Curtis Cemetery
AKA Prigmore Cemetery
Curtis Cemetery is located on Gum Road just west of Dyno's main office
at the curve. Take HH higway to County Rd. 170. Take 170 North to
Gum Rd. Take Gum Rd. West through the curve. The cemetery is on the
East side of the road. There is an access road into the cemetery.
It is well-kept and there are recent burials here. I went out
January 6th and 7th of 2001. There was still snow on the ground so I
had to go back out on January 16, 2001. I began working in the SouthWest
corner where the stones are in no sort of row.

W.H. ALLEN
1870 - 1944
Joplin News Herald 27 Nov. 1944
The body of William Henry Allen, 74 years old, of Duenweg, a veteran employe at the Atlas powder
plant, was found by searchers at 11:30 o'clock Sunday morning in a shallow mine pond
about half a mile northeast of Duenweg, following a search that begun late Saturday
afternoon when he disappeared.
Investigators said the elderly man had drowned. They believe he had wandered away from his home,
waded waist-deep into the pond and fell from exhaustion and exposure. He had been in ill health
recently and also was worried about his wife, who is ill in a nursing home in Carthage.
Inquest Tonight.
An inquest into the death was ordered for 8 o'clock tonight at the Knell mortuary in Carthage,
where the body was taken upon being removed from the pond.
Allen and his wife lived in Duenweg many years. A son, Paul Allen of Atlas, had been staying
nights with him recently. He disappeared about 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Neighbors saw him
walking north and Mrs. Bertha Gillam, living half a mile east and half a mile north of Duemweg,
saw him walking through abandoned mine dumps in that area about 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon.
When he failed to return home Saturday night a search was begun. The son and neighbors searched
during the night. Lew Bowman and Bob Groff of Duenweg found the body Sunday morning after they
saw Allen's cane floating on the surface. The pond is only about three feet deep.
Employed 29 years.
Allen had been employed at the Atlas powder plant 29 years. At the time he disappeared he was
carrying a watch given him by the company for 25 years of service and it had stopped at
approximately 5:45 o'clock, leading those who found his body to believe he had been in the water
since that time Saturday afternoon. He was a member of the Sterling chapel Methodist church.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Oma Allen; three sons, Paul R. Allen of Carthage route 4, L.C.
Allen of Beaumont, Tex., and S.D. Allen of Giant, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Emma Lewis of
Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Charles Robinson of Detroit; a brother, E.C. Allen of Boicourt, Kan.;
11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
