m. abt 1787

Notes: According to his Revolutionary War record, David Sr. Norton was born in 1763. On the Norton Family Website they state the following for him:
"David Norton aged 17 was 5 foot 4 and 1/2 inches tall. He had dark hair, Blue eyes and a Fair completion. He had a scar on the left side of his jaw. His occupation was given as a "Planter" from Virginia, Fluvana County. He was born in Virginia, Fluvana County and was a substitute for a man in Amherst County. He entered the service on the 18th of May 1780 and served 1 Year and 6 months. David's brothers all served in the Revolution. His oldest brother, Thomas was captured at Charleston Harbor and died on a British prison hulk there. Another brother, James was an orderly sargent in George Washington's honor guard. It seems David's older brothers were Minute Men and joined the Virginia Line from the start of the Revolution. However James and David both joined when they turned 17. It is known that James and John Norton were at the battle of Yorktown and its almost certain David was also since he serve until Novermber of 1782."
The Norton family was well connected with colonial Virginia and lived about 12 miles down river from Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and Charlottesville.
David's father was born in England about 1718 and was a former British Naval officer who resigned his commission after 40 years at sea. He originally settled in Norfolk, Virginia about 1751, but seems to have relocated soon thereafter. Family tradition says his name is John, but from land records in Fluvanna we find his name was probably Christopher. David's mother was named Mary and lived to be 104 dying in Bourbon, Kentucky about 1822.
We get a little more information about Christopher Norton from one of his great grandchildren , Eliza Benefiel Trimble. We call it the "Pirate Story". Eliza was 90 when she wrote this in 1906. She was 14 when Christopher Norton's wife, Mary died and probably heard the story directly from her.
"John Norton was born in England in the time of trouble with sea pirates. He went to sea at the age of twelve and was 40 years on the sea. There was one noted pirate that did such havoc to the merchant vessels that England fitted out a vessel expressly to capture him. My grandfather Norton was on the English vessel that followed the pirate five years and finally came on it in a heavy fog in speaking distance. When spoken to they hoisted a black flag. The pirates had two vessels - one very small and tams - the idea was with the English that they would cripple the small vessel first. They shot into it and it sank like a lump of lead. They then attacked the other vessel and had a hard fight with them - finally overpowered them and took them to England. But most all the treasure was on the little vessel. Grandfather said that the money that was on the big vessel was divided among the men and there was a hatful to each man. All treasure was on the little vessel."
The family also called Christopher Norton "The Commodore" and from two other family sources we know he was a British officer on a warship. It was common for officers to begin their career at the age of 12 as Midshipmen. But they may also end 40 years of service as a Midshipman if advancement opportunities don't come along so we don't know what rank he might have held.
The Nortons were deeply involved in the Revolutionary War. However, this came to bitter ends when the family lost their fortunes that were tied up in this war in 1780.
The family moved around a few times before Sophia's parents died, the estate handled and appraised by David. This probably helped fund their move to Kentucky. In 1798, upon the apparent death of Sophia, David indentured his oldest daughter Mary (about aged 10 at the time) to Jas. Fulton to learn "House wifery" back in Bourbon County. His son, David Jr. put the name of Melissa Orsevi on a family group sheet he prepared, perhaps as a second wife of David.
He, over a lifetime, accumulated over 2000 acres which he appears to have sold small parcels of perhaps when times were hard. It is said that he died in 1814 in Kentucky, probably due to a spotted fever epidemic that was widespread in the area during that time. There is no clear estate sale record or death record of David any longer, besides ancestral sheets stating that he is buried in Lexington around this time. The land that David had worked and developed for years reverted to the owner and David's family found themselves without David and a homestead.
David's Family at his death:
Mary Norton - probably married - no info
Polly Norton - probably married - no info
Samuel Norton - married Nancy Jones in Bourbon, KY, 1808
Henry Norton - married Betsy Ann Wright in Pendleton, 1812. He was 22 at David's death and married only 2 years.
David Norton Jr. - 18 years old.
Rachel Norton - 16 years old.
Sally Norton - 14 years old, married Jacob Ashcraft in Pendleton 1817. This family all stayed in Grant county.
John N. Norton - about 12 years old.
Hiram Norton - 11 years old, married Lydia Ashcraft in Pendleton 1833. Hiram purchased land just north of David Sr. and lived in Grant county his whole life.
On the Norton family site, they have done extensive DNA testing to help establish lines and points of Recent Ethnic Origins (REO) testing. The REO results could be quite surprising: England, Scotland, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Netherlands, faint traces of early Romania, and faint traces of Poland and Russia.

Notes: It is said that Mary is the granddaughter of a Native American woman alternately called "Joscorum Scoenonti Running Deer" and "The Dark Lady". Her grandfather is listed as being "Charles Sqawman", which is a derogatory term for an anglo-saxon person that married and bred with a Native American. The mystery is ongoing and the records of Natives around that time scarce. This does ring of some truth, however, as there are family written records which relate in letters and notations that Mary was taken to visit where her grandmother's people were settled and was given gifts in early childhood. Her father is listed as Francis Lewis, her mother called "Jane" in Anglo records.
