Bert, Mrs. Aletha Stansberg, Mary Maggines, and Mrs. J. Obendorf. He came to DeKalb county before the war and followed farming until health
failed and for several years he has lived in Butler.
He
was, while able, a regular attendant at the reunions of his regiment and was
always filled with good cheer for his comrades, who all held him in
esteem. The funeral took place at 2
o'clock yesterday at his church in Butler.
Wm. Ettinger and family of this place, and
comrades Phil Plum, F.C. Waterman, and F.W. Willis, also Lieut. Eugene Aldrich,
of Pleasant Lake, and Capt. M.S. Willis, of Auburn, the last three comrades
having served in the same company, attended the funeral. "

"As
to Martin III, my (Henry [Heffelfinger's])
Great-great grandfather and brother to Philip, I have little knowledge as
yet. His wife's name was, also, Anna
Maria. Her last name I am not aware of; however , I do know that he was a stage driver and many of
his experiences related by my grandfather.
One was that he drove a stage coach with hollowed axles where the
bullion or patrons' money was hid when on questionable runs or routes. His home was in a rough and ready frontier
town, noted for its showdown fights and bullies, early as one of the Tulpehocken towns, known as Wohleberstown,
now Mt. Aetna, Tulpehocken Township, Berks County, formerly Lancaster County.
This was a town of the frontier beset by murderers, thieves and what
have you. Martin seems to have been very
formidable with his black snake, a treacherous whip lash, carried more for protection
than for persuasion of his team. Also,
it was claimed that he could remove horseflies from the back of the lead team,
in a double span, without touching the hide of the animal. It seems the bullies and roughnecks had a
very healthy respect for it, at least enough to beware. I have no further data on him as yet."
