ABRAHAM STANDEVEN

Son of Joseph and Ann Standeven of Milnrow, Lancashire, England(1) born Milnrow, Sept. 26, 1824, married probably in New Jersey ELIZA VAN ZILE(2) or VAN ZEA born New Jersey 1825.

Abraham was a Blacksmith by trade, but turned to farming as he moved west. He evidently immigrated to this country with several brothers, Thomas, William and Joseph Standeven, all Blacksmiths. The brothers settled by 1850, in Patterson, Passaic County, NJ(3), but all had left that area by 1860(4). The 1900 Census record(5) reveals that Abraham entered this country in 1842 and was naturalized in 1858. According to his daughter Esther's death certificate, she was born in Bloomington, McLean County, IL in 1857. Possibly the family was at that time en route to Peoria County, for they were living in Rosefield Township by 1860(6), living one house away from Abraham's sister Hannah [Standeven] Wrigley and her husband Edmund Wrigley. Abraham and Eliza were not with their family in Rosefield Township in 1870(7). Two of the daughters were living in the household of their sister Elizabeth, and her husband, Thomas Wrigley. Another daughter was living next door in the household of Edmund and Hannah [Standeven] Wrigley. Abraham does not appear in the Soundex Census Index in IL in 1880. In the 1900 Census Abraham 75 born England was living Kewanee, Henry County, IL with the family of daughter, Sarah, and her husband Daniel Webster Stancliff and right next door to another daughter, Esther, and her husband James Allen Stancliff. Daughter Jennie Orendorf was in Valley Township, Stark County in 1900, but also moved to Kewanee by 1910(8).

Thomas died 1923 and is buried Texas Union Cemetery, next to Elizabeth. Thomas came to this country with his father in 1841. They moved almost immediately, to Rosefield Township, Peoria County, IL.(11) The reference to living "in Trivoli" referred to their Post Office address. They lived about 17 miles west of Peoria on a farm and remained on the farm until about 1885. During that time the Post Office was changed to Oakhill. When they retired from the strenuous work of farming, Thomas and Elizabeth moved a few miles west to the nearest town, Farmington, Fulton County, IL.
