The first, or last, HICKMAN in our family, depending on your point of view, is Elizabeth HICKMAN who was born in 1869 in Bledington, Gloucestershire. Her father was Thomas HICKAN who worked on the railways and the family appears to have moved quite frequently before settling in Claydon in North Oxfordshire about 1873.
Most of Elizabeth's ancestors were born and died in Oxfordshire and most were agricultural labourers or general labourers, living in small villages and working the land. As the 19th century progressed the various trades that were followed by the men began to broaden, but the majority still made their living from manual labour: farm carters, coalmen, gardeners, brick layers and railway labourers.
Tracing the family line back, I have found many other surnames that have married into our family: some are direct ancestors (after all it takes two!) and some marry other members of the family.
