Daughter of James 3rd and Hannah [Hills] Stanclift born East Middletown, Middlesex County, CT Apr. 1, 1750(1), baptized Apr. 8, 1750(2), died New Britain, Hartford County, CT Nov. 16, 1823(3), married Chatham, Middlesex County, CT Feb. 4, 1773 SGT. SAMUEL SHIPMAN(4) son of Captain Samuel and Sarah [Doty] Shipman of Saybrook, New London County, CT born Saybrook Sept. 3, 1750, died New Britain, Ct Mar. 12, 1826, buried Fairview Cemetery in New Britain(5).

Samuel saw service during the Revolution as a Sergeant with the Connecticut Troops. He was a Shipbuilder, and later a house builder. He also worked as a cabinet maker and joiner in that part of Berlin, Hartford County, CT that became New Britain, Hartford County, CT.

Samuel was listed as being of Berlin when he had his two youngest children baptized in 1792 in Saybrook, New London County, CT, now Old Saybrook, Middlesex County, CT. Samuel and Sarah may have been in the area visiting family at the time.

1. HANNAH SHIPMAN born Sept. 18, 1773, baptized in the First Church of Saybrook Apr. 24, 1774, died Aug. 18 1828, married Feb. 16, 1794 SAMUEL6 SOUTHWORTH (Andrew5, Andrew4, William3, Constance2, Edward1) born Haddam, Middlesex County, CT Feb. 11, 1771. They lived Chester, Middlesex County, CT until 1806 and then moved to Paris, NY.

2. LUCY SHIPMAN born Feb. 27, 1775, baptized in the First Church of Saybrook Apr. 2, 1775, died Springfield Center, Otsego County, NY July 11, 1860, never married. At the time of her death she lived in the household of her nephew Lt. Oliver Newell Shipman, son of her brother Samuel Shipman. Ironically the 1860 census was taken on July 10, 1860, the day before her death(7).

3. SAMUEL SHIPMAN born Jan. 14, 1777, died May 25, 1823, married Sept. 1, 1796 RHODA NEWELL born May 28, 1778, died Otsego County, NY Apr. 16, 1841. They lived at Otsego near Cooperstown, Otsego County, NY where Samuel was a farmer.

4. JOSEPH SHIPMAN born Dec. 23, 1779, died Mar. 10, 1859 at home of one of his children in New Hartford, Litchfield County, CT, buried at New Britain, Hartford County, CT, married July 11, 1802 MARY LEE daughter of Isaac and Abigail [Goodrich] Lee of New Britain. Joseph was apprenticed at age 16 to Stockbridge, Berkshire County, MA to learn the Brass Founder's Art. He practiced this trade and prospered. He was known for his fine brass clocks.

5. SARAH or SALLY SHIPMAN born Jan. 22, 1785, baptized in the First Church of Saybrook Nov. 11, 1792 and father specified as being of Berlin, this date, died in Michigan, married 1804 WILLIAM LEWIS of NY state.

6. CHAUNCEY SHIPMAN born Feb. 4, 1789, baptized in the First Church of Saybrook Nov. 11, 1792 and father specified as being of Berlin, Hartford County, CT this date(8), died Huntsville, Butler County, KY Mar. 3, 1873, married 1. Aug. 3, 1812 MARIA ROBERTS daughter of Merrill Roberts of Berlin, CT, married 2. SOPHIA LEE.
