And here is a little bit of history submitted by Jacque Knight on her line (see Pangburn Letter Vol 111, No. 1, pgs. -3 & 4)

Taken from the "History of Jackson County, Iowa"

Brother Jason Pangborn came from northeastern New York . Sister Pangborn, a refined, excellent Christian, was per perfectly blind, became so before leaving the eastern home. When he (Baptist minister)  called on the fiamily they were living, in small cabin located at the extreme northeast corner of the quarter  section on which the Miland Depot is now located, and very near  where the house now stands in which Brother and Sister Pangborn died. In that little cabin without the first comfort or convenience, with herself, husband, and four small children to care for, the good woman with no word of complaint was with, extended hands, feeling her tollsome way in total darkness ,caring for loved ones.

Several years afterwards we attended the funeral of her little boy . She had never seen his face. At the close of the services she wished to be led to the unclosed coffin. She stood for a few minutes tenderly, and lovingly, with the tears last her sightless eyes passing her hands over. the cold face of dear little one, say ing I have never seer, my dear  child's face I must get an impression of how he looked The dear mother has gone where she can see

Lorene Dodd found this article in a little booklet at he Wenatchee Library. It was taken from the 1918 Wenatchee High School Class reunion; Wenatchee, Washington

Pangborn, Doris Slabaugh

None of Doris's family seem to reside in the area. Her sister Alta was for many years a supervisor at the Deaconness Hospital. After graduation, Doris worked for Howard Thomas, Jeweler, a long time business in Wenatchee. Mr. Thomas sent much of his watch repair to a Percy Pangborn, watch repairman in Seattle. Eventually this work for Mr. Thomas increased to a point where Mr. Pangborn was persuaded to come to Wenatchee to carry on watch repair. Here he met Doris and they were married. When Mr. Thomas became an optometrist he sold the jewelry business to Percy Pangborn and he and Doris continued in their business until he retired.

Sometime along the way the Pangborns bought the Tall Timber Ranch (now a Presbyterian Summer Camp) near where the Napeque River joins the White River. Here one day they found a baby hummingbird which had fallen from its nest Their successful rearing of the tiny bird made them and their experience with hummingbirds a feature in National Geographic. Their interest in these tiny birds led them to install feeders for them around the old log house and in nearby trees. This was soon noticed by passersby and the place became somewhat famous. But alas, uncaring and careless people also came, trampling the fields, shooting chipmunks and squirrels, completely ignoring their hosts (and the Pangborns were most gracious hosts). Request to use care, not to shoot little creatures and not to allow dogs and children to run wildly rampant over property and rights of others were ignored

Eventually the Pangborns sold their beloved home amoungst the hummingbirds and left the valley, eventually taking up residence in Seattle. Here Doris died at about the time the idea of a reunion was born. "Pane' planned to attend the reunion (his letter indicated he had promised Doris he would come) but a day or two before the class of 1918 dinner, word was received from Panes niece that he was hospitalized by a stroke. No address was given. Although a card was signed by all who attended the dinner, no further word has been received and there is no apparent address to write to.

Lorene Dodd informs us that Percy Pangborn was Clyde (Upside Down) Pangborn's brother. (See Pangburn Letter Vol Il No. 1, page 1.) Thanks, Lorene. for this information

Bruce Ackerman writes: "I visited the Union Reformed Church in Unionville, town of New Scotland, Albany County, N.Y. The minister was kind enough to let me go through the church records, so I thought I'd send along the Pangburn references I found. The church was formed in 1828. Unionville is a very tiny hamlet west of Albany, between Delmar and Clarksville."

Thanks, Bruce for all of this information. And a special thank you for locating the primary source material and documenting what you submitted Bruce hopes this material will prove valuable to others - and he asks a question, "Who was the Lydia that married Isaac Van Natta?"

Here's one answer, from the records of Viola Pangburn Roberts, used by permission of the Newberry Library, Chicago, Illinois:

Mary Mulligan Konik is interested in finding records of her Pangburn connection.

Frederick Exceen married Mary E Panghourn. He died 26 March 1890 and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Thompson Twp., Geauga Co., Ohio. Mary E. Pangbourn died 9 February 1888 and is buried in the same cemetery. Frederick's sister, Jerusha Exceen married Lorenzo Odell in Geauga County. Her birthplace (1850 census) was Canada West.

Mary Konik needs your help to get information on Mary E. Pangbourn Exceen, her ancestors or her descendents. She also needs help on Jerusha Exceen Odell b. ca.1833 in Canada West and lived in Mesapotania, Ohio in 1850 with her husband Lorenzo Odell, blacksmith, and her brother Abram, also a blacksmith,

And here is some information Mary Konik sent to help others.

From the "History of Ashtabula County, Ohio":

'Eliza Prentice, the first wife of George Pangbourn died soon after coming to Harpersfield, and her grave was the first one made for a pioneer woman. . .

Obit from "The Geauga Republican Record" - 21 April 1926: Oldest Geauga Soldier Passes

Abram Exceen, who died Tuesday, April 13, at the home of his son, I.,N. Exceen, in Chardon, was born in Volney, near Lake Champlain, N. Y., Oct 21, 18 3 2. He was the oldest of the 16 children of Frederick Exceen and Mary Pangbourn Exceen.

Their home was near the Canadian border, and wolves, bear, deer and Indians were numerous. His father served with Major Andre when Benedict Arnold" sold them out " to the British, but escaped by hiding a boat and commanding the captain to take them across the Niagara River or be shot. The boat was full of soldiers.

Soon after, the family moved to Ohio and settled in Claridon. When 12 years old Abram went to live with John Knapp and his second wife who treated him as their own. He learned the carpenter trade and lived there three years. On Oct. 11, 1862, he married Eliza Maria Roath.

In 186 1, Mr. Exceen enlisted as a soldier in Co. A, 29th O.V.l. Later he came near dying with measles, and was honorably discharged. A year later he re-enlisted in Co. C, 177th O.V.I. His regiment fought its way to Richmond while Sherman marched to the sea. The late Geo. Patterson was his chum. He saw Lee surrender his sword to Grant and helped stack the Confederate arms. He was honorably discharged at Greensboro, N.C. June 21, 1865.

Mr. Exceen helped haul stone for the railroad bridge in Painesville, and other bridges in Thompson, Madison and Geneva. Mrs. Exceen died Sept. 1, 1896, and July 14, 1904, he went to the Sandusky Soldiers' Home, remaining there until November 7,1922, when he returned here, where he died at the ripe age of 93 years, 5 months and 23 days. He will be remembered as a generous- hearted man who was kind to all.

Of his seven children, two survive: Isaac N. Exceen of Chardon and Hanson Exceen of Thompson. A daughter, Mrs. Delia Bowhall of Upland, PA died Saturday April l7th. He also leaves two younger brothers, John Exceen, aged 83, of East Trumbull and Guy Exceen, aged 73, mayor of Lawton, Mich. and former sheriff.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon, April 15th, at I o'clock from the late home of the deceased, and attended by relatives, friends and members of G.A. R. Rev. C. A. Coakwell officiated, and preached an appropriate sermon. Burial was made the same day in the family lot in Thompson Cemetery.

From the "History of Ashtabula County, Ohio":

Eliza Prentice, the first wife of George Pangbourn died soon after coming to Harpersfield. and her grave was the first one made for a pioneer woman  . . ."

Obit from "The Geauga Republican- Record" - 21 April 1926: Oldest Geauga Soldier Passes

Abram Exceen, who died Tuesday, April 13, at the home of his son, I.,N. Exceen, in Chardon, was born in Volney, near Lake Champlain, N.Y., Oct. 21, 1832. He was the oldest of the 16 children of Frederick Exceen and Mary Pangbourn Exceen.

Their home was near the Canadian border, and wolves, bear, deer and Indians were numerous. His father served with Major Andre when Benedict Arnold " sold them out" to the British, but escaped by hiding a boat and commanding the captain to take them across the Niagara River or be shot The boat was full of soldiers.

Soon after, the family moved to Ohio and settled in Claridon. When 12 years old Abram went to live with John Knapp and his second wife who treated him as their own. He learned the carpenter trade and lived there three years. On Oct 11, 1862, he married Eliza Maria Roath

In 1861, Mr. Exceen enlisted as a soldier in Co. A, 29th O.V.I. Later he came near dying with measles, and was honorably discharged. A year later he re-enlisted in Co. C, 177th O.V.I. His regiment fought its way to Richmond while Sherman marched to the sea. The late Geo. Patterson was his chum .

1, 1896, and July 14, 1904, he went to the Sandusky Soldiers' Home, remaining there until November 7, 1922, when he returned here, where he died at the ripe age of 93 years, 5 months and 23 days.

R. Rev. C.A. Coakwell officiated, and preached an appropriate sermon. Burial was made the same day in the family lot in Thompson Cemetery.

Time to close up the newsletter for this month. Had a very enjoyable vacation in October. Traveled to Illinois where we met Brad and Eve Entler and discussed our Pangburn genealogy over dinner. Next stop was Wisconsin where we met Alice Zens and spent many enjoyable hours with her. Always nice to meet our fellow researchers!

We've seeked and searched both near and far To find out where those Pangburn's are, They flit, they fly, they just don't stay, Maybe we'll find them all some day!
