JAMES CALDWELL was born in 1793 in KY, the youngest son of William Caldwell. He was probably born in Bath County.
He came to Missouri in his early 20s if not before.
There is a James Caldwell marriage record in the St. Louis City Hall (Mg. Bk A, p. 20)
registered 1 July 1818. The wife's name was Polly (Jaexpers?). The records were written by Frenchmen at that time.
This does not look like Pepper but it may be an error because of communication difficulties. (My notes state that the
marriage was performed by Jesse Hale, Elder of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Perhaps a search of early Methodist
records would shed some light. (J Mc)
By family tradition, James's wife is Mary (Polly) Pepper. She
was born in 1800 in KY (parents b. in VA). She lived to be 104;
passed away in 1904. She was a most remarkable woman. She reared
a family of 11 and then served as midwife for her children and
grandchildren. She was on her way to deliver a great grandchild
when her horse slipped on the ice and fell. She broke her hip and
did not recover.
The next record is the 1830 census of Gasconade County where
a James Caldwell is shown in his 20s. Even though his age doesn't quite
fit, the family is composed of 6 boys and one girl. This checks
with other censuses and their dates fit. This same census shows
a Nancy Caldwell b. 1780s with two boys b. 1820-5 and two b.
1815-20 and one b. 1810-15. It appears her husband died about 1825.
Her husband was a Mathew Caldwell who came from N.C. (See Matthew Caldwells in Franklin Co. Records.
On April 4, 1830 James Caldwell was appointed trustee of the
first school district of Gasconade Co. (History of Gasconade
Co. by Goodespeed, p. 697). He was replaced in October.
In 1840 James Caldwell is listed in the Miller Co. census. His
is the only Caldwell family listed. He is shown with seven sons
and one daughter. [Note: Camden Co. was formed from Miller and
Cole and they were formed from Gasconade].
By the 1850 census, only two sons are still remaining at home.
Most of the others are married and living in Camden, Miller, and
Pulaski Counties. The Camden and Pulaski county courthouses were
destroyed in 1900 & 1901 so the only records of this family are
those that exist in Miller Co. and the abstract offices. The
abstract offices show that the land where James lived was near
the Elm Grove church. That cemetery was visited but no markers
were remaining on the graves.
The Civil War period was very difficult for those living in
Missouri. Most of James and Polly's children moved out of the
county at that time. Peter is found in Arkansas and Amos's family in Callaway County, but many
have not yet been located.
The 1880 Camden Co. Census shows Mary living in the home of
James Arnold,Sr. with his wife, Mary Ann. Mary is listed as age
79, born in KY and both her parents born in Virginia.
