Mary Ann Ruffle is the daughter of Mary Ruffle (nee Smeeth, aka. Mary Collins)
and James Ruffle (aka. James Collins) (1).
The family is unusual as they changed the surname between 1861 (3) & 1871
(4). Early census information has the family down as Collins, but after 1871
the family is down as Ruffle. The cause can be found by looking at the James
Ruffle page.
No baptism record has been found for Mary Ann but from Census records it is
believed she was born Abt. 1836
She grew up with 2 sisters, Jane and Emma Collins(1), in an area of Crondall
caled Hampstone Gutter (3), which is believed to be close to Sandy Lane, Church
Crookham.
In 1856, when she was 20, she had a child William Ruffle (3) (christened David William (9)). It is unclear who the father of William was, only his marriage certificate gives a fathers name of William Ruffle. There is a burrial of a William Ruffle, of Ash (a parish just over the Surrey boarder), in Crondall shortly before William is born - could he be the father?
In 1874 Mary, when Mary was 38, she married James Froud (8) a farm labourer. James died in 1903, Mary died Mar 1906 (10).
