William is probably the grandson of Hugh McClung, immigrant, who died in Greene County,
TN in 1789 but proof has not been established. He married Eleanor Cowan who was born in
Knox County, TN. William died before his sons were grown. Elenaor moved the family to
Pulaski County, KY along with the Wilsons and Chitwoods.
There is a will 1811 of David Cowan, Sevier County TN which names Eleanor and
her husband William McClung as heirs. This could mean that Eleanor Cowan (not McCowan)
McClung was a sister of Sarah Cowan Chitwood, wife of Pleasant Chitwood who was next door
in the 1820 Pulaski County KY Fed census. There is a land deed in
Washington County VA from David Cowan and his wife Jane prior to their
settling in Washington County VA. The date would possibly mean that
William McClung also came from Washington County VA. (Pat Francis)
The Cowan's came from Washington County Virginia in 1786 to Sevier Co. as evidenced by a
deed. It is believed that David Cowan built a two story log house in Boyd's Creek area in
1798 and the Cowans were some of the earliest settlers in the area.
Pat states: I suspect that Eleanor and William McClung also had daughters and there may be
one living near her (in 1820) such as the James Pritchett next door to her since all
in that area have some family connection.
Pleasant Chitwood was in the 1810 Pulaski County, KY census but the McClungs were not. The
part of Pulaski County was the area that "fell into Tennessee, Campbell County" when the
border was resurveyed. That area eventually became Scott County Tennessee. Evidently the
McClung men (Charles & Hugh) married their wives shortly after the 1820 census and were in
Monroe County, Indiana in the late 1820's when Hugh McClung took up land.
Son of William and Eleanor McClung. He married Nancy Chitwood, daughter of Pleasant
Chitwood.
Charles was listed as born in 1802 and Nancy Chitwood born in 1803. The Pleasant Chitwood
Bible shows they
were married Nov. 18 1824.
Charles died in 1834 and his estate was probated in Monroe County. After Charles McClung died in 1834 in Monroe County, his wife Nancy
Chitwood McClung eventually returned to the same area as where her
parents Pleasant Chitwoods lived. She eventually married Jacob Caylor
who had been appointed administrator of Charles' estate in Monroe County
along with Nancy. He was also appointed guardian of her two boys but he
was never appointed guardian of her daughter Sarah McClung. Hugh
McClung was appointed guardian of Sarah McClung and Charles estate file
contains a copy of Hugh's final settlement with her on her fathers
estate after she married Andrew Elswick in 1843. Nancy Chitwood McClung
married Jacob Caylor in Whitley County Kentucky and I have found
evidence that is where they lived and died and had more children.
Whitley County was originally part of Pulaski County KY.
Sarah married Andrew Elswick, eventually migrated to Kansas and died in Oklahoma at the home of one of her daughters. She is buried by her husband in Perry, Kansas.
We do know from the Cowan Will that Charles and Hugh had a sister, Jane
David Cowan wrote his will in 1811. Jane McClung, daughter of Eleanor is the
only grandchild named in the will. Also her Mother Eleanor inherited"
all the household furniture she has in her possession". From this I
might guess that William and Eleanor McClung were living with David
Cowan and caring for him. The only personal item Sally Chitwood
inherited was a looking glass. On Cowan's death, all the land was to
be sold and money divided equally among his children. By 1811, I know
that Sarah and Pleasant Chitwood were already living in the area
enumerated by the Pulaski census of 1810. So the McClungs could have
moved to the same area between David Cowan's death and 1820. During
that time William McClung must have also died as he is not alive by
1820. Jane McClung and her spouse may have also been in the same area
and Eleanor may have remained with her when the boys left for Indiana.
However--I don't know who Jane married or if she survived to be an
adult. There is a Pruitt family between the Chitwoods and Eleanor
McClung in 1820 but I've not had any luck finding anything on this Pruitt.
Son of William and Eleanor McClung. Married Nancy Wilson. Deed records show that Hugh had
moved to Monroe Co., IN by 1828. He was not in
the 1830 census of Monroe County but Charles was. Possibly Hugh's name
was dropped in the recopying of the census at some time.
Hugh was one of the administrators of Charles's estate and was the guardian of Charles
daughter Sarah. (To establish family connection).
Departed his life, on the 13th day of August last, our beloved Brother Hugh McClung, in the
48th year of his age. He had just sold out his premises near Unionville, and moved to Lucas
County, Iowa, where he was taken sick and died without buying land, or in any way settling
his family in that State, and they have since returned to Unionville in this County.
Brother McClung moved to Young's Ridge, near Unionville, some 22 years ago, where he has
resided ever since, until within a short time of his death.
Some eight years ago he joined the Baptist church, of which he lived an acceptable member,
up to the winter of 1848 and 1849 when he, in company with a number of others, withdrew from
that body, and on New Years' day, 1849, united with a few other choice spirits, who were
constituted a church of God, upon the Bible alone. And from that day to the time of his
departure, he lived a very pious and devoted life.
Brother McClung was a charming singer. Often have we seen the congregation warmed into deep
devotion and tears by the sweet melody of his flowing voice. He was a kind neighbor, an
affectionate husband and father, and an amiable citizen. But he has left the earthly
sanctuary, leaving behind him a kind and affectionate wife, and a large circle of children,
brethren friends and acquaintances, to mourn their loss. But the church feels his loss most
keenly. His voice is no more heard in the earthly sanctuary as it was wont, in singing the
songs of Zion, but he now sings in the paradise of God, free from pain sickness and death.
May his good example be the means of leading his children to the obedience of faith, that so
we may all meet in heaven where there is no death.
Hugh McClung b. 1858 in IN, father b. IN and Mother from KY: They are in Vernon County,
Missouri wife Francis may be a second wife, b. 1854 in IN. They had Retta McClung, dau.
b. 1874 in MO.
The Hugh in Vernon County, Mo. is the son of William McClung and Minerva J. Bates McClung.
That William is the 2nd son of Hugh and Nancy Wilson McClung of Monroe County. The Hugh of
Vernon County eventually came on to Kansas and was Treva Matlock's ancestor if you remember
back when she was a member of the Assoc. She is deceased now and her daughter has her files
but doesn't have time to do much with them. Minerva married John Hendrickson after William
died and her son Hugh married John Hendrickson's daughter Francis. William's Hugh and our
ancestor--John Wilson's son Hugh lived neighbors therefore William's Hugh was called "Big
Hugh" to distinguish them.
Hugh McClung Descendant: She is from Monroe County, is a descendant of Hugh
McClung through his daughter Elizabeth Young and goes to church where
Hugh and Nancy Wilson McClung donated land for the church.
Her name is Darlene Easton and her address is [email protected].
Greene County, TN Tax ListsThis lists Hugh, James, and John McClung.
This William is probably a son or more likely, a grandson of Hugh who died in Greene County,
TN. Pat Francis has worked for years on this problem. She writes: I tried to sort out
the Hugh's in Greene County Tennessee and did find proof that the two land grants were not
the same Hugh as the will of the Hugh of the Alabama line. The land described in the two
land grants #136 Greene County and #739 Hawkins County actually lies in the current county
of Hamilton. These grants were issued to the Hugh McClung of Lancaster County PA. Book A,
p. 184 Hamilton County gives an indenture from Hugh McClung of Lancaster County PA to Hugh
Lawson McClung for 800 acres in Hamilton County on the North side of the Tennessee River
being the same tract granted to Hugh McClung by North Carolina. This indenture is witnessed
by Charles and Margaret McClung and registered in Hamilton County. August 10, 1829. There
were 59 indentures and entries for Charles McClung of Knox County, TN in Book A, Vol 1
Hamilton County 1796-1831. There is an indenture between Matthew McClung and Hugh McClung
executors of Charles McClung Sr., deceased of Knox County Tn July 1836 and William Clift
and Robert C. McReeHamilton County. Bk C p. 51-53 July 28, 1836. The #739 Grant was
registered in Knox Co. TN Book B, p. 170 Dec. 5, 1796 and re reg in Hamilton County 13 July
1822. This grant was also surveyed for Hugh McClung of Lancaster County PA. There is no
record of any McClungs living in Hamilton County, TN. Hugh and Charles McClung were land
promoters.
Hugh was one of the administrators of Charles's estate and was the guardian of Charles
daughter Sarah. Sarah married Andrew Elswick, eventually migrated to Kansas and died in
Oklahoma at the home of one of her daughters. She is buried by her husband in Perry, Kansas.
I have an email of a copy of a copy of a letter Sarah wrote to one of her son's telling him
who his grandparents and great grandparents were. She says that Charles (her father) was the
son of William McClung and Nellie McCowan. She states that Nellie McCowan was born in Knox
County in Tenn. Sarah states her mother's name was Nancy Chitwood and her father's name
was Pleasant Chitwood.
The 1820 census of Pulaski County, KY has --in a row--William Wilson (possibly the father
of Nancy Wilson who married our Hugh) , Joshua Stevens, Moses Stevens, Danl Chitwood, Shadr.
Chitwood, Eleanor McClung (with two sons of the ages of Charles and Hugh), James Pritchett,
Pleasant Chitwood (father of Nancy Chitwood who married Charles). This part of Pulaski
County KY was the border conflict with Tennessee and eventually ended up in Scott County
Tennessee. Obviously William McClung was deceased by 1820 census. Several of the area
families from this census ended up in Monroe County Indiana and several returned to the
area including Sarah's Mother Nancy Chitwood McClung who eventually married the other man
who was an administrator of her husband Charles' estate and had more children.
