What? The last of the Soldiers' Orphan Schools to be built by the State of Pennsylvania was the Scotland School in 1895. It is located in Scotland, Greene Township, Franklin County, just a bit north of Chambersburg. Today it is known as The Scotland School for Veterans' Children, and is run under Pennsylvania's State Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs. You can learn more about it here. Please also see the Soldiers' Orphan School Project here. Using extracted census data we compiled an "in residence" list, arranged the pupils' names alphabetically and included their ages. Names are spelled as they appear, but there likely were transcription errors. (For instance, the letter n seems to have been sometimes misread as u.) Why? Sometimes ancestors' young children "go missing" from one census to the next, and don't turn up as boarders or helpers on a neigboring farm, or an adult just ups and disappears. Census transcriptions of institutions can be useful finding tools in cases like these, but they can't help if they don't exist. And that is why we compiled this list, and posted it here.
