Introduction

Welcome to the Cuthbert family page of my family history website.  This page covers the family of Alexander Donald Sharpe's mother, Mary Jane Cuthbert.  The Cuthbert family's ancestors include pioneer farmers in Kent County and Middlesex County, Ontario from the late 1700s. Originally they descended from hearty farming stock from the north-eastern coastal regions of Banffshire and Morayshire, Scotland where their ancestry can be traced back to the early-1700s with confidence and tentatively to the mid-1300s with the baronial family of the Cuthberts of Castlehill in Inverness.

Please Note: This page is intended only as a narrative historical overview of this family.  There is additional detailed information available for almost ever person presented on this page.  To avoid the unnecessary work of double-entering some data, the additional information can be found in the accompanying GEDCOM database.  Please make sure you click on the INDEX button at the bottom of the page so you don't miss out on potentially valuable additional information.

The Origin Of The Surname Cuthbert

Saint Cuthbert

The name Cuthbert is a patronymic surname probably coming from an ancient ancestor whose first name would have been Cuthbert. Although our Cuthberts were Scottish, Cuthbert is recorded originally as an English name, and is derived from the Old English elements cu, meaning "famous" and beorht, meaning "bright". One of the earliest known Cuthberts, after whom most Cuthberts are most likely named, was St. Cuthbert, a 7th century Benedictine monk who became bishop of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. The "island" of Lindisfarne is an island only at high tide, but is accessible by land at low tide and is located about ten miles south of the Scots/English border city of Berwick-Upon-Tweed on the Northumberland coast which, at the time of St. Cuthbert, would have been located in the Angle kingdom of Northumbria. St. Cuthbert is credited as one of the early saints who helped establish Christianity in Northern England and Southern Scotland.

Our Cuthbert ancestors came from the northeast coast of Scotland, nowhere near Lindisfarne.  Present research indicates that our Cuthberts likely descend from the baronial family of the Cuthberts of Castlehill in Inverness.  (See below.)

About Banff and Moray

Our Cuthbert family's earliest confirmed origins centre around the small fishing village of Port Gordon in Rathven, Banffshire, Scotland.  Later generations spread out through adjacent Morayshire.

The County of Banff is a registration county for property, and Banffshire (Siorrachd Bhanbh in Gaelic) is a Lieutenancy area of Scotland.  The County of Banff, also known as Banffshire, was a local government county of Scotland with its own county council between 1890 and 1975. The county town was Banff although the largest community was Buckie to the west. It bordered the Moray Firth to the north, Moray and Inverness-shire to the west, and Aberdeenshire to the south.

The region remained largely Roman Catholic after the Reformation (16th century) and suffered greatly in the ensuing struggles. During the British Civil Wars (17th century), Banffshire was a Royalist stronghold. Located in the area are the ruins of several medieval castles and the 12th century kirk of Gamrie. From 1975 to 1996, the area of the previous county lay within the Grampian Region.

Moray (pronounced Murray, Scottish Gaelic Moireibh or Moireabh) is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland. It lies in the north-east of the country, with coastline on the Moray Firth, and borders the council areas of Aberdeenshire and Highland.

Port Gordon

- From the article on Rathven in The New Statistical Account of Scotland (1842)

"This village, of which the Duke of Richmond is now proprietor, was named from the late Noble Dukes of Gordon. It contains a population of 470, and is attached, quoad sacra, to the Chapel of Ease at Enzie. There is a tolerably good harbour, and ... considerable business is done in exporting grain and in importing salt and coals. There are 7 large boats and 10 small.

The large boats are from 12 to 14 tons in weight, and the small ones between 4 and 5. The price of a large boat is 27; masts and sails, including cordage, 16; each net is from 45 to 50 yards in length, and costs 3,10s. In fishing cod, ling and haddocks, a large boat requires 8 men; and each boat has, from February to April, nine lines, containing 800 hooks at a yard's distance. From this period, when the season for taking large fish begins, till April, the fishermen seldom go further from the shore than fifty miles. From the end of April, or beginning of May, they frequently sail out to the distance of eighty miles in search of skate ... Cod, ling, halibut, tusk, and skate, are the only large fish caught in any quantity in the Moray Frith. They are salted in pots on the beach, and dried on the rocks, or on a temporary frame made for the purpose... The ling and skate are the most valuable, on account of their livers yielding a considerable portion of oil, which is sold from 10d to 1s per pint. .. In June, the dried fish is packed in the large boats, and carried for sale to the different towns along the Fife coast, to Edinburgh, Glasgow and occasionally to Ireland. A cargo is valued at 100."

The Cuthberts in Banff and Moray, Scotland

The earliest verifiable ancestor of our Cuthbert family is John Cuthbert (shown below) who was born about 1715 in Scotland and who resided Keith, Banffshire.  John's birth record has not been found.  John's tentative birth family and ancestry is presented further below following the presentation of his descendants.

John Cuthbert and Janet Humphrey

John Cuthbert may have been born ABT 19 AUG 1713 in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland as the son of Alexander and Betty Cuthbert, however this birth is speculative and is based solely on IGI data and onomastics.  Regardless of the speculative nature of John's birth data, it is known that he was living in Keith, Banffshire, at the time of his marriage.  John Cuthbert married on 13 AUG 1742 in Bellie, Morayshire, Scotland (the wedding is also registered on 26 AUG 1742 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland) to Janet (H)UMPHREY.  A tentative birth for Janet has been found ABT 14 AUG 1720 in Elgin, Morayshire, Scotland as the daughter of David Umphrey and Janet Russel, however this does not fit with onomastics.  Baptismal records for their children indicate that John and Janet resided in the village of Keith itself, as opposed to an outlying farm.  It is believed that the paternal line of this family were all saddle makers, shoemakers and leather workers.  John Cuthbert and Janet Umphrey had the following known children:

  1. Has No Children Alexander CUTHBERT b: ABT 9 AUG 1743 in Keith, Keith, Banffshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  2. Has No Children Margaret CUTHBERT b: ABT 23 MAY 1745 in Keith, Keith, Banffshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  3. Has No Children James CUTHBERT b: ABT 18 JUN 1747 in Keith, Keith, Banffshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  4. Has Children William CUTHBERT b: ABT 20 AUG 1749 in Keith, Keith, Banffshire, Scotland.  William married on 19 DEC 1771 in Bellie, Moray, Scotland to Margaret FORSYTH.  Their descendants are presented below under BRANCH 1.
  5. Has No Children John CUTHBERT, b: b: ABT 17 NOV 1751 in Keith, Keith, Banffshire, Scotland
  6. Has Children Patrick/Peter CUTHBERT, b: ABT 1761 in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  We have no record to verify that Peter was a child of John Cuthbert and Janet Humphrey.  The case for his association with this family is presented below under his family entry.  He married on 20 Oct 1781 in Botriphnie, Banff, Scotland to Elspet DALLAS.  Their descendants are presented below under BRANCH 2.
  7. Has No Children Jannet CUTHBERT b: ABT 22 MAR 1761 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.

BRANCH 1:
The Descendents of William Cuthbert and Margaret Forsyth

William CUTHBERT, b: ABT 20 AUG 1749 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland as the son of John Cuthbert and Janet Humphrey, shown above.  William married on 19 DEC 1771 in Bellie, Moray, Scotland to Margaret FORSYTH, however the marriage register records her name as Jannet Forsyth.  She was born ABT 16 OCT 1754 in Bellie, Morayshire, Scotland as the daughter of John FORSYTH and Margaret JACK.   William Cuthbert and Margaret Forsyth had the following known children:

  1. Has No Children Jannet CUTHBERT b: ABT 4 OCT 1772 in Bellie, Morayshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  2. Has No Children John CUTHBERT b: OCT 1774 in Bellie, Morayshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  3. Has No Children William CUTHBERT b: 26 DEC 1776 in Bellie, Morayshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  4. Has No Children Margaret CUTHBERT b: ABT 28 MAR 1779 in Bellie, Morayshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  5. Has No Children Elisabeth CUTHBERT b: 12 MAR 1781 in Bellie, Morayshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  6. Has No Children James CUTHBERT b: 9 MAR 1783 in Bellie, Morayshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  7. Has Children Alexander CUTHBERT b: 3 FEB 1785 in Bellie, Morayshire, Scotland.  He married on 11 JAN 1818 in Bellie, Moray, Scotland to Elizabeth LENDRUM.  Their descendants are presented below.
  8. Has No Children Patrick/Peter CUTHBERT b: 28 JAN 1787 in Bellie, Morayshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  9. Has No Children Robert CUTHBERT b: 11 JAN 1789 in Bellie, Morayshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  10. Has No Children George CUTHBERT b: 16 JUL 1791 in Bellie, Morayshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.

William Cuthbert is believed, but not confirmed, to have married secondly to Margaret MCKENZIE. Their marriage is double registered on 9 FEB 1794 in Bellie, Moray and 10 FEB 1794 in Keith, Banff.  They had the following children:

  1. Has Children Andrew CUTHBERT b: ABT 21 DEC 1794 in Bellie, Moray, Scotland.  In 1851 Andrew and Ann were living in Bellie, Moray, next door to the family of William Geddes and Margaret Thomson. Suggesting further connections between the Thomson and Geddes families.  Andrew was employed as a farmer of 24 acres.  The IGI reveals no earlier possible marriages for Andrew, so it is suggested that this marriage, although late, was his first marriage. Onomastics would support such a suggestion.  Andrew married on 13 APR 1845 in Boharm and Bellie, Moray, Scotland to Ann THOMSON b: 1814 in Keith, Banff, Scotland.  They had the following children:
    1. Has No Children William CUTHBERT b: 30 APR 1846 in Bellie, Moray, Scotland
    2. Has No Children Ann CUTHBERT b: 12 APR 1848 in Bellie, Moray, Scotland
    3. Has No Children Andrew CUTHBERT b: 12 FEB 1850 in Bellie, Moray, Scotland
    4. Has No Children Jessie Jane Sarah CUTHBERT b: ABT 15 MAR 1858 in Bellie, Moray, Scotland
  2. Has No Children Janet CUTHBERT b: ABT 3 AUG 1797 in Bellie, Moray, Scotland
  3. Has No Children Ann CUTHBERT b: 27 NOV 1801 in Bellie, Moray, Scotland

Alexander Cuthbert and Elizabeth Lendrum in Rathven, Banff, Scotland

Of these children, only the line of Alexander Cuthbert is known.  Alexander was a shoemaker and hotel-keeper in or near Bellie or Rathven, Banff.  His sons William, Alexander, and Andrew are also known to have worked as shoemakers.  He married Elizabeth LENDRUM on 11 JAN 1818 in Bellie, Morayshire, Scotland.  Elizabeth was also known as Betsey and her last name is also recorded as Lannum, Lethrum, and Latheron.  Her birth has not been reliably identified.  Alexander and Betsey had the following known children:

  1. Has Children William CUTHBERT b: ABT 23 APR 1818 in Rathven, Banff, Scotland, who, like his father, became a shoemaker.  William married on 11 JUL 1840 in Deskford, Banff, Scotland (also registered in Rathven and Enzie) to Elizabeth GEDDES.  Elizabeth was born ABT 1816 in Rathven or Cullen in Banff, Scotland as the daughter of Alexander and Margaret Geddes.  William and Elizabeth did not emigrate and are found in the 1881 census in Scotland as follows below.  They had the following children:
    1. Has No Children Alexander CUTHBERT b: 1841 in Rathven, Banff, Scotland.  No documentary evidence exists to support this Alexander.  He is suggested from onomastics only.  He is believed to have died young prior to the birth of his same named brother.
    2. Has No Children Elizabeth CUTHBERT b: 1843 in Rathven, Banff, Scotland
    3. Has No Children William CUTHBERT b: 1845 in Rathven, Banff, Scotland
    4. Has No Children Janet CUTHBERT b: 1849 in Rathven, Moray, Scotland
    5. Has No Children Alexander CUTHBERT b: 1850 in Rathven, Banff, Scotland
    6. Has No Children Ann CUTHBERT b: 1853 in Rathven, Banff, Scotland
    7. Has No Children Margaret CUTHBERT b: 23 FEB 1855 in Rathven, Banff, Scotland
    8. Has No Children John CUTHBERT b: 14 MAR 1858 in Rathven, Banff, Scotland
  1. Has No Children Betty CUTHBERT b: ABT 3 NOV 1819 in Rathven, Banffshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  2. Has Children Alexander CUTHBERT b: ABT 25 SEP 1823 in Rathven, Banffshire, Scotland.  He married firstly in Banff to Ann WATSON, with whom he had two children, after which she died.  Alexander came to Canada with his brother Andrew in 1854 and settled in Wardsville near Glencoe, Middlesex County, Ontario.  He worked as shoemaker.  He is presumed to have married secondly in Ontario to Mary Preston and had a family of 9 children.  Their story continues below.
  3. Has No Children Helen CUTHBERT b: ABT 27 SEP 1825 in Rathven, Banffshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  4. Has Children Andrew CUTHBERT b: ABT 21 MAR 1828 in Port Gordon, Rathven, Banffshire, Scotland.  He came to Canada with his brother Alexander in 1854 and eventually settled for a while in Glencoe, Middlesex County, Ontario and then moved on to Dresden, Kent County, Ontario.  He married Marjorie ANDERSON.  Their story continues below.
  5. Has No Children Peter CUTHBERT b: ABT 27 AUG 1830 in Rathven, Banffshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  6. Has No Children John CUTHBERT b: ABT 2 SEP 1833 in Rathven, Banffshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.
  7. Has No Children Anne CUTHBERT b: ABT 23 OCT 1836 in Enzie, Banffshire, Scotland of whom nothing more is known.

Alexander Cuthbert and Mary Preston of Wardsville, Middlesex, Ontario

Alexander CUTHBERT was born ABT 25 SEP 1823 in Rathven, Banffshire, Scotland. Alexander married firstly on 17 JUN 1848 in Rathven, Banff, Scotland to Ann WATSON (the same marriage was also registered on 22 JUN 1848 in the Free Church, Enzie, Banff, Scotland).  It appears that only two children came of this marriage and it is assumed that Ann died in childbirth.  It should be noted that these two children were born just prior to Alexander's known date of immigration.  Census records in 1851 show this family living next door to Alexander's parents.  Alexander is shown working as a shoemaker.

  1. Has Children Alexander Watson CUTHBERT b: 26 JUN 1850 in Enzie, Banff, Scotland.  The children shown here for Alexander are not confirmed. They are inferred from a hand-written incomplete family history record which implies, but not does not say, that these children belong to Alexander Watson Cuthbert. Regrettably, the record does not give places for any of the dates. These persons have not been identified in 1880/81 census records for Canada, USA, Scotland or England. Thus it is suggested that Alexander may have immigrated to Australia or another colony whose records are not available to us.  According to family records, Alexander was the father of:
    1. Has Children William Mercer Wilson CUTHBERT b: 5 FEB 1875.  William married on 3 JUL 1901 to Mollie WALKER b: UNKNOWN.  They had the following child:
      1. Has No Children Daughter CUTHBERT b: AFT 1901
    2. Has Children Oliver Dudley CUTHBERT b: 23 MAY 1884.  Oliver married on 14 DEC 1905 to Julia LYLETTON b: UNKNOWN.  They had the following child:
      1. Has No Children Son CUTHBERT b: BET 1905 AND 1909
    3. Has Children Violet Ivy CUTHBERT b: 15 MAY 1887.  Violet married on 21 DEC 1905 to Frank SHIMMIN b: UNKNOWN.  They had the following child:
      1. Son SHIMMIN b: BET 1905 AND 1912
    4. Has No Children Myrtle Isabella CUTHBERT b: 20 APR 1890.  Myrtle had no children by her first husband and adopted a daughter with her second husband.  Myrtle married firstly on 12 SEP 1911 to Frank MORRISS b: UNKNOWN and secondly on 2 MAY 1925 to Albert LeRoy BULIA b: UNKNOWN.
  2. Has Children Mary CUTHBERT b: 18 MAY 1853 in Enzie, Banff, Scotland.  A Mary Cuthbert closely matching this person, recorded as being born 11 MAY 1852 is known to have been born in Banffshire and to have immigrated to Canada as a young girl.  No other IGI birth closely matches, and she is the only Mary Cuthbert found in the IGI born in Banff between 1848 and 1858, so it appears probable that she is the same Mary Cuthbert who came to Canada from Banff.  The Canadian Mary Cuthbert is known to have married on 19 JAN 1875 in Canada to William LEADBETTER, b: 11 NOV 1844 in Stratford upon Avon, England.  They began their family in Canada and then moved to Nevada.  They are known to have had the following children.  This branch is being researched by Paula Jones.
    1. Has No Children Noble William LEADBETTER b: 23 NOV 1875 in Ontario, Canada
    2. Has No Children Mary Ellen LEADBETTER b: 22 SEP 1877 in Virginia City, Storey County, Nevada, USA.  Mary married firstly on 22 SEP 1897 in Benton County, Oregon, USA to Edward WITHAM b: 31 JAN 1862 in Benton County, Oregon, USA.  She married secondly in 1939 to Homer LILY b: 1870 in Benton County, Oregon, USA.
    3. Has No Children Charles A. LEADBETTER b: 1879 in Virginia City, Storey County, Nevada, USA.  Charles married Thalia Grace UNKNOWN b: ABT 1880.
    4. Has No Children Elizabeth Ann LEADBETTER b: 20 AUG 1884 in Virginia City, Storey County, Nevada, USA.  Elizabeth married firstly in 1903 in Corvalis, Benton County, Oregon, USA to Charles Alfred NEWTON b: 23 DEC 1882 in Arapahoe, Nebraska, USA.  She married secondly in 1938 to Nick LUNDE b: ABT 1885.
    5. Has No Children Henry G. LEADBETTER b: 27 JAN 1890 in Virginia City, Storey County, Nevada, USA.  He served as a corporal in the US army in WWI.
  3. Annie CUTHBERT, b 1855 in Ontario.  She was residing with her birth family in Chatham, Kent County, Ontario, Canada in 1871 and has not been found in later census records.

Alexander Cuthbert came to Canada in 1854 with his younger brother, Andrew.  It is known that Andrew stopped first in London, Middlesex, Ontario, and it is presumed that Alexander did also.  Alexander settled in Wardsville, Middlesex County, Ontario not far from his brother Andrew, who settled in Glencoe, Middlesex County, Ontario.  Both brothers worked as shoemakers -- at least that's what their trade was officially called.   In reality they were leather craftsman, who made just about anything leather, from shoes to boots to saddles to sporrans and belts.

Alexander married secondly BET 1855-1860 in Ontario, Canada to Mary E PRESTON b: 1833 in Ontario, Canada.  They had the following children:

  1. Has No Children Noble William CUTHBERT b: 1860 in Wardsville, Middlesex, Ontario.  In 1881 he was working as a store clerk in Glencoe for George Fryer.  He is not found in later census records, however he may be the "William N. Cuthbert" in the 1901 census born 2 NOV 1857 in rural Ontario, living in Brantford, Brant County, Ontario working as a dentist and married to Jennet V. Cuthbert.
  2. Has No Children Robert CUTHBERT b: 1862 in Wardsville, Middlesex, Ontario.
  3. Has No Children Emelia Jane CUTHBERT b: 1864 in Wardsville, Middlesex, Ontario
  4. Has No Children Ellen CUTHBERT b: 1867 in Wardsville, Middlesex, Ontario
  5. Has No Children Ellena (Lena) CUTHBERT b: 1867 in Wardsville, Middlesex, Ontario
  6. Has No Children Edith CUTHBERT b: 1871 in Wardsville, Middlesex, Ontario.  She married Lemon Ocland and moved to Detroit, Michigan, USA.
  7. Has No Children Margaret CUTHBERT b: 5 OCT 1872 in Wardsville, Middlesex, Ontario
  8. Has Children John Alexander CUTHBERT b: 24 OCT 1874 in Wardsville, Middlesex, Ontario.  When John was younger he worked as a detail auto painter for the Ford Motor Company. He was apparently a fine artist and a jack-of-all-trades. He could also sew and made slippers and shoes from leather. It would appear he continued the family trade of leather work. He was also a singer, a fiddler, and a square-dance caller. In his later years he worked as a custodian at Belle Isle School then Gordon MacGregor School, both in Windsor.  John married on 13 JUN 1895 in Colchester North, Essex County, Ontario to Alice Blanche JOHNSON b: 21 SEP 1878 in Dunnville, Norfolk, Ontario (adopted).  They had the following children.  This branch is being researched by Marjorie Munroe.
    1. Has Children Zeta Irene CUTHBERT b: 24 FEB 1896 in Wardsville, Middlesex, Ontario.  She married on 110 OCT 1918 in Walkerville (Windsor), Essex County, Ontario to Archie MUNROE b: 15 SEP 1894 on the Munroe farm, Kilmartin, Mosa Township, Middlesex County, Ontario.  They had the following children:
      1. Has No Children Donald Cuthbert MUNROE b: Private
      2. Has No Children Keith Garfield MUNROE b: 7 MAY 1923 in Windsor, Essex County, Ontario.  He later moved to Michigan.
      3. Has Children Murray Bryant MUNROE b: 7 NOV 1926 in Windsor, Essex County, Ontario.  Murray married Living MCKEE.  They had the following children:
        1. Has No Children Living MUNROE
        2. Has No Children Living MUNROE
        3. Has No Children Living MUNROE
        4. Has No Children Living MUNROE
      4. Has No Children Donna Mae MUNROE b: Private
    2. Has No Children Vera Maude CUTHBERT b: 30 JAN 1898 in Wardsville, Middlesex, Ontario.  She married to Arthur BENNET b: ABT 1895.
    3. Has No Children Viva May CUTHBERT b: 27 MAY 1900 in Wardsville, Middlesex, Ontario.  She married Peter AMLIN.
  9. Has No Children Georgina CUTHBERT b: 1878 in Wardsville, Middlesex, Ontario

Many of the members of this family later moved to Windsor, Essex County, Ontario, just across the river from Detroit, Michigan, USA.  As most of these people have not been identified in later Canadian census records it is presumed that many of them may have moved to the USA.

Andrew Cuthbert and Margerie Anderson of Dresden, Kent County, Ontario

Andrew Cuthbert (born in 1828 in Port Gordon, Rathven, Banffshire, Scotland, not far from Elgin, Morayshire), and his family immigrated to British North America in the mid-19th century. The reasons for emigration are not known, but the early 19th century was a time of mass exodus from the rural coastal regions of northeast Scotland (and all over Scotland, for that matter).

Family tradition and a later obituary claim that Andrew came from Forres, Elgin, Scotland.  A later descendant travelled back to Forres in the 1980s looking for signs of the family and found little trace of the village of Forres itself, let alone the family, indicating that Forres may have suffered from an exodus like the Highland regions. Apparently he was able to locate an old saddle with the Cuthbert name stamped into it - the only remaining trace that our ancestors had ever been there....  At least that's how the family story goes. However the village of Forres exists and is well populated today, and census and parish records give no indication that Andrew ever lived anywhere near Forres, which might explain why the later traveler could find no evidence of his ancestor.

Andrew Cuthbert was born in ABT 21 MAR 1828 in Port Gordon, Rathven, Banffshire, Scotland.  In 1851 Andrew was apprenticing with George Milne, Master Shoemaker in Garmouth, Speymouth, Banff, Scotland.  Family tradition and a later obit claim that he married BET 1851-1852 to Margerie Anderson, presumably in Morayshire, but no record of their marriage has been found. There is an IGI marriage record for Andrew Cuthbert, 08 JUN 1851 Duffus, Moray, Scotland, to Marjory Shaw. There are only four Andrew Cuthberts in Banff and Moray in the 1851 census and the others have all been accounted for elsewhere. Therefore this marriage must be this Andrew. Which means that Marjory's surname has either been mis-transcribed in the IGI, or incorrectly recalled in his obit, or she may have been married previously, or she was Shaw-alias-Anderson.  She was born 1832 in Elginshire, Scotland.  No IGI records can be found for children to Andrew Cuthbert and Marjorie Shaw.  However family tradition claims they had two children:

  1. Has Children Alexander CUTHBERT b: 10 JUN 1852 in Forres, Elginshire, Moray, Scotland according to family tradition and a later obit, however no record of his birth has been found.
  2. Has No Children Unknown CUTHBERT.  The name and whereabouts of this child remains a mystery.

In 1856 (or 1854) Andrew Cuthbert, along with his his brother, his wife and children, left northeast Scotland, where his family had lived for at least 100 years, and they got on a boat bound for Canada.

We don't know how or why Andrew Cuthbert ended up in the city of London, Middlesex County, Ontario in the late 1850s, however it now seems likely that he was not actually *in* London, but *near* London -- probably staying with his distant cousins (from Branch 2 below) in Oxford County.  Andrew was only there for a few years. In 1865 Margerie died in London leaving just Andrew, his son Alexander and his other unknown child. Andrew and his children then moved to nearby Glencoe, Middlesex County, probably to live with his brother.

In 1851 Andrew was residing in Mosa, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada with his wife Marjory and son Alexander.  In 1871 Andrew was residing in Ward 1, London, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada with his second wife, Eliza, b 1828 in England.  They have a son, Charles, born 1859 in Ontario.  Andrew was employed as a cordwainer.  Alexander was not residing with them (though he would have been 19 and may have been working away from home.)  Andrew is shown in both 1861 and 1871 as born 1828 in Scotland.  He's the only Andrew Cuthbert in all of south-western Ontario, so despite the mismatched families between 1861 and 1871 it's certain that it's the same Andrew Cuthbert in both census records.  It seems most likely that Charles was probably from Eliza's previous marriage.  This would make Charles a step-brother of Alexander and seems likely to be the source of the elusive second brother tradition.  In 1881 Andrew was residing in Dresden, widowed, and living by himself, employed as a shoemaker. No record of Andrew and Eliza's marriage has been found, nor any record of her death.

Alexander Cuthbert and 1. Lydia Currie, 2. Mary Jane Prangley

It was in Glencoe that young Alexander Cuthbert met and married firstly in 1873 to Lydia Ann CURRIE of Glencoe.  She was born 1854 in Glencoe, Middlesex, Ontario as the daughter of Hugh Currie and Mary Ontwine of Detroit, Michigan, USA.  Alexander and Lydia moved to nearby Dresden where they had one son:

  1. Has No Children Hugh Bell CUTHBERT  b: 7 SEP 1875 in Dresden, Kent County, Ontario.  He became a brick mason and contractor and moved to Neepawa, McDonald, Manitoba.  Hugh married on 26 DEC 1900 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Ella WORTMAN.  They had no children.

"Hugh and Aunt Ella farmed in Humboldt SK after they got married on December 26, 1900 in Winnipeg.  They were married in Ella's parents' house on 255 Gunnell Street in Winnipeg.  Ella's family and mine came to Nova Scotia on June 3, 1766 from Pennsylvania and founded the city of Moncton, NB along with 6 other Germanic families."  (quote and photo of Hugh and Ella, c/o D. Wortman, Manitoba)

In 1901 he is found living in Neepawa with an Annie Cuthbert b:14 May 1877.  They are both shown as single and "lodgers" in the house of an unrelated person.  Annie does not match any known person in this family, nor is she known by D. Wortman's family.  Annie remains a mystery at this point.

It is believed that Lydia died in childbirth.  After which Alexander married secondly on 20 APR 1878 in Dawn Mills, Kent County, Ontario to Mary Jane PRANGLEY.  She was born 20 APR 1854 in Prangley homestead, Dawn Mills, Kent Co., Upper Canada Colony, British North America as the daughter of Charles Prangley, the local miller from the nearby village of Dawn Mills, and his wife Alice Ann Taylor. The Prangley family were one of the founding families of Dawn Mills and their story is told on the Prangley Family Page.

Alexander continued the family tradition of leatherwork as a saddle-maker and shoemaker in Dresden. He also worked as the local bailiff for which he earned a reputation as a very generous and forgiving man.

Alexander Cuthbert and Mary Jane Prangley had ten children:

BRANCH 2:
The Descendants of Peter Cuthbert and Elspet Dallas

This line is being researched by Mona Butz.  Photos courtesy of Mona Butz.

This family of Cuthberts descends from Patrick a.k.a. Peter Cuthbert who is believed, but not confirmed to be a son of John Cuthbert and Janet Humphrey, shown above.  Peter and his wife, Elspet Dallas, resided in the parish of Keith, Banffshire, Scotland, possibly on the farm of Bogmoor, about 2 miles west of Upper Dalachy and about 4 miles west of Port Gordon where their Cuthbert cousins resided.

Some of their children remained in the area, while some migrated southeast to the adjacent parish of Huntley, Aberdeenshire.  One branch, that of their son, Patrick/Peter James Cuthbert immigrated to Ontario, Canada nearby to their cousins above, and settled in Oxford County, just south of the city of Woodstock.  There is a Cuthbert Road in Oxford County located just south of the village of Sweaburg, two lines south of the Sweaburg Road.  It is presumed that Cuthbert Road is named after this family of Cuthberts and that they settled on that road.

Has Children Patrick/Peter CUTHBERT b: ABT 1761 in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  Peter is shown above as a son of John Cuthbert and Janet Humphrey.  Peter is not confirmed as a child of that family, but there is no other Cuthbert family residing in the area of Keith and Buckie at this time and he fits onomastically, chronologically and geographically, and there is no other possible family nearby with which he could be associated. Add to these facts, the additional fact that Peter's descendants immigrated to south-western Ontario along with other descendants of John Cuthbert and Janet Humphrey then it seems very reasonable to suggest that John Cuthbert and Janet Humphrey are his parents.  Peter is found in the 1841 census in Keith as an 80 year old widower. However, the 1841 census was rounded down to the next five year age, so he could have been as old as 84. Family records indicate that Peter was born in Huntly and lived in the towns of Dufftown, Newmill, Buckie, Portsoy and Keith, and that he was a baker.  Peter married on 20 OCT 1781 in Botriphnie, Banffshire, Scotland to Elspeth DALLAS/DOLLAS b: ABT 1761 in Scotland.  They had the following children:

  1. Has No Children Janet CUTHBERT b: 03 OCT 1782 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland
  2. Has No Children John CUTHBERT b: ABT 27 DEC 1783 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland
  3. Has Children Patrick/Peter James CUTHBERT b: ABT 31 OCT 1785 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland.  Peter married Isabel SMITH and had descendants.
    1. His descendants are presented below.
  4. Has No Children Mary CUTHBERT b: ABT 18 APR 1787 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland
  5. Has No Children Alexander CUTHBERT b: 17 FEB 1789 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland.  It is believed that Alexander never married nor had children.  In 1851, Alexander was residing at Backmoor (Bogmoor) Farm, Keith, Banffshire, Scotland with his brother William and 20 year old niece Margaret. There is also a 5 month old Margaret Brown, born in Keith, Banff, described as "brother's daughter".  She has not been identified.
  6. Has Children Elspet CUTHBERT b: ABT 24 NOV 1790 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland.  Elspet's marriage record shows her as daughter of Peter Cuthbert, merchant in Keith.  Elspet married on 19 AUG 1816 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland to John ALLARDYCE b: ABT 1790 in Scotland.  They had the following children:
    1. Has No Children Elizabeth ALLARDYCE b: ABT 18 FEB 1817 in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
    2. Has No Children Alexander ALLARDYCE b: ABT 26 JUN 1818 in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
    3. Has No Children Mary ALLARDYCE b: ABT 04 FEB 1821 in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
    4. Has No Children John Walker ALLARDYCE b: ABT 15 FEB 1823 in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
  7. Has Children James CUTHBERT b: ABT 04 SEP 1792 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland.  James is suspected (but not confirmed) to be the James Cuthbert who married on 23 JUN 1822 in Keith, Banff, Scotland and double-registered on 25 JUL 1822 in Ruthven, Moray, Scotland to Isobel FORSYTH and had the following children:
    1. Has No Children Elspet CUTHBERT b: 04 MAY 1823 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland
    2. Has No Children Jean CUTHBERT b: 03 OCT 1824 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland
  8. Has Children William CUTHBERT b: ABT 27 APR 1794 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland.  William is found in 1851 residing with his brother Alexander and shown with the following daughter:
    1. Has No Children Margaret CUTHBERT b: 1831 in Banff, Banffshire, Scotland
  9. Has No Children Elizabeth CUTHBERT b: ABT 28 APR 1796 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland

Peter James Cuthbert and Isabel Smith

Has Children Patrick/Peter James CUTHBERT b: ABT 31 OCT 1785 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland, shown above as the son of Patrick Cuthbert and Elspeth Dallas.  Peter and his wife Isabel began their family at the settlement of New Mill in Keith, Banffshire.  Peter is recorded as being a merchant and a baker and seems to have begun to travel back and forth between Keith and the adjacent parish of Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  Several of their children are recorded as being born in Huntley, while still being baptized back in Keith.  Their last son, Andrew, is recorded as having been born on a farm named Raemurrack, near the village of Cairnie, halfway between the towns of Huntley and Keith. Peter immigrated in 1836 from Keith, Banffshire, Scotland to Oxford County, Ontario, Canada, sailing on the ship Hercules. He was preceded first by his son Alexander and secondly by his son James.  Peter married on 11 FEB 1809 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland to Isabell SMITH b: 1790 in Scotland.  They had the following extensive family:

  1. Has Children James CUTHBERT b: 15 NOV 1810 in New Mill, Keith, Banffshire, Scotland
  2. Has Children Alexander CUTHBERT b: 28 JAN 1813 in New Mill, Keith, Banffshire, Scotland
  3. Has Children Peter CUTHBERT b: 13 AUG 1815 in Insch, Aberdeen, Scotland
  4. Has Children John S. CUTHBERT b: 26 NOV 1817 in Aberdeen, Scotland
  5. Has Children William CUTHBERT b: ABT 22 JUL 1820 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland
  6. Has Children Beatrice CUTHBERT b: 12 FEB 1823 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland
  7. Has Children Charles CUTHBERT b: 30 JUL 1825 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland
  8. Has Children George CUTHBERT b: 08 AUG 1827 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland
  9. Has Children Robert CUTHBERT b: 22 MAR 1830 in Huntly parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
  10. Has No Children Ernest CUTHBERT b: ABT 1832 in Scotland.  Ernest is listed in family records but his birth date is not given and is only estimated here. He has not been found in public records. Furthermore, Ernest is an English name, not Scots.  It seems possible, if not likely, that he has been confused in family records with his brother Andrew.
  11. Has No Children Andrew CUTHBERT b: 13 DEC 1833 in Cairnie by Huntly, Aberdeen, Scotland.  Andrew died in infancy in 1835 in Raemurrack Woodland Farm beside the "Den of Pitlurg", Cairnie by Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Peter had such a large number of descendants that each line is accounted for separately below.

Descendants of James Cuthbert

Has Children James CUTHBERT b: 15 NOV 1810 in New Mill, Keith, Banffshire, Scotland, shown above as the eldest son of Peter James Cuthbert and Isabell Smith.  James was the second of his family to immigrate to Canada. He came in 1835 and was preceded earlier the same year by his brother Alexander and followed in 1836 by the rest of the family. James married ABT 1840 in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada to Mary Prudence COVENTRY b: BET 1805 AND 1814 in England.  Her exact birth and parents have not been identified.James and Mary had the following children:

  1. Has No Children Theresa CUTHBERT b: ABT 1842 in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  Theresa/Thirza is found residing with her parents in 1851. In 1881 she was residing with her parents and brother James and is mistakenly recorded as James' wife. Later census records and her death record show her as significantly younger than she truly was. It is presumed that she lied about her age. The 1851 census which shows her as being 9 years old is presumed to be the more reliable. It's also possible that there were two sisters with the same name and the earlier Theresa died ca 1852 and the second was born about the same time and named after her deceased sister. In which case the later records might be giving the correct age.
  2. Has No Children Edmund CUTHBERT b: 01 AUG 1843 in Oxford West Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  Edmund worked as a white-wash sprayer and is believed to have never married nor had children.
  3. Has Children Isabel CUTHBERT b: DEC 1847 in Oxford East Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  Edmund worked as a white-wash sprayer and is believed to have never married nor had children.  Isabel married on 22 SEP 1868 in Oxford, Ontario, Canada to Joseph NIXON b: OCT 1831 in Petersville (West London), Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada.
    1. Has No Children Edmond E NIXON b: 1870 in London Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada
    2. Has No Children Charles Cuthbert NIXON b: 1873 in London Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada
    3. Has No Children Mary Jessie NIXON b: 18 MAR 1874 in London Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada
    4. Has No Children Hester NIXON b: 16 APR 1875 in London Township, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada
    5. Has No Children Ethel L NIXON b: 15 JUL 1878 in Petersville (London), Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada
    6. Has No Children Isabella M NIXON b: 02 DEC 1880 in Oxford Street, Petersville (London), Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada
    7. Has No Children Florence G NIXON b: 1881 in Petersville (London), Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada
  4. Has Children James CUTHBERT b: 1851 in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  In 1881 James was residing in Ingersoll with his parents and sister Theresa. However Theresa's age is incorrect and she is shown as James' wife. It's possible, but unlikely, that James married a woman named Theresa and that the woman with him in 1881 is not his sister. James has not been found in 1891 or later census records.  James is believed, but not confirmed to have had the following son by an unknown woman:
    1. Has No Children Frederick CUTHBERT, b 5 AUG 1895 in Ingersoll, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  Frederick is identified only in his WWI attestation papers in which he is described as the nephew of Edmund Cuthbert in Ingersoll. As Edmund had only one brother, James, then it would seem that Frederick must be a son of James (unless Frederick and James had another brother not yet found.)

Descendants of Alexander Cuthbert

Has Children Alexander CUTHBERT b: 28 JAN 1813 in New Mill, Keith, Banffshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of Peter James Cuthbert and Isabell Smith.  Alexander's baptism was witnessed by Alexander Smith in New Mill and Elspeth Cuthbert in New Keith.

Alexander was the first of this branch to immigrate to Canada. He came in 1835 and was followed by his brother James and then in 1836 by the remainder of his extended family.

A record prepared by Effa (Cuthbert) Sippel lists six (sic - four) unnamed children who died of ships' fever (typhus) thought to be brought by a hired hand of the Cuthberts. These children have been identified below.
Alexander and Jane began a new family sometime after 1851.

  5. Has Children Mary Jane CUTHBERT b: 1853 in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  Mary Jane married on 25 APR 1878 in Oxford West Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada to James Counter NORSWORTHY b: 02 JUL 1846 in Widdicombe, , Devon, England, son of John Norsworthy and Mary Countyer.  James and Mary Jane had the following children:

In 1901 and 1911 James is shown as head of the same household with his widowed mother and sisters still residing with him. No wife is shown nor children, so it is presumed that James never married.

In 1881 Peter is shown as widowed and residing with his brother Robert and family. In 1901 Peter is shown as widowed and residing with his brother, Robert. Family tradition gives Peter's date of immigration as 1836, but census records give it as 1837.  Peter is presumed to have married to Mary Jane CHAMBERS b: 1831 in Canada, although no record of their marriage has been found.  Mary's birth family is not known.  Peter and Mary had the following children:

  1. Has No Children John CUTHBERT b: 1854 in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  John is recorded in family records. He is not found in public records and may have died young.

CUTHBERT b: 26 NOV 1817 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of Peter James Cuthbert and Isabell Smith.  John married on 17 JAN 1845 in Brock District, Ontario, Canada to Catherine CUNNINGHAM b: 06 MAR 1831 in USA, daughter of Elias Cunningham and Thoda Crannal.  Sources conflict over Catherine's birth place. The majority give "Ontario" (and specifically "Woodstock" in one case) while one gives Scotland (which is presumed to be an error for her husband's place of birth) and in later census records two of her children say Catherine was born in Pennsylvania, while another says Missouri. Given that her next youngest brother, Hiram, was born in DEC 1832 in New York, USA, and her younger siblings appear to have been born all in Norwich Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada then it seems most likely that Catherine was born in the USA and came to Canada as a toddler. Whether she was born in New York, like her brother, or Pennsylvania or Missouri as her children allege, is not known. Her birth family has not been found in earlier American census records.  John and Catherine had the following children:

  1. Has No Children Jane CUTHBERT b: ABT 1854 in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  Jane's existence is not confirmed. She is listed in Mona's notes without any dates, but is listed as the first-born child. Her dates as shown here are merely a suggestion based on chronology. Jane has not been found in any public records. However it is likely that her parents probably did have a child around this time. So Jane's existence is reasonable.
  2. Has No Children William CUTHBERT b: 1856 in Oxford East Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  William is presumed to have died your prior to the birth of his same-named brother in 1869.
  3. Has No Children Marion CUTHBERT b: 24 FEB 1857 in Oxford East Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada

  7. Has No Children Janice Beith CUTHBERT b: 1865 in Oxford East Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  Janice's middle name comes from her grandmother's surname and, in Gaelic, means "life". Janice and her husband Charles have not been found in later census records. No children have been found from their marriage.  Janice married on 28 DEC 1892 in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada to Charles Edgar BURRELL b: 1865 in Ontario, Canada, son of Charles and Rebecca Burrell.

  11. Has No Children Albert CUTHBERT b: 1871 in Oxford East Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada

Descendants of Beatrice Cuthbert

Has Children Beatrice CUTHBERT b: 12 FEB 1823 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland, shown above as a daughter of Peter Cuthbert and Isabell Smith.  Beatrice was baptised with the name "Beatrice" but in all later records she is shown as "Elisabeth". Her death record confirms that Beatrice and Elisabeth are the same person. It would appear that Beatrice is another Scots substitute name for Elisabeth, or vice versa, perhaps due to their common reduction to "Betty". In 1881, Elizabeth was residing with her family in Oxford West. Her brother George Cuthbert and nephew Robert Cuthbert were also residing with them.  Beatrice married in 1839 in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada to William James COVENTRY b: 1810 in England.  William's birth family has not been identified but it seems likely that he is related to Mary Prudence Coventry who married Beatrice's brother James Cuthbert.  Beatrice/Elizabeth and William had the following children:

  2. Has No Children Jane COVENTRY b: 1863 in Oxford West Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada

Descendants of Charles Cuthbert

Has Children Charles CUTHBERT b: 30 JUL 1825 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of Peter Cuthbert and Isabell Smith.  In 1851 Charles was living with his first wife who is shown only as "E. Cuthbert, b 1827 in Ontario" and Charles' brother William. Gravestone records confirm her name to be Eliza Malvin.  The informant at Charles' death was his son-in-law, E W Lick.  Charles married firstly on 23 NOV 1848 in Oxford East Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada to Eliza MULVIN b: 1827 in York (Toronto), York County, Ontario, Canada, daughter of William Mulvin and Mary Chambers, and sister of Harriet Mulvin who married Charles' brother, Robert Cuthbert, below.  There is no record of any children from this marriage.  Eliza died on 03 APR 1854 in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  Charles married secondly on 10 JAN 1866 in Norwich West, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada to Catherine CORNWALL b: 1841 in Norwich, Oxford, Ontario, Canada.  Her birth family is unknown.  Charles and Catherine had the following children:

    1. Has No Children Vernon Cuthbert LICK b: 03 MAY 1895 in Oxford West Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada

Descendants of George Cuthbert

Has Children George CUTHBERT b: 08 AUG 1827 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of Peter Cuthbert and Isabell Smith.  George is found in 1881 residing in Oxford West, shown as widowed and with only his 9 year old Robert Cuthbert. The rest of his family has not been found in 1881.  George is presumed to have married to Agnes CAMPBELL b: 1837 in Scotland, although no record of their marriage has been found.  Her birth family has not been identified. George and Agnes had the following family.  Judging by the dates of birth of their children, George and Agnes were...ahem...rather "active and regular" in their affections towards each other.  I've never seen another example of a family that had eleven children in thirteen years without any twins!  Agnes died in 1873, shortly after the birth of their eleventh child.

  1. Has No Children Peter CUTHBERT b: 21 MAR 1859 in Oxford West Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  Peter moved to Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, USA in 1896 and by 1910 was still a bachelor.  It is presumed that he never married nor had children.

  7. Has Children Elizabeth/Edith L CUTHBERT b: 22 JUL 1865 in Oxford West Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  Edith married on 14 MAR 1888 in Woodstock, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada to Hilliard C COULTON b: 08 DEC 1862 in Totnes, Perth County, Ontario, Canada, son of Richard Coulton and Mary Douglas.  Edith and Hilliard had the following children:

  9. Has No Children Agnes CUTHBERT b: 05 MAY 1867 in Stratford, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  Agnes married on 13 JUL 1885 in Oxford, Ontario, Canada to James Alexander SUTHERLAND b: 1864 in Woodstock, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada, son of Alexander and Bessie Sutherland.  Ontario birth records show three children for Agnes and James, however, quite strangely, this couple and their children are utterly and completely absent in the 1891, 1901, and 1911 censuses. I cannot comprehend how they could be missed on three consecutive censuses. As such, nothing more is known about this family.  Agnes and James had the following children:
    1. Percy Alexander SUTHERLAND b: 1 JUN 1886 in Woodstock, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.
    2. Bessie Precillia SUTHERLAND b: 9 APR 1888 in Woodstock, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.
    3. Clara Louise SUTHERLAND b 4 MAR 1892 in Woodstock, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.
  10. Has Children George Alexander CUTHBERT b: 22 AUG 1868 in Oxford West Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  George is presumed to have married to Eunice Ellen BARNETT b: 23 JUL 1870 in Ontario, Canada, daughter of Robert Barnett and Nancy Moor, although no record of their marriage has been found.  They had the following children and moved to East Jordan Village, South Arm, Charlevoix, Michigan, USA just prior to 1899, but appear to have returned to Canada at a later date.
    1. Has Children Ainsley Wilford CUTHBERT b: MAR 1892 in Currie's Crossing, Oxford West Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.  Ainsley married to Olive Felicia Meuser, b: 1893 in Oxford West Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada, daughter of William Meuser and Ann Kent Sleeman.  Ainsley and Olive had the following child:

The Origin of the Cuthberts in Banff and Moray

THIS SECTION IS TO BE UPDATED.  The suggestion that John and Alexander are sons of Alexander and Beatrix Cuthbert in Inverness is now withdrawn.  There is a line of Cuthberts in Inverness who were shoemakers who migrated to Nairn.  They are much better candidates for the ancestors of this line.

Above we noted that the earliest verifiable ancestor of the preceding family was John Cuthbert who was born about 1715 in Scotland and who resided Keith, Banffshire.  John's birth record has not been found.  Based solely on onomastics it is suggested that his father's name was probably Alexander.  However, this is by no means certain.

The earliest record of John Cuthbert is his marriage on 13 AUG 1742 in Bellie, Moray, Scotland to Janet Humphrey.  There is an Alexander Cuthbert, contemporary to John, found in local parish records who fits chronologically as a brother to John.  The children of John and Alexander represent the earliest occurrences of the surname Cuthbert in the Keith, Bellie, and Rathven areas.  There are no records of any Cuthberts having resided in the area prior to John's marriage in 1742 in Bellie and Alexander's marriage in Rathven also in 1742, even though local parish records date back more than 50 years prior.  We can state with certainty that these two men and their descendants represent the only Cuthberts in the area prior to 1800.  As such, it seems reasonable to suggest that John and Alexander came from the same family of origin and, as they appear to be close in age, it seems reasonable to suggest that they could be brothers, and further, that they were born outside of the Keith, Bellie, and Rathven areas.  Thus, we can construct the following tentative family of origin.

"Alexander" or "John" CUTHBERT is suggested to have been born about 1680 somewhere in northeast Scotland.  His wife is unknown.  He is suggested (by onomastics only) to be the father of:

  1. John CUTHBERT, b. ABT 1715 in northeast Scotland.  A tentative matching baptism has been found on 19 AUG 1713 in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland as the son of Alexander and Betty Cuthbert.  John is believed to have moved to Keith as a child or youth.  He married on 13 AUG 1742 in Bellie, Morayshire, Scotland to Janet HUMPHREY.  Their descendants are presented above.
  2. Alexander CUTHBERT, b. ABT 1718 in northeast Scotland.  He is believed to have moved to Keith as a child or youth.  He is found in local parish records and appears to be ages with John Cuthbert.  On this basis only, it is tentatively suggested that they could be brothers.  Alexander married on 23 NOV 1742 in Bellie, Moray, Scotland to Margaret SIMPSON.  They had the following children:
    1. Janet CUTHBERT, bap. 16 SEP 1743 in Rathven, Moray, Scotland.
    2. John CUTHBERT, bap. 15 MAY 1745 in Rathven, Moray, Scotland.
    3. James CUTHBERT, bap. 23 DEC 1747 in Bellie, Moray, Scotland.
    4. Margaret CUTHBERT, b. 1753

As noted above, a tentative matching baptism record has been found for the birth of John Cuthbert on 19 AUG 1713 in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland as the son of Alexander Cuthbert, merchant in Inverness and his wife Betty Cuthbert.  Witnesses to this baptism include: Mr John Cuthbert of Castelhill, Mr John John Cuthbert, John McBean of Davechgarrioch, John Gilmore glowr(?).  Their family can be reconstructed as follows:

Alexander CUTHBERT and Beatrix/Bettie/Betta CUTHBERT (no marriage record) in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland

  1. John CUTHBERT, bap. 19 AUG 1713 in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland.  It is suggested that he could be the John Cuthbert who married Janet Humphrey and resided in Keith, Banff, Scotland. (Baptism: 19 AUG 1713 Alex'r Cuthbert mert (merchant) in Inverness and Betta (or Bettie) his spous had a child bapt. by Mr Robert Baillie called John. Mr John Cuthbert of Castelhill, Mr John John Cuthbert, John McBean of Davechgarrioch*, John Gilmore glowr(?) wits.)
  2. Unknown (Alexander?) CUTHBERT, bap. NOV 1715 in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland.  The IGI gives no forename to this Cuthbert son.  Presumably the original parish record is illegible or incomplete.  Primary sources have not yet been consulted.  It is suggested that he could be the Alexander Cuthbert who married Margaret Simpson and resided in Rathven, Moray, Scotland (shown above).

  3. Donald CUTHBERT, bap. 21 JAN 1718 in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland
  4. James CUTHBERT, bap. 5 MAY 1719 in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland.
  5. William CUTHBERT, bap. 27 SEP 1720 in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland
  6. Unknown CUTHBERT, bap. 4 MAY 1722 in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland
  7. Janet CUTHBERT, bap. 14 JUL 1723 in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland
  8. Mary CUTHBERT, bap. 13 MAY 1726 in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland
  9. Unknown CUTHBERT, bap. NOV 1728 in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland

It turns out that this family happens to be the birth family of The Hon. Capt. James Cuthbert of the Royal Navy (4th child above).  Capt. James Cuthbert is recorded as a descendant of the Cuthberts of Castlehill.  Their family history is shown below.  It is from this family that our argument will be made that our Cuthberts likely descend from the Cuthberts of Castlehill.

With increasing tentativeness, two possible births can be identified for Alexander:

  1. Alexander CUTHBERT, bap. 28 JAN 1679 in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland, son of John Cuthbert (with no mother given).
  2. Alexander CUTHBERT, bap. 27 MAR 1679 in Inverness, Inverness, Scotland, son of John Cuthbert (with no mother given).  (27 of March 1679
The said day Master John Cuthbert ~~ (esq?) had a child baptized named (Alexander). Alexander Cuthbert leat (late?) provost, Alex'r Ross baillie, Alexander McIntosh of Farr, Alexander Chisolme Sherriff Depute, Mr Alexander McDuff(?) minister witnesses.)

In 1851 Andrew and Ann were living at 1 Perthside, Bellie, Moray, next door to the family of William Geddes and Margaret Thomson. Andrew married on 13 APR 1845 in Boharm and Bellie, Moray, Scotland to Ann THOMSON b: 1816 in Keith, Banff, Scotland.

Elisha Cuthbert

Is Canadian actress Elisha Cuthbert related to our Cuthberts?  In a classic star-struck genealogically naive fashion, I can't help asking the question.  The answer is unknown at this time.  What is known about Elisha is: Elisha Ann Cuthbert, b 30 NOV 1982 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Later moved to and grew up in Greenfield Park, Longeueuil (south Montreal), Quebec, daughter of Kevin (automotive design engineer) and Patricia Cuthbert (homemaker).  Siblings Jonathan and Lee-Ann. If/as information becomes available as to her ancestry, I will account for it here.

Legend

Has Children = This person has known descendants.

ABT = "about" and is used in three ways:

  1. Where it precedes a precise date of birth, such as "ABT 3 DEC 1855", then it means that the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her exact date of birth is unknown.

  2. Where it precedes a semi-precise date of birth with the month only given, such as "ABT DEC 1855", then that means that the birth is recorded in the civil birth registrations for the quarter ending with that month.  Thus the person's birth was registered sometime between the beginning of October 1855 and the end of December 1855, but no baptism record has been found nor any more precise birth record.

  3. Where it precedes a year only, such as "ABT 1855", then it means that there is no information on the person's birth date at all and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime around 1855.
