GEORGE WHITFIELD HILLIARD FAMILY

(270) JERUSHA DICKINSON6 STANCLIFF (Joseph5, James4, James3, James2, James1)

Daughter of Joseph and Electa [Tennant] Stancliff born Chatham, CT Mar. 12, 1816, died June 7, 1881, married Chatham, CT Nov. 4, 1839 GEORGE WHITFIELD HILLIARD of Chatham, CT, born CT 1811. The marriage was performed by Rev. Samuel M. Emery(1). Rev. Emery was pastor of the Trinity Episcopal Church.

George W. Hilliard was the Master of a schooner built and owned in 1845 by Erastus and Silas Brainerd(2). The schooner was probably used to transport stone from the Brownstone Quarry to Boston and New York City.

They were living 1850 in Portland, CT, they had two children, and were sharing a house with the family of Jerusha's sister Laura(3). In 1870 they were still in the Town of Portland, Middlesex County, CT, with three children(4). In 1850 George described himself as a sailor, but by 1870 he was "Master of a Vessel". There are stones in the Trinity Cemetery, Portland Middlesex County, CT for Jerusha, her husband and a G.S. Hilliard, who is probably George below, but there are no dates upon these stones.

In 1900 Jerusha's three children were all living in the same household. Leora Wilkins was the head of the household, they shared a house with Samuel Bartlett's family. Leora's husband was absent, and her two brothers lived with her. Neither George or Jerusha were present(5).
