I. Dale R. RUSSELL [Parents]

b. 15 Feb 1927

Ogden, Weber, UT

d. 25 Nov 1998

Everett, Snohomish, WA

  • son of George Barber RUSSELL and Ida May RAWSON

Notes: First spouse was Marilyn WHITING, of which their three children were produced. Had a fondness for jazz. BA degree in Mathematics and the Arts, received medical training in the Navy, later in life preferred animal injuries to human. For example, he once made a wee cast (successfully, no less) on a neighborhood squirrel that had broken it's leg. The squirrel and its descendants visited his home for years afterward.

Notes: George was a (Democrat) State Legislator for the state of Utah for three terms and spouse of Ida May RAWSON. He enjoyed creating particularly large paintings of wilderness and such, but was known to "hide" the elusive figures of sidhe/brownies/piskies in them as well. see one of George's still life paintings hereLoved to tell my mother stories from the old world (ie Scotland) about bogles and such.

IV. Adam RUSSELL [Parents]

b. 6 May 1848

Clackmannan, Scotland

d. 13 May 1926

Taber, Alberta, Canada

  • son of John RUSSELL and Helen BLACKWOOD.

  • children: see a family pic hereJohn Henry, Austin Gould, Jesse Lewis, Sally May, Heber Smith, George Barber, Rachael Viola, David, William Francis, Warren Adam, Hannah Ellen, Princess Viola (adopted).

Notes: He and his father were Scots coal miners. Adam had a thick Scots brogue and loved telling jokes about Scotsmen, but rather resented others doing so. He, Hannah and their children are listed in the 1901 Alberta, Canada censussee census pic here. Adam and Hannah adopted a little girl named Princess Viola Jacoby probably around 1918. She was born on June 2, 1905 in Lamerton, Alberta, Canada and had, according to the family, lost her parents in the influenza epidemic of 1918 (coincidentally, Rachel Viola had also died during the epidemic, which may be how Princess' middle name came about). Thanks to the wonders of the internet, I seem to have stumbled upon a relative of some sort to Princess here - Paine family data, whom has a record of her marrying a man named Heber Allen Birch. They had two children, however, one died at the age of six.

IVa. Hannah Maria CHILD [Parents]

b. 20 Aug 1848

Payson, UT

d. 5 May 1944

Taber, Alberta, Canada

  • daughter of Warren Gould CHILD and Hannah Austin WILDER.

Notes: Hannah (spouse of Adam) and family see another family pic herewere sent by the LDS church to settle land lots in Sterling and Taber (both in Canada, which was then rough country). A distinct lack of trained medical professionals in any locale closeby, she ended up being midwife to many folk. She was Welsh-Jewish as far as descent goes, and her mother gave birth to her in a wagon bed.

Va. Nancy Ette SOUTHWICK [Parents]

b. 18 Jan 1877

Lehi, UT

d. 9 Nov 1962

Salt Lake City, UT

  • daughter of James Nephi SOUTHWICK and Marietta (Mary Etta) NORTON.

Notes: Spouse of William John RAWSON.

Notes: The various anecdotes told in the family book Roots and Wings written by Nancy's daughter Ida May Rawson, paint an oddly complex picture of life growing up and particularly Nancy's reactions to the world around her.

From Roots and Wings; chapter 14, (pgs. 255 - 165):

"...Dad had his Bishop's desk in the living room. When he had people to see him, Mother would keep us in the kitchen. She would read to us or sometimes sing very low to us. One song was called, "The Bird in the Gilded Cage". It was about a girl marrying an old man because he had a lot of money. We loved that song. It was so sad..."

"...It was the Christmas before Elverie was born. Mother hadn't been able to make us Christmas dresses. I was certainly worried. But Christmas morning we had new boughten (sic) dresses, the first ones we had ever had. Grandma had brought us green tams with a red star on the top and a green tassel. Dean had one too. They stayed quite awhile. I know it was so nice for Mother to have them there. Elverie was born January 30, 1904. When she was three days old, Aunt Liza Orton was sitting visiting with Mother. Elvie choked -- Aunt Liza picked her up and tried to stop her from choking, then she laid her down on the bed and said to Mother, 'She is dead.' Mother sat up and picked her up and in a minute or two had her breathing..."

"...I always, when I think of these days, wonder how Mother ever managed to do all the things she did. Myrtle was a delicate child. She had convulsions once in a while. When she was about two, Dr. Causey told Mother to keep her outdoors as much as she could. He told her to send her outdoors without mittens on and if she got cold she would come in..."

VIII. John RUSSELL

b. 23 Aug 1809

Tulliallan, Fife, Scotland

d. 29 Jul 1881

Ogden, Weber, UT

m. 25 Jul 1834

Perth, Scotland

  • children: Catherine, James Blackwood, John, William, Adam, David Blackwood, Joseph Smith, Ellen, Elizabeth, Walter, Francis Love, Jeanette (Janet).

Notes: Spouse of Helen BLACKWOOD. There is a family mystery regarding the true parentage of John Russell (listed occasionally as "Russel" in the few parochial references I could find for him via Scotlandspeople [see research links]). The LDS site lists a William Russell and a Katherine (or Catharine) Russell as his parents, but they also list a possibility of a William Russell and a Mary Imry. Considering that either 1) John was never registered in the parochial records in Clackmannan (Adam Russell, he and Helen's son, probably wasn't, though he certainly existed) or 2) it isn't uploaded into a database yet, it remains a mystery. There were William Russell/Mary Imry and William Russell/Katharine Russell marriages, but without John's birth record, it's hard to say what is true.

VIIIa. Helen BLACKWOOD [Parents]

b. 12 Jul 1814

Clackmannan, Scotland

christened: 28 Jul 1814

christened at parish of Clackmannan, Scotland

d. 17 Oct 1889

Riverdale, UT

  • daughter of James BLACKWOOD and Elizabeth PRIDE.

Notes: There are many sources (LDS archive submissions, even her bloody headstone!) which incorrectly state Helen's name as being "Ellen". Having taken the time to contact, order and currently have in my possession a legitimate copy of her birth parochial records, I can state with all certainty that the name she was born with was Helen, without a doubt. Occasional records often curiously state the birthdate off as well, but (again) I received the record copy from the General Registrar Office of Scotland itself.click here to see cropped scan of her birth record.

(Transcripted record reads: "Blackwood 28 July James Blackwood Miner [Janeha?] and Elizabeth Pride had a lawful daughter B. Helen m. present [m standing for "midwife"] b[unintelligible followed by a long line]".)

The mysterious circumstance regarding Helen's name is a curious one, indeed. According to the Russell (and others on George Barber/Ida May's line) family book Roots and Wings, George had Helen's tombstone changed to Ellen because that's what he believed it to be in truth, though even he questioned which was her name *really*. It's all speculation at this point in time, of course, but perhaps the arrival in America heralded a "new start" she felt she needed - perhaps she went by Ellen here, thus causing confusion. I know that around that time period in Scotland a woman was convicted of murder (along with her accomplices)...a woman with the name of Helen Blackwood. (see a pdf file of a broadside lamentation poem someone published at the time regarding the murder here)So perhaps she wanted to distance herself from the woman's infamy along with entry into The New World. Or perhaps they were related somehow (Scotland = not that bloody large. And there is not an abundance of people named Blackwood, either). Again, speculation. Unless we feel inclined to dig through for parochial records of every sibling, cousin, aunt and uncle of Helen, it will remain just so. Besides. A little enigmatic flair can be interesting.

Anyways. Helen's cause of death is listed as "old age" according to the Utah State History Burials Database (see research links page) and she is buried in the Ogden City Cemetery under her alias of Ellen B. Russell.

IX. Warren Gould CHILD [Parents]

b. 21 Feb 1835

Hammond, South Lawrence, NY

d. 17 Apr 1906

Ogden, Weber, UT (buried in Ogden City Cemetery, D-1-9-1E - cause of death listed as "Apoplexy")

m. 6 Jan 1853

Ogden, Weber, UT

  • son of Alfred Bosworth CHILD and Polly BARBER.

  • children: Austin Wilder, Warren Gould Jr., Hannah Maria, Rachel Theresa, Henry, Heber Thomas, Julia, Nellie, Jesse Alexander, Zilpha Aurilla.

Notes: Polygamist. Spouse of Hannah Austin Wilder and three other wives, resulting in a mind-boggling twenty-four children, ten of which were by Hannah. (Other wives = 2nd - Martha Jane Elmer, 3rd - Jerusha Jane Bybee, 4th - Eleanor Caroline Pitt Hawkins [a widow of which no children were produced between them].)

Warren Gould Child and family came to Utah in 1852. He was one of the first merchants in Ogden City. He writes in his journal on, evidently, being jailed and fined for bigamy:

"February 28, 1886 -

'Having just returned from the pen, I will report. My present freedom is a dream totally wrapped in mystery to me for what purpose mine is an exceptional case to that of all my bretheren (sic) that have been tried before the courts on a similar charge is certainly past my comprehension. I am now convinced that it is no dream, but have escaped with only a fine of three hundred dollars and pretended cost of $92.10 which was paid and I discharged.'"

Yeah, he doesn't sound too happy a camper about that. On September 18th, 1887, Warren had entered into contract with the city of Ogden to build a reservoir for the city water works. He was to assist in putting in a blast to "allow the man that held the drill to assist in loading". In putting in the hold in a large rock, the drill stuck a seam and made a crooked hole. The hold was cleaned and they placed about three inches of powder known as excelsior powder in before putting in the fuse. An explosion occurred in the process of tamping the fuse. The full fuse of the blast and tamping stick went off in his face. His outer clothing was torn from his body as he was blown about twenty feet backwards. Shards of up to six tons of rock was blown into fragments under him. His left hand was literally blown to pieces. Above the wrist, his right hand was nearly as bad. His teeth were torn out, his right eye and chin were laid bare in different places to the bone. They did not expect Warren to live so his wounds were not dressed properly for five days. Dr. Benedict of Salt Lake was called in and when he arrived, he told Warren that both hands would have to be amputated. Warren protested and allegedly replied that when his hands both went, he was going with them. The doctor amputated the left hand and two fingers from the right hand. He wore an artificial eye, an artificial hand and dentures to replace those which were blown off. After a year he could write legibly again with what remained with his right hand and could see dimly with the aid of strong glasses. He seemed in better spirits after that year, if his journal excerpts are any indication.

IXa. Hannah Austin WILDER [Parents]

b. 11 May 1835

Elba, Genessee, NY

d. 29 May 1892

Riverdale, Weber, UT (buried in Ogden City Cemetery, D-1-9-2E - cause of death listed as "Pneumonia")

  • daughter of Austin WILDER and Sally Maria BARBER.

Notes: At the age of 14, Hannah taught school in Elba. At around age 17 or 18, she and her widowed mother (Hannah's father Austin Wilder had died of cholera when her mother was pregnant with her) traveled with the LDS Saints to Utah. Arrived Oct. 2, 1852.

From the journal excerpts chronicled in familial genealogical book Roots and Wings, Warren Gould's journal (pgs.231-236):

"April 29, 1892

After nine days' confinement with pneumonia, my dear and faithful wife Hannah Austin died at 20 minutes to 12 on the night of the 29th. Her departure was hardly visable (sic) to those surrounding her bedside; it was so peaceful as in sleep...On the 11th following she would have been 57 years old. She left nine children - five sons and four daughters - and over forty grandchildren...She had quite a large temple work record for the dead which was all done or provided for. The most of it had been done and stands recorded in her own hand for the benefit of her posterity. While she did not want to die, few were better prepared to go to the Father."
