The earliest generations of my Rizer
family are found in
West Virginia and Maryland.
They are found in the Northern Neck of Virginia, in Berkeley County and the counties formed from Berkeley County; these being Morgan, Mineral, and Hampshire counties.
In 1788 half the family moved northward to Allegany Co., Maryland. A few families left Allegany Co. and moved east to Washington and Frederick Counties, Maryland. These are all western Maryland counties.
Major lines in the Northern Neck of Virginia were :
Matthias Rizer who was located in Morgan Co. after it was created from Berkeley County. The name of Matthias’ first wife is not known. He married 2) Mary Michael, and 3) Mary Stotler. His children included:
George Rizer married to Sarah Hinkle
Anna, called Nancy, Rizer married to Daniel Ambrose
Racheal Rizer married to Casper Miller (I am actively working on this line, but could certainly use some help.)
Mary Rizer married to Jacob Widmeyer (Recently three weeks of work were devoted to developing this line. It is almost complete.)
Major line in Maryland, in Allegany County were:
Martin Rizer married to Mary Magdalena. (This Martin is reference in the records as Martin Rizer senior.) He was the son of our earliest known Martin Rizer.
His children included:
Martin Rizer married to Rosanna Gephart and Mary Saylor. (This
Martin is reference in the records as Martin Rizer junior.)
John Rizer (who had children Martin, Henry, Mary Ann, Bostick, and George Rizer.)
Peter Rizer married to Catherine (this line is a problem, and we need help!)
Mary Rizer married to Peter Garey
George Rizer married a Margaret. This George died between 1827 and 1840. Margaret is in the 1860 Allegany co. census.
A cousin to the above family was
Martin Rizer ‘of M.’ married to Catherine
Baumwert. This Martin was the son of Matthias Rizer of West Virginia.
My own line of George Rizer married to Margaret Hoffman. George and Margaret’s children included:
George Hoffman Rizer married to 1) Elizabeth Wright, 2) Mary S. Pettingall, and 3) Caroline Keifer.
Albert Augustus Rizer married to Lydia Jeffries Springer (line of Kathleen Rizer)
Elizabeth Ann Rizer married to David Elliot
Mary Jane Rizer married to Seth Shinn
