(84) ELIZABETH5 STANCLIFF "Betsy" (Stanbrough P.4, James3, William2, James1)

Daughter of Stanbrough Perigrine and Sibbel [Davis] Stancliff born October 8, 1790, baptized St. John's Church, St. Johnsville, Montgomery County, NY Dec. 30, 1792 sponsored by Johannes and Cathrina Mayer(1). She died in Jackson County, OH in 1835. According to the biographies of her son Porter Duhadway(2), she must have married 1. ____ PORTER(3) and was living in that portion of Athens County, OH that later became Jackson County(4) OH, when she married 2. DANIEL DUHADWAY. Daniel Duhadway was born 1782 in Paris, France, died Jackson County, OH 1875 � 93.

Daniel's parents left France and settled in a place near Dover, Delaware in 1784. A Jacob Duhadway, either father or brother of Daniel was fined in 1804 for nonattendance at the Fifth Regiment, Third Company of Delaware Militia. Daniel Duhadway served in the War of 1812 and was a member of the South Brandywine Rangers, a Volunteer Delaware Militia Company in 1813 and 1814(5). Shortly afterwards he came first to Chillicothe, Ross County, OH then to Jackson County, OH. He appeared in several Athens County records around 1818 and must have been a resident as he served as an election official for Elk Township, Athens County,in November 1819. He was a shoemaker and a farmer. In 1830 they lived Washington Township, Jackson County, OH very near the Andrew McPheeter family(6). Andrew McPheeter was married to Mary's sister Hannah. Porter Duhadway's biography states that after Betsy died in 1835 Daniel left his children and returned to France until 1843, when he returned to Jackson County, OH. On his return he married again Ross County, OH Nov. 10, 1843 MARY [____] SMITH(7). In 1850 Mary Duhadway born 1791 in VA was living in McArthur, Vinton County, OH with daughters Mary Smith age 13 and Elizabeth Smith age 7(8). Daniel, however, along with children, Caleb and Lydia, was enumerated in 1850 in the town of Jackson, OH in the household of his elder daughter Elizabeth or "Betsy", her husband William McKinnis and their family(9).

All children below listed as heirs of Stanbrough P. Stancliff and children of Betsy Duhadway formerly Betsy Stancliff, daughter of Stanbrough Stancliff.

1. LUCINDA DUHADWAY married Jackson County, OH by J.W. Leach JP Jan. 28, 1835 ISAAC RICKEBAUGH(10).

2. ROBERT DUHADWAY married Jackson County, OH Oct. 9, 1836 HESTER MARTIN daughter of George and Jane Martin whose entire family is outlined in a Court Record as Thomas Winters made petition for partition of land(11) purchased from heirs of George Martin(12).

3. THOMAS DUHADWAY listed as deceased in 1839

4. JACOB DUHADWAY married Ross County, OH Mar. 15, 1843 HESTER KIDNEY(13).

5. ELIZABETH DUHADWAY "Betsy" married Jackson County, OH Jan. 7, 1841 WILLIAM MCKINNIS(14) and in 1850 her father and two siblings were living in her husband's household with her family.

6. PORTER DUHADWAY born Jackson County, OH April 7, 1828(15), died Jackson County, OH Nov. 9, 1880 or 1889(16), married Jackson County, OH by John Stephenson J.P. Sept. 10, 1849 MARY MORSE(17), daughter of Eli and Sarah Morse, she died Oct. 1853, he married 2. Jackson County, OH Dec. 25, 1857 by the Rev. A. Abbot, MARY A. BENNET(18). There were two children by first wife and four by the second wife.

Porter Duhadway studied Law and was admitted to the Bar in 1860. In 1873 he was elected District Court Judge(19) He served as Mayor of the Town of Jackson for three terms. During the Civil War he was on a committee that went to Pittsburgh Landing to care for wounded Jackson County men in the Army, after the Commissioners of the County, and private citizens raised over $300.00 for that purpose.(20)
