Anthony Clemente needs some help on his Pangburn line   He writes –

Thomas Pangborn, born 31 Jan 1840 Bethel, New York died 7 June 1909 Lake County, Michigan, married at Hadley, Michigan 13 Jan 1869   Mary M Blackmer   She was born 26 Jan 1840 at Castleton, VT, died 15 Oct 1919 Lake County, Mich

Children

      William J  --  born 10 Apr 1872 Johnburg, VT – died 4 July 1944 Flint, MichMarried (1st) 21 June 1898 to Mary E Ballard (b Jan 1872 – d 29 Dec 1949, Traverse City, Mich) Married (2nd) between 1910 – 1917  Melinda J (Linda J) –George “Georgie”

Mary E “Mamie” – born Nov 1878 Flushing, Mich – died 4 Apr 1949 Luther, Mich –Married (1st) Flint, Mich 29 June 1897 Herbert B Clother --  he was born 29 June 1871 Flint, Mich –died 3 Nov 1906 at Flint, Mich Married (2nd) 11 Aug 1913 Benjamin J Smith --  he was born 1860 Indiana

Thomas Pangborn enlisted in the 6th Michigan, Co H, Heavy Artillery at Sandstone, Jackson Co, Mich  He was 25 years of age and enlisted under the name Thomas Wheaton   In his original application for invalid pension he states:  “The reason I enlisted  under the name of Wheaton is that I was living with my grandfather Wheaton at the time I enlisted and he said that was the name – so I put it down”

Thomas Wheaton enlisted 9 July 1864  He also claimed to be a Veteran Volunteer in his original enlistment papers  On the 1890 Soldier Census he claims service of 1 year 1 month with the 6th Michigan and 3 years Company F, 76th New York  A check with the National Archives shows no record of a Thomas Wheaton or a Thomas Pangborn in the 76th New York as a veteran or otherwise

After a 40 hour search of the Lake County Clerk’s records, Thomas Pangborn’s death record was found filed at THOMAS WHITE PONYBORN and his parents listed as William PANGBURN and Lydia WHEATON   The handwriting on this record is very flowing and could have been copied in error when the

Page 2

death records were indexed in the 1930’s  Tony asks,

Can anyone help with the parents of Thomas?  Are his parents names on his death certificate correct?

Editors note:   In response to Tony's request, we submitted the following material to him

1 Herkimer County Deeds – 1840 --  William Pangburn bought land

(There is a Bethel in Herkimer County and a Bethel in Sullivan County)

2 Civil War Record  --  Thomas  Wheaton --  shows he was Company H, 1st Michigan Vol  Heavy Art  He enlisted Jan 5, 1864 and was discharged Aug 20, 1865

(The above Civil War Records are from Manuscript of Viola Pangburn Roberts)

3 From prior Pangburn Letters

Vol 2, No 2, pg 9:

William H. Pangburn and Elizabeth Wheaton get married in

Schenectady on  14, March 1832

John J Pangburn and Maria Wheaton get married in Schenectady on 18 Apr 1832

Same issue – pg 4 – Russell Whitcher records:

Burial of Mary Elizabeth Wheaton Pangburn, wife of George Edward Pangburn

The rest of the material we gave to Tony was just a lot of “supposins”

And here is he  answer- - - -

Did find three interesting points &ldots; Herkimer County Deeds William Pangburn buys land 1840  Thomas Pangborn born January 1840 --  Hmmm!

Until your letter I had always assumed that Thomas was born at Bethel, Sullivan County  But then I was never knew there was a Bethel, Herkimer County  I had gleaned the other info from the past Pangburn Letters so had already supposed Thomas possible parents as William H and Elizabeth (Lydia?) Wheaton  The date also fits, 10 mos from marriage to Thomas birth??

As for the Civil War Records it appears Viola’s dates have been taken from the 1890 Soldier & Sailors Census and application for pensions   I have all of Thomas’s papers about 100 sheets from the National Archives

The info that I gave was from enlistment, discharge, etc, and not from memory as would have been the case with census info or pension applications  I'm sure that once the gave the dates a couple of times he then remembered them the same for the rest of his life.  Okay now how about ‘spossin’ this one

“Pangburn, Samuel S  -- age 24 (??) years  Enlisted December 6, 1861 at Owego, to serve three years, mustered in as Private, Co F December 17, 1861:  Deserted prior to April 1863”   (From State of New York Adj  General’s Report 1901 Serial #20, 76th Infantry)

Don’t know, Tony!!  But we have a lot of researchers out there willing to help   Let’s hear from you people  Is Samuel S  Pangburn who deserted prior to Apr 1863 really Thomas Pangborn who enlisted in July 1864 under the name of Wheaton??  Who has information on the children of William H and Elizabeth Wheaton Pangburn?????

And here is some additional material Tony sent to help others   (From State of New York Adj  General’s Report )76th Infantry

PANGBURN, Charles H  ---  Age, 34, Enlisted August 5, 1863, at Rochester, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co F, August 24, 1863;  transferred to Co I, July 1, 1864; captured in action, Oct 1, 1864 near Pegram House, Va;   died, December 4, 1864, in hospital, Salisbury, NC, a prisoner of war 176th Infantry

PANGBORN, Samuel --  Age, 43 years  Enlisted, November 7, 1862, at Nelson, to serve nine months: mustered in as private, Co F, December 18, 1862;  mustered out with company, November 16, at New York City

PANGBURN, Francis S --  Age 15 years  Enlisted December 3, 1862, at Nelson, to serve nine months; mustered in as private, Co F  December 18, 1862: appointed mustered, no date: mustered out with company, November 16, 1863, at New York City; also borne as Francis L

Tony also included an obituary of another one of the famous or infamous Pangborns  He writes:---

Edwin Pangborn would have been my first cousin twice removed  My mother remembers him as a soft spoken young man even though he was completely bed-ridden  Edwin was written up in Robert Ripley’s “Believe It Or Not” book,  first edition published sometime between 1938 and 1942  He toured with some of the smaller circuses but family tradition states he also toured with P T Barnum’s Circus  I have a photo postcard of Edwin taken at Davenport, Iowa   Edwin was born 31 January 1899 in Flint, MI

-- Died 2 February 1940 in Flint, MI

From the “Flint Journal” --- Issue 4 February 1940

DEATH FINALLY CLAIMS FLINTS ‘Ossified’ MAN WHO REFUSED TO DIE

The man who refused to die is dead

Edwin Pangborn 39, of 729 Allen Street, who 24 years ago was given “no chance to live” by physicians following a pair of accidents which resulted in a stiffening of joints which allowed him to move not so much as a finger, died Saturday at the home of his parents after a week’s illness with pneumonia

It was 24 years ago, when Edwin was 15, that the chain of unfortunate incidents began   He was thrown from a sleigh and received a broken hip

A short time later while pushing himself along a sidewalk in a wheel chair, a drunken man drove a team of horses over him  Several bones were broken and physicians said he could not live   He recovered but inflamatory rheumatism and complications set in which

Page  3

Resulted in all the joints of his body “freezing” to such an extent that the bones would break before the joints would bend.

He was forced to take nourishment through a tube, and soon his afflictions were multiplied by blindness  It was then that Edwin decided to make his affliction his fortune  He joined a carnival and exhibited himself as a curiosity

All went well until his manager, in August 1929, stole nearly all the money he had saved.  She convicted in Circuit Court of the theft in 1929  It also was revealed that Edwin’s little sister, June, was to be deprived of furthering her education as a result of the theft

Edwin chartered a truck and began visiting county fairs, exhibiting himself as  “the ossified man” in an attempt to raise money   Fate struck another blow at this point when the truck overturned while making a jump from Tecumseh to Middletown, Ohio   Both of his legs were broken in the accident and his head lacerated severely   June was hurt slightly also    It was at this time Edwin wrote to his mother “The ossified man refuses to die!”

He recovered from his injuries and once again took to the carnival circuit to make a living    For the last 10 years he made the carnival route in the summer and lived on his state aid for the blind during the winter

In the meantime, June, the little sister has grown to womanhood, married, and is the mother of five boys   She married Walter Wilson in 1931   The family resides at 741 Allen Street

Pangborn is survived by his parents, Mar and Mrs William J  Pangborn; three sisters, Alethia Pangborn and Mrs Wilson of Flint, and Mrs Marilla Ford, of Battle Creek, and three brothers, Walter, Robert and Richard, all of Flint . Funeral services are scheduled Tuesday at 7:30 pm at the Richardson Funeral Home with Rev B F Cady, of the Flint Gospel Assembly, officiating    Burial will be in Luther, Mich

And we have another new researcher seeking information on her Pangburn line   Eileen Swanson is trying to locate:

MELISSA JANE PANGBURN – born March 8, 1871 or June ?? 1873;  died May 17 1953  She married HARRY LEE WHITE, born May ?? 1870

Eileen is searching for ANY information on this family – place of marriage, children, date of death on Harry White, burial site, or ??? She states that Harry Lee White’s father FLOYD EBENEZER WHITE  and my great grandfather JAMES NEWTON WHITE  were brothers.  Anyone working on the White line???

     * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Shirley Wainright has submitted some additional information on her line (See Vol 1, No 1, page 6, 7)  She writes:

Theodore Pangborn, son Alzina and Hiram, was born in Toronto, Canada on Oct 18, 1833 (some later documents say 1834)  He married Emma Elizabeth McClanahan on Jan 10, 1866 at Keosauqua, Van Buren Co, Iowa    Emma was born July 12, 1844   Theodore  died May 13, 1925 and Emma Died Jan 4, 1932  Their Children were:

        Ellie b Oct 22, 1872

        Dora  b May 30, 1875

        Charles  b. June 24, 1879

During the war,  Theodore was sent to help round up stray government horses that had stampeded   His hors fell with him injuring his leg One of his buddys said he was “One of those tuff Canadians rugged as a bear”

Albert Pangborn’s claimants were his parents, Alzina and Hiram   He was 21 when he joined the army where he got the measles which turned in pneumonia   He was discharged and died at home shortly after or on Dec 20, 1862  The father Hiram was born about 1806

I was hoping the records would mention Hiram’s first marriage (to my ancestor), but it didn’t   (2) Alzina says that she married Hiram on Sept 30, 1837   Hiram says that it was on Sept 27, 1837   in New York state by a magistrate   when Hiram was 86 he said he married her in an outlying precinct 15 miles east of Buffalo   On another record he said it was near Niagara Falls   They said that they had a certificate in a family bible that had been lost (I wish I had family bible!)

Ages of Hiram and Alzina’s children in 1862 were:

       Hiram --          57

       William --       31

       Albert --          18  (I think he was 21)

       Clarissa --       10

       Louisa --          6

       Matilda --        4  (or Morgeuany?)

Some older children of Hiram are not listed and I think these two older boy were children of the first wife

One of the most important things this told us, -- Hiram was in Blue Hill, Mitchell Co, Kansas in 1880   He was listed in the census and it showed he was born in Canada, his father was born in Connecticut and his mother was born in Holland

Okay researchers, -- Shirley needs your help  WHO WERE THE PARENTS OF HIRAM PANGBORN???

Somewhere, in some hidden corner, there is a record of a marriage of??? Born in Conn and ??? born in Holland!!!!  How about you Canadian researchers, -- will you give Shirley some help??

ANCESTRY:  A will of one Jeremiah Pangburn, wife, Elizabeth, is to be found in the offices of the Sec of State, Trenton, NJ in which is mentioned the names of his sons,  Lewis, William and Jeremiah  It appears that Jeremiah Pangburn of the War of 1812  was the son of Jeremiah whose will is mentioned here   In 1839 , the writer of this paper visited the family of a later Jeremiah Pangburn living in Verona, NJ at which time statements were made that seem to identify the four Jeremiahs

Editor’s Note:  Too bad Viola didn’t record those “statements” so we would all know the background of the Jeremiahs!!!

FROM THE “PHILADELPHIA BULLETIN”

It was high noon in July in a little picture-book Algerian village on the south shore of the Mediterranean Naval officers there were about to go to mess  Suddenly a young Army paratrooper rode up, dismounted and asked to see the commanding officer

“We’ve jumped into the hills, several miles away,” he said  “Some are injured  One of my buddies is hurt very badly, sir, and needs medical aid"”

The commanding officer nodded to Lieutenant Commander Edward W Pangburn, 48 of 4136 Decatur St, Philadelphia surgeon and trustee of Bucknell University, now home on leave   1943

Commander Pangburn question the young paratrooper, learned that the terrain over which he had ridden was too rough for motor transport   He learned also that this young paratrooper had commandeered his horse from an Arab

A ROUGH TRIP

“Perhaps”, suggested the paratrooper, “  we could go by boat   He’s in a stone house, near a cove, I-I think I could find it from the sea, sir” Within a few minutes, the Navy disclosed her today (Sept 18, 1943) Commander Pangburn and a chief pharmacist’s mate directed by the paratrooper were in a landing barge, headed for the cove. The day was rough, Spindrift splashed in their faces   Cove after cove, hill after fill went by  All looked alike, but the paratrooper was certain he could identify the place .By midafternoon the paratrooper pointed to the cove and the landing barge headed toward the stone house  But the shore was so rocky the coxswain said he didn’t dare try to go nearer that 300 yards of the shore .So finally, the commander, chief pharmacist’s mate and the paratrooper decided to swim  The paratrooper and the chief pharmacist’s mate stripped  Commander Pangburn kept on his shoes so he would not injure his feet on the rocky shore

SAVED FROM DROWNING

He clenched the handle of his 12- pound Navy medical case in his teeth and jumped overboard with the others .

They tried to keep together, but rough seas carried the pharmacist’s mate away  Finally the paratrooper became exhausted, sank beneath the waves .Commander Pangburn dived twice  The second time he came up with the paratrooper  His own strength ebbing, Dr Pangburn tried to kick off his shoes, but he couldn’t .When the physician and the paratrooper finally were virtually washed to shore, they found the pharmacist’s mate, prostrate on the beach  For half an hour or so the three men lay there while strength flowed back into them

The, assisted by other paratroopers, they went into the house, on the floor of which, covered with an army blanket, lay the injured man He had a leg injury and a bruised side, but more serious, a strangulated hernia

EMERGENCY OPERATION

Commander Pangburn saw he was in terrible pain, but when he asked the trooper how he felt, the boy said, “I’m feeling better now  But I had a lot of pain”

To the surgeon’s practiced eye the soldier’s reply suggested that the circulation had been cut off, that possible gangrene was setting in There was not time to wait, so then and there while the pharmacist’s mate and the injured paratroopers pals assisted  Commander Pangburn performed an emergency operation without even a local anesthetic

The patient responded well,  but needed hospitalization and a secondary operation  so the paratroopers ripped a door from the house and made it a stretcher  Then they borrowed a burrow from an Arab, strapped the stretcher on it and started up the winding mountain trails Six miles farther on they ran into a convoy of Army trucks and transferred their patient to one  He was removed to a hospital and since has recovered fully

SWIM BACK TO BARGE

Commander Pangburn and the chief pharmacist’s mate rested while, then noting the sea had calmed, swam the 300 yards back to the landing barge

They got back to their station to late for evening chow, more then seven hours after they had received the call for help

Shortly after Dr Pangburn returned to his station he was seized with pains in the abdomen and chest – the strain of the day had caught up with him

The Navy sent him to a hospital in Moroco for treatment and then to one in this country where he remained for a month before coming home on leave   He is prone to minimize the Navy’s account of the incident, but admits that, although he enjoys swimming, he never had such a cold wet swim in his life

Dr Pangburn, who has one (child) in the Army & one in the Navy is on the staffs of Nazareth, Northeaster & Frankford Hospitals”

Dr Pangburn is descended from Stephen Pangburn and Rebecca Imley of Monmouth Co and Middlesex Co, NJ
