THE HISTORY of PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY VIRGINIA CHAPTER IX EARLY CHURCHES IN PITTSYLVANIA THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND
The Separate Baptists believed in the immediate working of the spirit of God, and taught that to those who earnestly sought God gave "evident tokens of his will." They spoke with deep feeling and strong gestures, and being deeply affected themselves, Semple says, "correspondent affections were felt by their pious hearers which were frequently expressed by tears, treblings, screams, shouts and acclamations. * * * And the people were greatly astonished, never having seen things in this wise." The earnestness of their exhortations won hosts of converts in Pittsylvania for the new faith.
After several churches had been established Elder Shubal Stearns "conceiveds that an association composed of delegates from all these would have a tendency to impart stability and uniformity to the whole." Accordingly the first association was held in January 1760 at Stearn's church in North Carolina, the Sandy River Meeting House, to which eight churches sent delegates, two of which were in Virginia, the Dan River Church, represented by Samuel Harris and the Lunenburg County Church, represented by William Murphy. William Murphy was born in 1732 in Virginia. Or he was born in Northern Ireland.2,3,1 He was the son of William Murphy and Mary Fouquoy. William Murphy married Margaret Hodge in Halifax County, Virginia.2,3 William was a Baptist Minister in 1763 in Staunton, Staunton, Virginia.4 After 1765, William Murphy married Sarah Barton, daughter of Joshua Barton and Jane Dubart, in Virginia.3 William Murphy died in 1799 in Surry County, North Carolina.2,3

William Preston Murphy was born in 1831 in Kentucky.1,2,3 He was the son of John Ecles Murphy and Frances Mary Wright "Franky" Doughty.
William Preston Murphy, Elizabeth Francis Murphy, Henderson Warren Murphy, James Thompson Murphy, Preston Holcombe Murphy, Nancy Angeline Murphy, Mary A. Murphy, Sarah Ann Murphy and Nancy Murphy were listed as a household member living with John Ecles Murphy on the 1850 Census in District 26, Warren, Illinois.3 William was an early member of Monmouth Church, but in 1867 he was the clerk for the Salem Church. Came to Oregon in 1852 wagon train.

Liberty
Before 1900, Liberty was a separate community south of Salem. C. F. Swander lists the church as reporting their presence first in 1882, but he did not know where the town was located. Key residents of Liberty were William Preston and Sarah Stanton Murphy. William was the farmer son of John Ecles and Frances Murphy, among the founders of Monmouth and its college. The younger Murphy's home was at Liberty and Skyline Roads and their several "fruit farms" were nearby. Since William "Pat" Murphy was the clerk of the Salem Church in 1867, we speculate they decided to start a church closer to home when they began farming here - hence the church reporting from Liberty in 1882.
We find it nothing short of incredible that the present Liberty Christian Church, established a few decades ago, is at the same location today.2 On 13 December 1855, William Preston Murphy married Sarah J Taylor in Polk County, Oregon.2,4 On 27 September 1866, William Preston Murphy married Sarah E. Stanton Stover, daughter of Alfred Stanton and Phoebe (Unknown Name).2 William Preston Murphy died on 11 March 1904 in Marion County, Oregon, Certificate # 152 & 774.
