A Courageous Lady Of the 20th Century,
Annie Rosabell Hendrix Merritt
17 Jan 1898 - 7 Oct 1980

Annie was the fifth child born to the marriage of Absolm I. and Mary A. (Mollie) Merritt Hendrix. After growing into a very beautiful young Lady Annie Married James Marion (Jim) Merritt on 25 March 1920. Jim was the son of William Henry (Bill) and Syvel D. Merritt and was Born on 25 February 1888 in Covington County Alabama. The marriage of Annie to Jim brought forth three children who were Orbie Lee, Myrtice Adaline and Robert Julius. The Family was a farm family and lived near the present day Brooks Tower And near the family of Cap Edson who was married to the Savannah Hendrix, a sister to Annie. During August of 1931, the two families became involved is a dispute over the fact that the cow of the Edson family was over running the corn field of the Merritt family. During one of the cow's rampage into the corn field, it was shot with small shot from a shotgun by either Jim or Annie. This triggered the tempers even more, and caused Cap Edson to threaten the life of Jim Merritt in a public place. On August 11 1931 as Jim Merritt and Andrew J. Terry were walking to the Merritt home and past the Edson home when they were approached by Mr. Edson and his Son (Hubert) and another argument ensued during this time Mr. Edson drew a pocket knife and struck Jim in the upper left chest region and on the arm. Jim Merritt then walked for another forty to fifty yards and then sat down. Andrew J. Terry then left and ran to find help for Merritt. When Mr. Terry returned with help they found that Merritt had died from his wounds. Cap Edson was found guilty of murder and sent to prison for fourteen years during which time he died. Annie H. Merritt continued to live in the Brooks community and worked as a field hand or at any honest work that she could find. This life went on for Annie for about ten years and until she remarried, (Red) John Washington Merritt (a first cousin to Jim) who was the son of James G. and Lucenda S. Merritt. This Marriage produced two more sons for Annie. They were Temp Murphy and Wallace Lamar (Buddy) Merritt. During the time that Annie was married to (Red) John Merritt he developed skin cancer on the face and suffered a very long time from this condition, before it caused his death. After the death of Red John, Annie continued to work and raise her family without the help of a male figure, All of the children were raised and started families of their own. On 7-October- 1980 Aunt Annie Rosabell Hendrix Merritt Died in Georgianna, Alabama and was buried between her two beloved husbands in Antioch Cemetery near Brooks, Alabama. And to the North of her her son Temp Murphy who was killed in an automobile accident. a few yards to the west of her head her Daughter Myrtice Adaline is buried who also died of cancer.
