                                ELIJAH GILLET THROCKMORTON FAMILY

(88)SARAH5 STANCLIFF (Stanbrough P.4, James3, William2, James1)

Probably called "Sarah Jane" was a daughter of Stanbrough Perigrine and Sibbel [Davis] Stancliff born in Upper Canada 1797 or 1798 about the time the family was settling at Hamilton Township, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada, married before 1817 and probably in Athens County, OH ELIJAH GILLET THROCKMORTON son of William and Sarah [Gillett] Throckmorton of Colrain Township, Ross County, OH born 1776-1781 either Morris County, NJ or Hampshire County, VA.

Elijah's family moved to Ohio in 1801, settling in Colrain Township, Ross County. Elijah served in an Ohio Unit during the War of 1812. As a substitute for Timothy Black, he was enrolled as a Private at Franklinton which is now part of the City of Columbus. He was in Capt. Adam Berry's Company of Denny's Regiment of Ohio Militia between July 28, 1813 and Sept 4, 1813.

Elijah was a witness to the Performance Bond given by Stanbrough P. Stancliff at Elk Township, when Stanbrough was elected Justice of the Peace of Elk Township Athens County in 1817. Elijah was a resident of Athens County in 1819, when he served on the Grand Jury of Athens County. He was a resident of Elk Township, Athens County when he was enumerated in the 1820 Census.

Elijah Throckmorton contracted for 167.26 acres of land in Elk Township, then Athens County, now Vinton County, OH on Aug. 11, 1815. The land described as South West portion of Section 28, Range 17, Township 11(1). The Certificate #4545 was dated September 11, 1815 and specified a total price of $334.52 to be paid in four installments, the final payment due Aug. 11, 1819. On July 28, 1819 the final Certificate was issued as Elijah Throckmorton signed the rights in this land over to Jacob Colvin, the transaction was witnessed by brother-in-law, Daniel Duhadway, before father-in-law, Stanbrough P. Stancliff, Justice of the Peace. Jacob Colvin in turn assigned the certificate to William Ayers on Sept. 24, 1821(2). By 1876 the land was in possession of J. Winters(3)

Unfortunately in the capacity of Justice of the Peace Stanbrough evidently was forced to make a judgement against Elijah Throckmorton in Mar. 1818. This Judgement precipitated the mortgage of two of Stanbrough's McArthur Town lots to help his son-in-law satisfy that judgement(4). The lots were signed over to Peter Dunn Jr of Colrain Township, Ross County on Nov. 1, 1819 and the document mentioned the judgement and the sum of $68.00 plus the interest which had accrued from the Mar. 1818 date. The mortgage was never discharged and it is of interest that Peter Dunn made no move to claim his interest in the land after Stanbrough's death but waited until May 6, 1836 to sell his interest in the property to William Hall. From information on Elijah Throckmorton(5) it would seem that Elijah died in 1836 and Peter Dunn then felt free to dispose of the property. Sarah [Stancliff] Throckmorton was listed in those Court Proceedings as living in Ross County in 1839. There was a Jane Throckmorton living next to Andrew and Hannah [Stancliff] McPheeter in Jefferson Township, Ross County, OH in 1840 with eight children in her family, four young males and four young females. This was probably Sarah "Jane" [Stancliff] Throckmorton, widow of Elijah(6).

CHILDREN: Elijah and Sarah [Stancliff] Throckmorton

1. MARY THROCKMORTON "Polly" born Ross County, OH 1818, married Ross County, OH May 4, 1841 STEPHEN SPEAKMAN. An outline of the Speakman family found at the Ohio Genealogical Society presents a possible conflict on this marriage. It says Stephen Speakman, son of Joshua and Mary [Wycoff] Speakman of Vinton County born 1815, died 1861? married 1. May 14, 1841 Elizabeth Throckmorton There is also Stephen, brother of Joshua, son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth [Cox] Speakman who married May 4, 1841 Mary Throckmorton. This would have made him some twenty years older than Mary. Mary probably married Stephen, son of Joshua.
