THE STANCLIFT FAMILY of BATH COUNTY, KENTUCKY

THE CHARLES WHITTINGTON Jr. FAMILY OF BATH COUNTY, KENTUCKY

There can be little doubt that the first Stanclift settler in Montgomery County, KY was either the youngest son of William Stanclift(1) of Portland, CT or one of William's grandsons(2) and therefore belongs in the third or fourth generation. The spelling "Stanclift" was not used by the Stancliff family in England, and is unique with James1 Stanclift of East Middletown, CT and his descendants. Although some of the descendants of James1 Stanclift, adopted the spelling "Stancliff" and "Stancliffe" after the American Revolution, no case has been found where the reverse is true.

Though he may not be the first man named Stanclift to arrive in the area, the first Stanclift to appear in the records of Kentucky was Joseph C. Stanclift. According to the Kentucky Census records of 1810, 1820 and 1830 Joseph was born between 1770 and 1775. Because of his age Joseph has been placed here in the fourth generation, but may well belong in the fifth generation.

William's grandson, (43) Joseph born 1758 son of Josiah, disappeared during the Revolutionary War. William's eldest son, James, had children born between 1763 and 1769 in an area of Connecticut where births were not yet recorded, providing another possible origin for Joseph. In addition James' wife was named Mary Lewis. They are known to have had a son born in that time named Lewis, the first known occurrence of that name in the Stanclift family. All are candidates for the first man in Kentucky.
