JERIMIAH PROCTOR FAMILY OF BATH COUNTY, KENTUCKY

THE STANCLIFT FAMILY of BATH COUNTY, KENTUCKY

There can be little doubt that the first Stanclift settler in Montgomery County, KY was either the youngest son of William Stanclift(1) of Portland, CT or one of William's grandsons(2) and therefore belongs in the third or fourth generation. The spelling "Stanclift" was not used by the Stancliff family in England, and is unique with James1 Stanclift of East Middletown, CT and his descendants. Although some of the descendants of James1 Stanclift, adopted the spelling "Stancliff" and "Stancliffe" after the American Revolution, no case has been found where the reverse is true.

Though he may not be the first man named Stanclift to arrive in the area, the first Stanclift to appear in the records of Kentucky was Joseph C. Stanclift. According to the Kentucky Census records of 1810, 1820 and 1830 Joseph was born between 1770 and 1775. Because of his age Joseph has been placed here in the fourth generation, but may well belong in the fifth generation.

GENERATION FIVE

MARY5 STANCLIFT (Joseph4, ____3, William2, James1)

Daughter of Joseph and ____ [____] Stanclift born 1809-1810(3), married Bath County, KY JEREMIAH PROCTOR. The marriage bond was issued Dec. 13, 1828 under the name spelled as "Standcriff" and Mary's brother, James, was the bondsman(4).

They did not seem to appear as a seperate family in the 1830 Census and may account for the unidentified individuals in Joseph Stanclift's household in that year. Ten years later, in 1840, Jeremiah and Mary were enumerated in Bath County right next to Mary's brother, James(5). They were probably living and working on the Stanclift family farm. There seemed to be seven children at this date, but one male was aged 15-20 and too old to be their son. They were living in Carter County, KY by the 1850 Census(6). In 1860 they lived in Upper Tygarts, Carter County, KY which is located about 30 miles NNE of Owingsville and 25 miles from Moore's Ferry.

Mary's name did not appear on the list of those making a purchase at her brother James' estate sale in 1853. By this date the family had already moved to Carter County, KY. The 1860 census shows the oldest children Sarah and Elbert were no longer with the family. The list below reflects the conflicts between the 1850 and 1860 census records among other children in the family.

Footnotes:

1. .All of the sons of William's only brother, James Stanclift, have been accounted for.

2. .Several of the sons of William appeared in the Connecticut records at the time of birth only, and then disappeared from the records. William's son, (15) Joseph born 1739, married, had a family, and disappeared from Connecticut records before 1790. William's grandson, (43) Joseph born 1758 son of Josiah, disappeared during the Revolutionary War. William's eldest son, James, had children born between 1763 and 1769 in an area of Connecticut where births were not yet recorded, providing another possible origin for Joseph. In addition James' wife was named Mary Lewis. They are known to have had a son born in that time named Lewis, the first known occurrence of that name in the Stanclift family. All are candidates for the first man in Kentucky.
