"The bible, as inscribed on the front free endpaper, was presented to him by the Orange County Bible Society on Sunday, January 4th, 1863, at Bradner Camp, two miles from Fredericksburg, Va. -three weeks after that disastrous battle. It was most assuredly carried by him through the ensuing battles at Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, and Gettysburg. It was at Gettysburg on July 2nd, where he received the wound that would eventually cause him to transfer from the 124th (in order to fulfill his term of enlistment with light duty) to the Veteran Reserve Corps. Hazen's discharge document, dated September 4th, 1865, states that he was born in Warwick..., is twenty five years of age, five feet three inches high, dark complexion, black eyes, brown hair, and by occupation when enrolled, a teacher."
