Name: Rosemarie Culotta Bertch

E-mail address: mike_rosemarie_bertch.juno.com

Comments: Being a newcomer to the internet it was awesome for me to reach this site. My mother, Adelina Lomonico, came to Ellis Island as a three year old with her mother and brother, Paul, around 1910 to join up with their father, Mariano. My mother was born in Enna, Sicily. She said the church that held her birth certificate was burned down. We celebrated her birthday on September 22nd but she said it could have been March 22nd!?! In 1997 I had the opportunity to visit Enna briefly and it was indeed like a pilgrimage to me. My mother never had the chance to return. If anyone with the name of Lomonico or Culotta would care to get in touch with me I would be grateful. Ciao Belli!

Name: Hélène Andorre Hinson Staley

E-mail address: [email protected]

Comments: I am searching for information about my great, great

grandparents: Raphael {Raffele} Metallo {a.k.a. Ralph McTall} and

Mary Josephine Gardini {Gardine, Jardine}. My second great grandmother

divorced my second great grandfather after four children with him and

married Vincent James Checco {Vincenzo Di Ceseare}. Long before

Josephine Gardini ever met her second husband and years before her

immigration to the US, she lived in Italy. Records indicate she was

born in Mélito, Italy; however, other records state she was born in

Cosenza, Italy. Her first husband -- my second great grandfather:

Raphael Metallo, I know from family members, had lived in Calabria,

Italy before immigrating to New York, Yew York from a port in Naples,

Italy in June 1891. Josephine and Raphael both spoke Calabrese Italian,

so it makes sense that she was from Cosenza, which is close to

Calabria. People, I have been told, speak Calabrese there. My second

great grandmother was born January 19, 1881 supposedly in Cosenza.

She died February 26, 1975 in Hibbing, Mn. Her death certificate does

not indicate the names of her parents, and no one in my family can tell

me the name of Josephine's parents. Josephine went by the surname of

Jardine, which had been changed from Gardine, and this name had been

changed from Gardini. Records show her listed as all of these names

from time to time. The Gardini name is listed as Josephine's name on

the death certificate for one of her children in the space requiring

name of mother: Josephine Gardini Metallo Checco. Raphael Metallo

{aka: Ralph McTall} was born in Tarano Castello, Italy May 24, 1867;

however, other certificates I have collected on him give also the

following years for birth: 1864, 1867, 1869. He is buried in Thomas,

West Virginia, where he passed away: Tucker County, W.Va. I am also

researching the Aiello surname -- trying to determine from which side

this name is connected bloodwise. The son of Raphael Metallo --- My

great grandfather Louie Metallo {aka: Louie McTall} and one of his

sisters Caroline Lena Metallo {married Lorenzo Cione in Randolph

County, W.Va. in 1915} was cared for (after his parents' separation)

by Filippina Aiello Prato {aka: Anna Pratt} and Pasquele Prato {aka:

Pascoe Pratt} from 1907 until 1912 for Louie and from 1907 until 1915

for Caroline in West Virginia. A 1910 Census shows them living in

Randolph County, W.Va. Another Aunt "Rosie" is said to have cared for

my great grandfather Louie McTall {Metallo} and his sister Caroline.

Josephine Gardini had a sister named: Rose, and this might have been

the same aunt. No one in my family can tell me the names of Josephine's

parents, and no one can tell me the names of Raphael's parents. Does

anyone reading this message have any information on this? Is anyone

reading this message researching the following surnames: Metallo,

Gardini, Aiello? Write to me if you have suggestions or information.

Thanks. Hélène {e-mail: [email protected]}. or fax: 1-919-774-5611.

Name: Riccarda Mescola

E-mail address: [email protected]

Comments: This is a nice web site, someone posted it on the Pie bulletin board. I am researching Mescola, Pesavento, Cremaschi from northern Italy, and Ascanio, Trentanelli, Ferrari and Gambale/Gambalie in Southern Italy. I also have the phone book for the province of Vicenza, if anyone needs any numbers. If I may make a couple of suggestions, there are 2 web sites I use constantly, they are the international directory at www.infospace.com, click on international, click on Italy, click on people finder, and type in the name you seek, if that is too broad, then narrow it down by adding a city, then a first name, while you are there try the international search, and also the email search. If you find no one with an email address in Italy, click on any country. The other one is www.expediamaps.com click on placefinder and type in the place you seek. It will bring up several phonetic choices, click on one, then you can zoom in and out of the map, print it, email it, and save it to the home page for yourself, you can save up to 10 maps, good luck and ciao for now, Riccarda
