What's New
January 28, 2002
Hi everybody!! You probably thought you were never
going to hear from me again - sorry about that. We have been working on
the reunion, but couldn't secure a location until after January 1. The
Reunion will be held either at the North Overlook Shelter on Lake Red
Rock, or at the lodge at Lake Keomah in Oskaloosa. The lodge on Keomah
is our first choice, but there's a possibility that it may be closed for
remodeling. We'll let you know as soon as we know.
We will be having the Ryan Reunion Friday - Sunday,
June 21 - 23, 2002. The following is being planned:
| Friday: |
An evening meal and visiting. |
| Saturday: |
Lunch and dinner
Activities for the kids (and adults!)
Silent action
Reunion planning meeting
Possible genealogy lesson
More visiting
An evening Mass |
You can come early and visit historic Pella, go
golfing at Bos Landen Golf Course (named best public course in Iowa), or
shop at the many specialty, gift, and antique stores. (Be aware that
Pella pretty much shuts down on Sundays.) Or maybe take a ride to
Melrose - it's only an hour away.
We have reserved rooms at Country Inn & Suites in
Pella. Rates are $59.00 per night. This includes free breakfast, pool
and all other amenities. If you would like a room, please call
641-620-1111 by May 24-25, 2002 and tell them you are with the Ryan
Reunion.
The Ryan Clan is a multi-talented bunch. We thought we
would put those talents to good use and have a silent auction. Are you
crafty? Can you crochet, sew, make homemade goodies, can jams, or
anything else? Or are you just a professional shopper? How about
donating an item to help with funds for the next reunion or cemetery
upkeep? As in the past, items are also needed for door prizes. If you
would like to donate something, please bring it to the reunion.
There have been some family history questions that
require some answers. Most concern the three brothers that came over. In
what year and on which ship did they arrive? Where was their port of
entry? Where were they before arriving in Iowa? Why did they come to
Melrose? Were any in the Civil War? Were they all farmers? Is there any
info on the six siblings back in Ireland? Does anyone have anything that
has been passed down from these three or their children? Bring your
answers to the Reunion.
We are still working on a food cost. I will send out
another letter with those details and a RSVP soon.
Please pass this along to children, grandchildren and any relative that
may be interested in coming. I am mailing this to those whose emails I
don't have. Please forward any emails I don't have. If you have any
questions, please feel free to email me at caraccit@yahoo.com.
Hope to see you in June,
Teresa Caracci

Megan Ryan and the 28-pound
catfish she caught on Lake Red Rock, Iowa
(click on photo for a larger view) |
Earlier this week, 16-year-old Megan Ryan went on a typical summer
fishing trip with her father, Mike Ryan, and her boyfriend, Mark Harmon,
on nearby Lake Red Rock, Iowa.
They were trolling by the beach near the North Overlook when Megan's
line got caught on what she thought was "a HUGE snag."
When her line started shaking, however, she knew it was more than just a
snag. It turned out that Megan had a 28-pound, 42-inch-long
catfish on her line.
"Dad had to finish pulling it in because he didn't want to break
his 'precious' fishing pole," said Megan. Reeling in the
monster cat was definitely a team effort. "I laughed the
whole time while Dad and Mark tried to figure out what to do with
it. It was hilarious!" said Megan.
Mark had to hang on to the fish until the trio got to shore where
Mike found someone with a digital camera at the visitors'
center.
It was the biggest fish any of them had ever caught on a rod and
reel.
August 5, 2000:
The biannual Ryan Roots Reunion was held today at Lake Panorama,
Iowa. About 75 relatives attended from Iowa, West Virginia,
Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Pennsylvania. Although
it was VERY hot and humid, everyone had fun whether they were boating,
swimming, eating, researching their genealogy, or just plain visiting
with each other.
Several awards were given out including:
| Oldest member present: |
Katie Kenworthy (93 years young) |
|
Bill Jones (runner-up at 87 years young) |
|
|
| Youngest member present: |
Claire Thomsen (3 months old) |
|
|
| Furthest-traveled: |
Jerry Ryan (from West Virgina) |
|
|
Several door prizes were also awarded (donated by various family
members.) Souvenir cups were also provided by Linda Ryan, Robert
Ryan, and Joe Ryan. T-shirts were available to commemorate
the event (Contact Dave Ryan of Lake Panorama if you would like to
purchase one.)
Dave and Barb Ryan did a wonderful job of organizing and hosting this
year's event.
The next reunion will be held in Pella, Iowa in 2002 and will be
hosted by Karen Janssen and Teresa Caracci (they really are Ryans -
despite the Dutch and Italian names!)

Welcome
Welcome to the official website for the Ryan family descendants of
Daniel Ryan and Mary Ahern of Ballyvorney, Ireland, County of
Cork. Daniel and Mary had six children (that we know of) who
remained in Ireland, and three sons (Timothy Ryan, John A. Ryan , and
Daniel F. Ryan) who came to America and settled in the town of Melrose,
Iowa.
The purpose of this site is to allow family members to share their
heritage in the form of photographs, stories, and historical
documents. It will also be a forum to share news of current
happenings in the Ryan family.
If you would like to submit any material or suggestions to this site,
please contact Teresa (Ryan) Caracci.
