(395) MARY ETTA7 STANCLIFF (Perry6, David B.5, Stanbrough P.4, James3, William2, James1)

Daughter of Perry and Martha Caroline [Davis] Stancliff born Wyoming, Essex Twp, Stark County,IL Jun. 16, 1864, died Sept. 17, 1905 somewhere in Iowa. Her second husband, Mathew Duffy, brought her back to Wyoming and she is buried with his family, in St. Dominic Catholic Cemetery Wyoming, Stark County, IL(1). She married 1. Wyoming, IL by Rev. D. G. Stauffer on Aug. 26, 1882, ALFRED NEELY of Peoria, Peoria County, IL(2) son of Nelson Neely born in West Virginia Dec. 13, 1860(3) or Nov. 12, 1859(4). He died in North Dakota Feb. 25, 1896 as the result of a Railroad accident. He is buried Wyoming Cemetery with two young daughters of the couple. Mary [Stancliff] Neely married 2. about 1901 MATHEW DUFFY "Matt" son of Mathew and Ellen [____] Duffy, both of whom were born in Ireland. Matt was born Wyoming, Stark County, IL June 1873(5).

In 1884 Mary and Alfred Neely moved to Peoria, Peoria County, IL where Al hoped to establish himself as a Methodist Minister, but that did not come to pass. Perry said that in 1894 they had decided to move to West Virginia, and they may have lived there. At some date they moved to Hagerstown, Washington County, MD. Alfred Neely went to work for the Great Northern Railroad, and obtained employment as a Conductor on a run between Minnesota and North Dakota. He left his family in Hagerstown, MD perhaps living with Mary's brother, Herman. Alfred planned to send for his family in the spring, but on Dec. 7, 1895 he was injured in an accident. He and his two brakemen were in a caboose on a siding at Breckenridge, Wilkin County, MN when a switching engine crashed into them destroying the caboose and injuring the men. Alfred was taken back to the Sherman House Hotel at Larimore, Grand Forks County, ND where he had been living. He seemed to be recovering from his injuries when peritonitis set in and he died suddenly. Mary's brother, Herman, traveled to North Dakota to make arrangements, and then returned to Hagerstown, MD to accompany Mary Etta and her two children back to Wyoming, IL for the funeral of Alfred Neely(6).

In 1897 Mary Neely was listed as living in Kewanee, Henry County IL when she attended her parents' 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration. In 1900 widow Mary Neeley with children Emma and Herman Lyle was living in Kewanee, IL at 206 Lyle Street, across the street from her brothers Daniel and James Stancliff and their families(7). She was working as a dress maker. Also in Kewanee Mathew Duffy was listed as a roomer in the household of Mary N. Brenton at 420 Main Street, Kewanee. His occupation was Jeweler and Engraver. Mary remained in the area until her marriage the following year to Matt Duffy and their subsequent move to Iowa.

CHILDREN: Alfred P. and Mary Etta [Stancliff] Neely

1. EVA M. NEELY born February 1884, died Apr. 17, 1888 buried Wyoming Cemetery with her father.

2. EMMA M. NEELY born July 1, 1887, died July 9, 1903 buried Wyoming Cemetery at Wyoming, Stark County, IL with her father and sister.

3. HERMAN LYLE NEELY "Lyle" born IL or WV(8) Mar. 26, 1895, died Houston, Harris County, TX Oct. 1966(9). Appeared in 1900 Census as Herman L. Neely. After death of his mother he was adopted by his Uncle and Aunt, Daniel Webster and Sarah [Standeven] Stancliff and went to live with them in Alvin, Brazoria County, Texas(10). As an adult he lived Houston, Texas and owned a Jewelry Store in partnership with his brother Dren Duffy. He was married but the name of his wife is not known.

CHILDREN: Mathew and Mary Etta [Stancliff] Neely Duffy

4. DREN DUFFY born IL Dec. 14, 1902, died Houston, Harris County, TX Aug. 1987(11). As adult he lived Houston. He was a Jeweler, and was in business with brother, Lyle Neely. After the death of Lyle Neely, Dren married his widow, she too died and he married 2. GOLDIE ____.
