Introduction

This page is part of the Stewarts of Balquhidder Research Group Web Site jointly hosted by myself, Ryk Brown, and my research partner, Chuck Speed.  The first-time reader is advised to begin with the introduction found on the Principal Families Page before proceeding on with this page.  The information on this page was compiled by our fellow researcher, Fiona Truncik, with editorial assistance from Ryk Brown.  This page presents transcriptions of all entries containing the surname "Stewart" or variant found in the Old Parish Records for Balquhidder Parish in Perthshire, Scotland.  These transcriptions have been arranged by family group and location.  The original transcriptions were done by Fiona Truncik and can be found here:

Original transcriptions by Fiona Truncik (click here)

There is no guarantee of accuracy here.  In some cases we have additional information on these families to support the arrangements below, while in other cases the records have been grouped together in what appear to us to be logical family groupings.  These groupings are not verified.  If you would like to verify the groupings for yourself (which we recommend) you may refer to Fiona's transcriptions, but it is always best to check the OPR yourself.  Those families for which we have additional information can be found beginning here: Stewarts of Balquhidder Principal Families.

If you are looking for a chronological arrangement of these entries, please refer to Fiona's original transcriptions above.

Places and Place Names

The reader should note that many families lived in more than one place and where such is the case the entries for these families are repeated under all locations where they resided.

Almost all of the place names listed below were originally Gaelic place names.  Through centuries of contact with English culture many of these place names have been corrupted and their spellings have changed numerous times.  Some of these places no longer exist at all.  Where the place name can be found with multiple spellings the current modern spelling is used for indexing purposes, while the other known variant spellings are listed subordinately.  If you are looking for a particular place name which you know to be in Balquhidder parish but cannot find it here, trying looking under any place name that looks similar, or, failing that, please contact us and we will try to assist you.

Gaelic Place Name Elements

When reading variants of some place names it is helpful to understand some of the Gaelic qualifying terms.  Where the meaning of a place name is known we have tried to include a definition below, but the following list of terms will be helpful to the reader in understanding variations on these names.  Hopefully this will assist you in understanding why we have treated such places as "Ardnandave" ("height of the hero" and "Auchnandave" ("field of the hero") as the same place -- "Auch" being the field below and "Ard" being the hill above.

bullet

Achadh (Auch) = "field"

bullet

Ard = "height" or "upper"

bullet

Ballie (Bal) = "large farmstead"

bullet

Beag (Beg, Bheg) = "little"

bullet

Dal = "dale" or "field between hills"

bullet

Easter = "Eastern" (this is not actually Gaelic, but Scots, however as it is not common English usage outside of Scotland we have included it here.)

bullet

Mor (Mor, Mhor, Mhore) = "big" or "great"

bullet

Wester = "Western" (this is not actually Gaelic, but Scots, however as it is not common English usage outside of Scotland we have included it here.)

MacGregor Alias Surnames

Although this study concerns itself with the surname Stewart, many Stewart families married MacGregors.  However, the MacGregor surname was at various times proscripted so alias surnames had to be used.  Many of these alias surnames continued to be used even after proscription was lifted.  The most common MacGregor aliases used in Balquhidder parish were MURRAY, DRUMMOND and CAMPBELL.  The family of McGregor-alias-Murray are believed to be the clan chief's family.  The family of MacGregor-alias-Campbell are believed to be related to Rob Roy MacGregor.  And the MacGregor-alias-Drummond family is of unknown origin.  Other documented MacGregor aliases in this parish include BUCHANAN and MCLAUGHLAN.  To the best of our knowledge there were no native families surnamed Murray or Drummond living in Balquhidder parish and all instances of Murray and Drummond are believed to be MacGregor aliases.

The following entries shown in blue are yet to be checked.

Malcolm/Callum MCGRIGOR-alias-BUCHANAN-alias-MCLAUGHLAN-alias-MCLEASTAIR (MC~AIRS) and Janet STEUART in (Easter and Wester) Ruscachan and Ardoch. (Callum is the Gaelic form of Malcolm).  McLeastair is probably a corruption of McAlestair.  It seems likely that Malcolm's real name was McGrigor and that he was probably son of Alexander and thus sometimes went by his patronymic of McAlistair or by his alias of Buchanan (presumably chosen as the Buchanan family owned Ruscachan).  The McLaughlan may simply be a misreading of McLeastair, as these references all show unclear handwriting.

Auchleskine is referred to in a couple of entries as "Beally or Auchleskine", possibly a misread for "Beally of Auchleskine", which would be a corruption of Baillie of Auchleskine.  Beally or Baille is actually more properly called Bail'-aonghois, or "Farmtoun of Angus" located immediately east of Easter Auchleskine at the site known as the Beannachd Aonghuis or Blessing of Angus, where the Angus Stone was once located.

Auchraw on Loch Earn (Achra)

bullet

Including Leachkin (Leachan) of Achra

bullet

located on the northwest shore of Loch Earn at the foot of Glenogle, east of Lochearnhead, near present-day Earnknowe.  Auchraw and its Leachkin are both now ruins

bullet

achadh "field" + possibly rath "grace or good fortune" or "a house surrounded by an earthen rampart", suggesting "field of good fortune"

bullet

Leachkin is also spelled "Leachdan" in an early OPR entry.  In Gaelic, when a "d" follows a "ch" it's pronounced as a "k", thus "Leachdan" and "Leachkin" are phonetically identical.  Also, the single "c" in Gaelic is also pronounced as "chk", thus "leacann" is one possibly etymology, meaning "sloping side of a hill" however the final "n" sound in this word is longer and more nasal.  Thus leachdan, which means "graveyard", is preferred.  It also makes sense considering it's the McLaren burial ground.

Robert STEWART or FERGUSSONE, bap. 16 NOV 1733, begotten in fornication.  Father Donald described as "sometimes in Middle Achtow".  (It is hard to understand how this birth can be shown as illegitimate when the previous birth shows the parents as married.  As Robert is shown as "Stewart or Fergussone" then it is possible that Robert was the child of Katrine Stewart and an unknown man.  It is also possible that there were two different couples with the same names living in Monachiltuarach and Achtow.)

James and Betterage were m. 18 JAN 1717 in Balquhidder (both in this parish).  But there is an earlier marriage for James and Janet m. 19 MAY 1715 in Balquhidder, "both of this parish".  There are no children shown for James and Janet either in Fiona or IGI, however the first child, Margaret, below is shown with mother given only as "Steuart".  Thus Margaret could be the child of either mother.  And the James who married Janet could be the same James who married Betterage or it could be two different Jameses.

  1. Margaret STEUART, bap. 19 NOV 1718 in Lianach (mother given only as "Steuart", could be a child of either Betterage or Janet Steuart, see note above)

  2. Robert STEUART, bap. 23 OCT 1719 in Wester Achtow (mother given as Betterage Steuart)

  3. Patrick STEUART, bap. 20 DEC 1730 in Wester Achtow (mother given as Betterage Steuart)

  2. Bettrice STEUART, bap. 8 MAY 1724 in Stronvar Mor (mother not given, possibly of this family but probably not, more likely to be child of John Steuart and Janet McNab in Stronvar Mor)

  3. Anna STEUART, bap. 10 MAR 1725 in Tulloch (mother not given, not certain to be of this family, may be Anne Stewart)

  9. Duncan STEWART, bap. 10 NOV 1740 in (place not given, mother given as Janet McGrigor)

  1. Alexander STEUART, bap. 4 NOV 1725 in Achtow Mor

John STEUART and Anne (or Anna) STEUART in Wester Achtow. (There are two marriages in the Balquhidder OPR for a couple named John and Anna STEUART on 12 AUG 1716 and 29 MAR 1717 both indicating John and Anne were "both of this parish", there is also a 3 MAY 1718 in Callander parish.  However, there is only one set of children for such a couple.

  1. Donald STEUART, bap. 10 JUN 1718 (place not given)

  2. Anna STEUART, bap. 10 MAR 1725 in Tulloch (mother not given may also be daughter of Janet Drummond-alias-McGrigor)

  3. Anne STEUART, bap. 18 FEB 1727 or 20 FEB 1727 (double entered) in Wester Achtow

  4. Robert STEUART, bap. 6 JUL 1729 in Tulloch

Alexander STEUART and Janet MCGRIGOR-alias-DRUMMOND in Balliefoyle, Easter Achtow, Cuill and Tulloch. m? 26 FEB 1715 in Balquhidder (Alexander of Comrie parish, Janet Drummond of Balquhidder parish.)  Not certain if this marriage is for this couple. Again, the age spread of the children here suggests the likelihood that this is more than one couple.  In all cases the mother's name is given as Janet McGrigor.

  1. Janet STEUART, bap. 14 MAY 1721 in Balliefoyle (mother given as Janet McGrigor)

  2. Alexander STEUART, bap. 24 AUG 1725 in Tulloch (no mother given, may not be from this family as there were two Alexander Stewarts in Tulloch at this time.)

  10. Unknown STEUART, bap. 10 JUN 1743 in Tulloch (mother given as Janet Drummond)

Duncan Roy STEUART, servitor to the miller of Edinample, and Janet COSKERACK in Wester Achtow

  1. Margaret STEUART or COSKERACK, bap. 2 DEC 1732, begotten in fornication

Donald FERGUSSONE and Katrine STEWART in Monachyletuarach and "sometimes in" Middle Achtow,

  1. Issobell FERGUSSONE, bap. 22 JAN 1733 in Monachilltuarach. (Parents recorded as Donald Fergussone and Katrine Stewart, his wife -- see next note.)

  2. It is also possible that there were two different couples with the same names living in Monachiltuarach and Achtow, but unlikely.)

  6. Janet STEWART, bap. 16 JUL 1765 in Wester Achtow

  7. Margaret STEWART, bap. 2 NOV 1767 in Wester Achtow

James STEUART and Margaret STEUART in Wester Achtow, Craig Ruidh, Castaran, Dallanlaggan and Invercarnaig.  The thirty year age spread for the children of this family makes it unlikely that we are dealing with only a single family.  In the absence of marriages or other information it makes it difficult to know for sure.  However if we are dealing with two families then it would seem reasonable to suggest that the Invercarnaig births are all one family and the other births could comprise a second or even third family.  The Dallanlaggan birth would be a toss-up as to which family to account it with.

  1. John STEUART, bap. 2 AUG 1753 or 9 AUG 1753 (hard to read) in Wester Achtow.
