CROUCH FAMILY

(166) PHILENIA5 STANCLIFT (Lemuel4, Comfort3, James2, James1)

Daughter of Lemuel and Mehitable [Goff] Stanclift born McKean, Erie County, PA Feb. 2, 1802(1), died there July 5, 1845, married 1.Erie County, PA Nov. 27, 1822 WILLIAM TAYLOR, married before 1825 2. LUDIM CROUCH born 1792, died Wesleyville, Erie County, PA Feb. 8, 1872 � 80 years(2).

Philenia's brother, David, said that Ludim was an educated man and was a very prosperous farmer. He termed his sister, an "energetic and tidy housekeeper". By 1850 Ludim had remarried a woman named Sarah by whom he had additional children named Stuart Crouch born 1847 and Helen Crouch born 1850. Ludim served in the War of 1812 in Capt John Dix's Company 8th Regiment of New York State Militia. Ludim died at Wesleyville, PA in 1872 and Sarah died at West Point, NY about 1898.(3)

The census records suggest that the farm of Ludim Crouch was located near Lemuel's homestead. In 1830 Ludim and Philenia Crouch were living near Philenia's parents and they had two young boys by this date(4). By 1840 they seemed to be living closer to the Sharpe's Corner Stanclift Community and had a large family(5)

CHILDREN: Ludim and Philenia [Stanclift] Crouch

1. CYRUS CROUCH married MAY PINNEY daughter of Elisha and Racheal [Belden] Pinney. Her sister Melissa married Reuben Stanclift and her brother Martin married Adaline Stanclift. After marriage they lived on the Pinney Farm then "lived a year or two in Minnesota. He left and went to California and she returned to Erie County, PA. He started for home and was never afterward heard from, supposed to have been waylaid by Indians."

2. DARIUS CROUCH born 1826, died Oct. 13, 1855 � 29 years, buried Stanclift Cemetery on Lemuel's farm, married MELISSA RANDALL.

3. MASON L. CROUCH born PA 1829, married ANIE DOWNAT. He was said by David to be a surveyor and to have been nominated by the Democratic Party to run for the Governor of Nebraska. He lost the election by a narrow margin, and served in the State Assembly.

4. GEORGE CROUCH born PA 1834, died Jul. 4, 1853 � 19 years, 6 months, buried Stanclift Cemetery on Lemuel's farm.

5. CYNTHIA CROUCH born PA 1836, married EDWARD KINGSBURY, went to live in Minnesota and had three daughters who were teachers.

6. MELVILLE CROUCH born Jan. 21, 1839, died Feb. 4, 1845 � 6 years, 14 days, buried Stanclift Cemetery on Lemuel's farm.

7. ALBERT CROUCH born PA 1841, married "Miss WALE or WARE, had two children and was in the Agency business in Rochester, PA"

8. LUDIM P. CROUCH born PA 1844, died Paterson, NJ Feb. 24, 1906(6) married at Girard by Rev. Yingling Mar. 6, 1877 Miss ADDIE E. RICHARDSON(7), lived at Lockport, Erie County, PA. He was listed as being of Fairview at time of death.
