Turner Family of Christian County Kentucky

Sugar Creek Road in Christian County where most of the Turners lived

The earliest known Patriarch of this Turner Family is Robert Turner who was born February 22, 1766 in Lynchburg, Amherst County, Virginia. Researchers have stated that he is the son of Robert Turner, Sr. (b. abt. 1740) and Mary McGlaughlin (b. abt. 1745) who were married in Pennsylvania on September 06, 1762, but I do not have any documentation to verify this. In the marriage records of Campbell County, Virginia there is a Robert Turner that signed for surety of Nancy Turner to Samual Drinkwater on August 16, 1788 and Elizabeth Turner to Emanuel Drinkwater on November 10, 1791. These may have been sisters of our Elder Robert Turner. There are also land records of Robert Turner in Campbell County, Virginia.

Robert Turner (1766-1846) married Elizabeth Atwell (1771-aft. 1850), daughter of John Atwell who signed as surety on for Elizabeth when she married Robert in Prince Edward County, Virginia on September 02, 1791.

Our Robert, who was born in 1766, was living in Christian County by 1812 as there are deeds in his name. The Turners moved to the Bainbridge area of Christian County and had farms on Sugar Creek Road. There are two Turner Cemeteries on Sugar Creek Road.  The Robert Turner cemetery is some distance off the North side of the road and difficult to locate. The other is on the south side of the road and is easy to locate.  The south cemetery is made up of Joseph, one of Robert's sons, and his descendants.

At least one of Robert's children, George W. Turner, stayed in Lynchburg, VA as he was named in the settlement of his fathers estate. Jerome Bonepart Turner was the only one known to head West for Texas. He was a Doctor and settled in the Azle area of Parker County, Texas. Two daughters, Cynthia and Lucy both married Moore's and moved to Jefferson County, Alabama.

Earl Turner who lives in Florida, has been an invaluable asset when it comes to my Turner's. He provided me with research material done by Carol Poteet, who has now since passed away, that documented how all of the Turner's of Christian County are related. And also provided me with the burial location of the Elder Robert, which was a brick wall 20 years in the making.  The Turner's are found to have been in Trigg County, Christian County, McCracken County and Ballard County.
