Family photos, in my opinion, is an essential part of genealogy.  You may create a significant family tree, but a old family photo does "say a thousand words".  Passed down through my family was a large steamer trunk with several inches deep of unidentified photos.  Such finds can be solid gold.  I have talked to related family from Europe and have found out that the Polaroid "craze" that hit the US in the early 1900's took many years to imbed itself there.  There is a general lack of old photos existing overseas.  Such photos are craved by our European counterparts.

I am obsessed in identifying all of my old photos.  You should be too!  Sometimes such a photo may be the first link connecting yourself to specific line in your family.  Duplicate photos do get passed down along differing family tree lines.  A face may duplicate itself in two different photos, then bang, you've just located a cousin.  On today's Internet, many property assessor departments have put current property reports and photos on-line.  I have used these property photos to verify a photo of that same property taken 85 years earlier.  This also helps identify unrecognized people in such photos.  I make it a habit to obtain a current photo where any relation lived, once I have verified that the original structure is still standing.  This can help greatly in the telling of your family history.

I have assembled a few of the distant faces of the major family surnames from my past.  Just click on the button to choose the path that you wish to take.
