The John Hall Gravestone in Riverside Cemetery, Middletown, Connecticut This stone is well preserved despite the lawn mower scars at the bottom. It is an excellent example of the work of the immigrant ancestor, James Stanclift. This stone contains all of the signature elements of this man's style. Some stones in the St. Marys Elland, West Yorkshire Church in England bear the same elements and if found in the Connecticut River Valley would be identified as the work of James Stanclift. James Stanclift cut in the style of these Yorkshire Gravestone Carvers. This gravestone is identified as John Hall Jr. based upon the death date of January XXII 1694. John Hall Sr. and Jr. are identified as first settlers of Middletown, CT.
