All surnames and counties at the Rootsweb use the same process for subscribing & unsubscribing. For a list of all the RootsWeb lists click here. (thousands of surnames, states, counties, countries, and other subject matter concerning genealogy.) Just replace my surname with your surname and you can subscribe to a surname list. For Countries, Ship lists, etc., these have specific names that can be abbreviated. These you would need to lookup before subscribing.

To SUBSCRIBE in MAIL MODE (L) (individual e-mail msgs.) Send your message with an empty subject line containing the single word, subscribe and no other text in the message window to: ARMARION-L-request@rootsweb.com
To SUBSCRIBE in DIGEST MODE (D) (messages bundled together with a "subject" index.) Send your message with an empty subject line containing the single word, subscribe and no other text in the message window to: This mode is fantastic if you are using Netscape Mail. It is cumbersome using IE's Outlook or Outlook Express. ARMARION-D-request@rootsweb.com
It should look like this using JEFFERSON as an example:
To POSTa message to the list, drop the "-request" and only use the "-L". This will post to both MAIL MODE and DIGEST MODE. This is the address you need to enter in your address book. ARMARION-D-request.rootsweb.com ARMARION-L@rootsweb.com (this is the posting address) Make sure you are in "plain text" mode before
sending messages or queries to the list. It should look like this using ARMARION-L as the example:
To UNSUBSCRIBE: send the command unsubscribe to the list you subscribed to: ARMARION-L-request@rootsweb.com
(if in mail mode) IMPORTANT NOTE: You should UNSUBSCRIBE when you go on vacation or cannnot download your E-mail. To CHANGE from one mode to another,
you should unsubscribe from one then re-subscribe to the other.
