Introduction

Welcome to the Prangley family page of my family history website.  This page covers the known descendants of the original Prangleys from Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  As the Prangley surname is one of those very few surnames that is believed to have a unique origin then it is believed that all Prangleys are related to each other.  In the course of researching my own family's Prangley ancestors I have run across several other researchers online.  We have all found our common Prangley roots in the parish of Corsley, Wiltshire, England, which is believed to be the place of origin for the Prangley surname.  I am attempting to catalogue the common origins of the Prangley families from all over the world.  So far we have found descendant branches in England, Canada, the United States, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

This website will not follow all the descendants of the Prangleys all over the world as that would become just too overwhelming.  However, I will attempt to follow the various descendant lines of the original Corsley Prangleys as far as the year 1900 (or so).  So far we have been able to account for nearly 90% of the Prangleys found in the Latter Day Saints' International Genealogical Index and 1881 Census Transcriptions.  If you wish to contribute your research please contact me.

The Origin Of The Surname Prangley

The surname Prangley appears to be of singular and unique origin from the mid-17th century in the area of the parish of Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  So far as the fellow researchers of this page have been able to determine, all known Prangleys can trace their origins to the Corsley area.  It is suggested below that the name may have earlier Germanic origins, however none of the theories below have been verified.  The following theories have been suggested for the origin of the surname Prangley:

1. Prangley may come from the word Perang, a woodcutting instrument. (Suggested by Mr. Percy Prangley 1974)

2. Prangley may come from the Anglo Saxon "pronged ley/leigh".  "When I was at university in Bristol in 1956, Dr. Basil Cottle, the author of the Penguin Book of English Surnames taught me. In a class of 40 he was able to tell the origin of every name but mine! He hazarded 'a family that lived in a prong shaped field [ley]".  Adding that he wasn’t sure that the surname had British origins. (According to John Prangley of England).  The name doesn’t appear in Cottle's book ‘The Penguin Dictionary of Surnames’.

3. Prangley may come from the Germanic surname Pranger.  (Suggested by Tony Prangley following his visit to Germany 1985)

4. Roger Prangley of Germany sent along the following explanation: "Prangley was earlier probably a German "double-barreled" name. Prang is a name which stems from North Germany. The meaning of it comes from the lower German (dialect) word and means aggressor or fighter. The name of Prang is widely distributed throughout German speaking Europe. The 2nd name, Ley, stems possibly from Leyen which means "slate" in Rheinish dialect and meant therefore "Slater" or it could possibly be from Eley which in turn comes from the name Eligius and translated meant "the chosen one". The surname Ley is also broadly distributed here. The combination of the two names would also explain the uniqueness, possibly only an immediate family at the time" (our ancestors).

5. Another suggestion which has been put forward for the origin of the surname Prangley, recognizing that most of the earlier records of this family spelled the name with a final "n" sound, as in Pranglin, Pranglen, Prangling, and Pranglyn.  This would indicate that the "ley" ending may not be original, but may simply be a lazy dropping of the final "n" sound.  If the concluding "n" is an older ending than the "ley" then the "ley/leigh" explanations above would no longer apply.  A non-British (perhaps Germanic) origin for this geographically isolated surname would require the existence of an eponymous immigrant who settled in the Corlsey area and became the progenitor of the English form of this name.  Even though no such person has been found, it is still theoretically possible.  But where did such a person come from? And why settle in Corsley?  There is nothing particularly unique about Corsley that would explain an immigrant settling there.  When one examines the geographic distribution of the similar surname, Prangnell, one sees that its geographic distribution surrounds Corsley, nearly on all sides, but is distinctly absent in the Corsley/Frome area.  Given that the earlier form of Prangley may more authentically carry an "n" sound in its final syllable, it must seriously be considered that Prangley, possibly evolving from Pranglin, may simply be a local dialectic variation on the much older and well-known surname of Prangnell.  This explanation is preferred by this author, but, admittedly, is not widely supported by the fellow researchers of this site.  However, some contemporary Prangnell researchers do acknowledge Prangley as a Prangnell variant.

Corsley, Wiltshire, England

Corsley is a small town in the county of Wiltshire in England.  Wiltshire is home to the infamous Stonehenge.  Corsley is located near the centre of the ancient kingdom of Wessex, in western Wiltshire only one mile from the border of Somersetshire, halfway between Frome, Somerset and Warminster, Wiltshire. 

The population of Corsley in 1801 was 1400.  It reached its highest in 1831 at 1729 and lowest in 1971 at only 650.

"At the making of Domesday Book most of Corsley was included within the great royal manor of Warminster, and even after it had been granted away by Henry II the church of Corsley was parochially dependent on Warminster until the 15th century. (Footnote 1) The common fields of Cley and Chedlanger were shared by the tenants of Corsley and Warminster until their inclosure in 1783.

"Corsley lay within the bounds of Selwood Forest in the Middle Ages, and much of the parish must have consisted of woodland which was only gradually cleared. This has left its mark on the pattern of settlement. Apart from the village of Chapmanslade, the parish contains only small hamlets and isolated farms. Some of the hamlets, such as Huntenhull, Corsley, and the three Whitbournes, are of early origin, while Longhedge, Corsley Heath and Lane End are all groups of cottages built on former common land, probably from the 16th century onwards.  In spite of this Corsley was clearly well populated in the 14th century.   In 1377 there were 128 poll-tax payers in Corsley, the third largest number in the hundred, and 49 at Whitbourne.  In the 16th century the parish was apparently well-populated and prosperous.  The population of 1,412 in 1801 increased to 1,729 by 1831, in spite of the emigration of 200 people to America since 1821. After that it declined steadily, owing to the decay of the cloth industry and to the increasing preponderance of dairy-farming, to 729 in 1931. In 1934 194 people lived in the part of Corsley transferred to the new parish of Chapmanslade, while only 49 lived in the area gained from Warminster. In spite of that the population had risen to 745 by 1951.

"Corsley has always looked to both Frome and Warminster as market towns. Much of its soil is suitable for either arable or pastoral farming, and the amount given to each has varied considerably. (Footnote 24) The cloth trade flourished chiefly in the 18th century but survived until the 1840's." (ref)

The Prangleys of Corsley, Wiltshire, England

The surname Prangley appears for the first time in any known records initially in the parish of Corsley, Wiltshire, England in mid-1600s.  The burial of Gorge Prangly in 1688 indicates that his father was in the wool trade.  Early indications show that the wool trade linked Wiltshire with Northern Germany.  Before 1669 there are no recorded burials of any Prangley (or variant) in the Corsley records. Between 1608 –1669 there are no recorded marriages of any Prangley (or variant) in the Corsley records. The earliest recorded birth of a Prangley in Wiltshire is Robert Prangling, son of George, 24 AUG 1672 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  This would seem to indicate that the name Prangley arrived in Corsley sometime before 1669, probably in the period 1640-1669. The question is from where did the Prangleys come?

So far as we have been able to determine, it appears that the earliest generations of Prangleys are as shown below.  Where the phrase "is believed to be" is used then the reader should understand that these early relationships are not proven but represent the combined opinions of the researchers listed below as we jointly try to reconcile the scraps of known data.

In the 1766 Land Tax records for Frome, Somerset, England there is a residence recorded as "Prangley House", but not occupied by anyone of the surname Prangley.  Presumably the residence was named after an earlier occupant or the owner.  This would seem to indicate that at least one branch of Prangleys was in Frome prior to 1766.

The Theoretical Family of Origin

The Descendants of Gorge Pranglin, ca. 1600 in Corsley

Gorge PRANGLIN was born about 1600.  He is of uncertain origin.  His wife is unknown.  It is believed that he was the father of:

1. William PRANGLIN b: ABT 1620 in England who is believed to have married a woman named Elce.  We know of no children from this marriage.
2. Gorge PRANGLY b: ABT 1630 in England who married an unknown woman.  He also worked in the wool industry and died on 20 JUN 1688.  He is believed to have been the father of:
   1. George PRANGLYN b: ABT 1668 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  His wife is unknown.  He is believed to be the father of:
      1. Hannah PRANGLIN b: ABT 16 JUN 1690 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
      2. George PRANGLIN b: ABT 13 APR 1693 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England who married on 19 JAN 1713/14 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Joan SINGER (of unknown origin).  Their suggested descendants are shown below as BRANCH #1 (below).
      3. John PRANGLIN b: ABT 1696 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England who is believed to have married on 23 DEC 1722 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Anna GRATWOOD (of unknown origin).  It is believed they were the parents of the following children.  However as these children are only shown as "of John Pranglin" it is also possible that they could be children of John, son of Robert (#3 below).
         1. Elizabeth PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: 15 SEP 1723 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
         2. George PRANGLEY b: ABT 20 MAR 1724/25 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  George is recorded in the Corsley records as "George, son of John Prangley". It is not certain that he is the son of THIS John Prangley, however this seems to be the most likely place for him. The other possibility is that he is the son of John Pranglin, b: 1702, son of Robert Prangling, b:1672 (below). But the name "George" seems to favour the present branch. George married on 13 OCT 1744 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Sarah STREATTON of unknown origin.  It is believed they were the parents of:
            1. Elizabeth PRANGLEY b: 1745 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England, of whom nothing is known.  She may be the Elizabeth Prangley who was sentenced to the prison colony in New South Wales, Australia in 1791.
         3. William PRANGLEY b: ABT 30 AUG 1730 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
         4. Hannah PRANGLEY b: ABT 28 DEC 1732 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
   2. Thomas PRANGLEY/PRANGLEN b: ABT 1670 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  His wife is unknown.  He is believed to have been the father of:
      1. Thomas PRANGLEY b: 7 JAN 1693/94 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  He is believed to be the patriarch of BRANCH #4  (below).  This is suggested based on onomastics and the fact that no other likely Thomas Prangley has been identified.  It is possible that the Thomas Prangley of Branch #4 could be from a different family with no birth record.

George PRANGLIN b: 13 APR 1693 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  His birth is shown above in the Family of Origin.  He married on 19 JAN 1713/14 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Joan SINGER (of unknown origin).  They had the following children: 

1. Joseph PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: ABT 3 JUL 1715 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  It is believed that this is the Joseph who married Mary PRANGLEY b: ABT 1723 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  Their descendants are shown just below. 
2. Ledeor PRANGLEY b: ABT 5 MAR 1719/20 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
3. Edie PRANGLEY (Edey Pranglin) b: 12 SEP 1724 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  She married on 28 JUN 1744 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Jeremiah YOUNG b: ABT 1720 in England.  They had the following children:

Joseph PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: ABT 3 JUL 1715 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  It is believed that this is the Joseph who married Mary PRANGLEY b: ABT 1723 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England and had the following children.  It is not known if Mary's birth name was also Prangley, or just her married name.  These children are shown to be the children of "Joseph and Mary Prangley".  It is not certain that the Joseph born in 1715 is the father of the children shown here, however no other Joseph Prangley (or derivative) has otherwise been identified.  Thus, in the absence of any other contender, it is suggested that he is the father of the children shown here, however these relationships are not verified.

Job PRANGLEY b: ABT 31 JAN 1740/41 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  Job married firstly on 24 SEP 1771 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Betty UDELL b: ABT 1740 in England.  Betty Udell (nee West) was formerly the wife of David Udell (Bap 3/6/1739, Corsley). They married in Corsley on 24 April 1763. David died 8 Aug 1770 (aged about 31) leaving Betty his widow. They had only one recorded child Sarah Udell (Bap 15/12/1765).  Job and Betty had the following children:
   1. James PRANGLEY b: ABT 1 MAY 1774 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  He died as a child.
   2. Hannah PRANGLEY b: ABT 19 MAR 1775 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England

   He married secondly BET 1775 AND 1780 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to a woman named Marey, whose surname is unknown.  They had the following child:

4. Paul PRANGLEY b: ABT 16 APR 1749 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  Paul married firstly on 3 AUG 1772 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Betty UDELL b: ABT 30 OCT 1743 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England, daughter of Andrew Udell.  They had the following children:
   1. Benjamin PRANGLEY b: ABT 16 MAY 1773 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  He lived in Leigh's Green, Corsley, Wiltshire and worked as a sawyer, however in the 1851 census he is recorded as a blind pauper with his second wife, Mary.  It is believed that he did not have children by his second wife.  He married firstly to HANNAH b: 1771 in England.  Benjamin and Hannah had the following children:
      1. Mary PRANGLEY b: ABT 5 MAY 1799 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
      2. Elizabeth PRANGLEY b: ABT 24 JAN 1802 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
      3. Hannah PRANGLEY b: ABT 27 JUL 1806 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  It is strongly believed that this is the Hannah Prangley who married on 24 APR 1825 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Benjamin HYATT b: 1808 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  They lived in Leigh's Green, Corsley next door to Benjamin and Hannah Prangley.  The 1861 census shows her living next to James and Amelia Prangley, who are residing at Corsley Wood.  Hannah and Benjamin had the following children:
         1. Frederick HYATT b: ABT 20 NOV 1825 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  He married in 1857 in Chelsea, England to Emma GIRL b: ABT 1830 in England.  They had the following children:
            1. William John HYATT b: MAR 1855 in Wandsworth, London, Middlesex, England
         2. Fanny HYATT b: ABT 12 OCT 1828 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  She died as a child.
         3. Ezra HYATT b: ABT 24 OCT 1830 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  He died young.
         4. Fanny HYATT b: ABT 14 JAN 1834 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  She is not found with her parents in 1851 and may have married or died young.
         5. Elizabeth HYATT b: ABT 18 SEP 1836 in Corlsey, Wiltshire, England
         6. Mary HYATT b: ABT 25 AUG 1839 in Corlsey, Wiltshire, England
         7. William HYATT b: 1843 in Corlsey, Wiltshire, England

      The IGI shows the following child born to Benjamin and Martha Prangley.  As no other contemporary Benjamin Prangley is known it is presumed to be the same Benjamin.  However the daughter couldn't be from another marriage as it is known that Benjamin's first wife Hannah Prangley was still alive in 1809.  Thus it is presumed that the mother shown as "Martha" could be a scribal error substituting the daughter's name, or Martha could be a mistress and the following child illegitimate.  Or it could be a different Benjamin altogether, but no such person is known.  I presently prefer the first theory.

      1. Martha PRANGLEY b: ABT 10 SEP 1809 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England

      Benjamin married finally to a woman named Mary, with whom Benjamin is residing in the 1841 census.  They are both shown as paupers.

   2. James PRANGLEY b: ABT 6 AUG 1775 in Corlsey, Wiltshire, England.  He died as a child.

   It is believed that Paul married secondly between 1775-1784 to a woman named REBECCA, whose surname is unknown.  She was born: ABT 1750 in England, and they had the following children:

   1. James PRANGLEY b: ABT 31 DEC 1780 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  He died as a child.
   2. Martha PRANGLEY b: 8 FEB 1784 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  She married in 1807 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Andrew UDELL b: 1783 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  It is not certain that this is the Martha Prangley who married Andrew Udell, but there is none other of close age.  They had the following children:
      1. Frederick UDALL b: ABT 16 OCT 1808 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
      2. Martha UDALL b: ABT 7 OCT 1810 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
      3. Maria UDAL b: ABT 6 AUG 1815 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
      4. Andrew UDALL b: ABT 31 MAR 1822 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
      5. George UDALL b: ABT 16 MAY 1823 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
   3. Mary PRANGLEY b: ABT 25 MAR 1787 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  She is believed to have died as a young woman without marrying, however this is not confirmed.
5. Mary PRANGLEY b: ABT 5 JUL 1752 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  She married Joseph UDELL b: ABT 30 JAN 1742/43 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England, twin brother of Betty Udell who married Mary's brother Paul Prangley.
6. John PRANGLEY b: 1755 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  The Corsley parish records are missing for the years 1753-55, so it is not certain that this is the birth family for John, but after many years of researching it is agreed by this team to be the most likely family to place John.  He married firstly to Sarah GEORGE and secondly to Sarah STEEDS.  Their descendants are shown below as BRANCH #2.
7. Solomon PRANGLEY b: ABT 19 OCT 1756 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  He married on 18 AUG 1777 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Elizabeth VINER and had the following children:
   1. Richard PRANGLEY b: 1 JAN 1775 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  He married Susanna NOBLE b: ABT 1795 in England.  In 1841 they are found living in Woodlands, Frome, Somerset,  and Richard is shown as born outside the county. It appears that the most of this family were baptized on the same day.  Richard and Susanna had the following children:
      1. Mary PRANGLEY b: 18 OCT 1814 in Frome, Somerset, England
      2. Miriam PRANGLEY b: 11 JUL 1817 in Frome, Somerset, England
      3. Martha PRANGLEY b: 10 OCT 1820 in Frome, Somerset, England
      4. George PRANGLEY b: 10 MAY 1823 in Frome, Somerset, England.  He is believed to be the same George found in 1881 living in London, Middlesex, England working as a carpenter and with a wife, Elizabeth. However this relationship is not confirmed.  He is believed to have married ELIZABETH b: 1817 in Westminster or Shoreditch, Middlesex, London and had the following child:
         1. Sarah PRANGLEY b: 1846 in Lambeth, Surrey, England
   2. Leah PRANGLEY b: ABT 27 FEB 1780 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
   3. Grace PRANGLEY b: 1790 in Frome, Somerset, England
8.     Martha PRANGLEY b: ABT 28 JUN 1761 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.

John Prangley was born in 1755 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  As the parish records are missing for the year of his birth there is no surviving record of his birth.  He is believed to be the son of Joseph and Mary Prangley/Pranglin of BRANCH #1 above.  John was a butcher in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.  John Prangley is listed in the papers relating to leases of land from Lord Weymouth, 2nd Viscount -- "John PRANGLEY (at Leigh's Green) for a cottage and garden (10 luggs) 1s (leased to John PRANGLEY the 21 July 1783)."  John Prangley married firstly on 18 May 1777 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Sarah GEORGE, and secondly on 26 DEC 1783 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Sarah STEEDS.  Sarah George is believed to have died during the birth of their third child, Jane Prangley.  Sarah Steeds was born 12 JUL 1761 in Downhead, Somerset, England as the daughter of Edward and Mary Ann STEEDS.  Edward Steeds was a butcher from Downhead.  John and Sarah Steeds may have moved to Frome, Somerset, England just prior to the birth of their last son, Moses.  John Prangley had the following descendants:

         He married to Mary Ann STANKEY (Starkey?).  She was born in 1853 in England.  Their first son's birth record in Lincoln County, Ontario records Arthur's profession as "Insurance Agent".  Arthur is found with his family in 1880 in Rensselaer, NY, working as an insurance agent.  Arthur is found living nearby to James Wright Prangley shown above in BRANCH #4 above.  That John has a brother named Arthur, but their birth dates do not match.  It is not known how John and Arthur are related.  It may not be safe to assume that they are brothers, although it appears that they probably immigrated together.  It could be that the IGI has the wrong birth date for Arthur.  They had the following children:

         1.     Arthur George Prangley, b: 6 APR 1875 in St. Catharines, Lincoln County, Ontario, Canada. Shown in the 1880 census to be a son of this family.  The 1890 census records his parents as being both born in England and Arthur's birth place is recorded as "English Canada".  He is residing with his wife's family in 1890 in Washington DC.  He married Blanche I.       1. Frank PRANGLEY b: 28 SEP 1849 in Blunt Street, Frome, Somerset, England.  Frank Prangley is found in 1881 at 75 High Street in Bedwellty, Monmouth, Wales working as a shoemaker. He is shown as being born in Bristol County, England, which is adjacent to Somerset, however the 1891 census corrects this error and shows his birth place as Frome, Somerset. In 1891 they are living in Abergavenny, Monmouth, Wales. According to descendant, Vanessa Firmston (nee Prangley), "The info we have is that Frank was a bit of a B..... Edward was put into a workhouse at a young age, and took off overseas.... travelled thru Canada, America, etc. His brother Elisha was in the British Army and posted to India." This could explain why the 1901 census shows Frank and his wife living separately -- Frank in Abertillery, Monmouth and Maria elsewhere in Monmouth.  The list of Dr. Bernardo's Home Children who were shipped to Canada as "orphans" includes an Albert Prangley, age 15, shipped in 1889 on the SS Sardinian, along with his brother Thomas, age 13. They match exactly to the sons below and would give clarity to the preceding family tradition.  This branch is being researched by Vanessa Firmston (nee Prangley).
         Frank married Maria HILL b: ABT 1850 in Stourbridge, Worcester, England.  They had the following children:
         1. Edward Albert PRANGLEY, b 1875 in Stourbridge, Worcester, England.  According to family tradition he was placed into a workhouse by his father, but it is now known that he was shipped to Canada with his brother Tom in 1889 among Dr. Bernardo's Children.  The 1901 Census for Canada shows an Albert Prangley, believed to be this Albert Prangley, living in High River, Alberta, Canada and working as a domestic servant to the Riley family.  He is recorded as having been born 5 JUN 1876 in Ontario.  As a domestic servant, his employers, who likely gave the census data, probably didn't know where he was born and just assumed Ontario, or, understandably, Albert may not have told them the truth.  Sometime after 1901 he immigrated to New Zealand where he is known to have married and had descendants.
         2. Tom PRANGLEY, b: 1876 in Stourbridge, Worcester, England.  He was shipped to Canada with his brother Albert in 1889 as on of Dr. Bernardo's Children.  He must have later returned to the UK as he is found in 1901 living Abertillery, Wales, working as a miner.
         3. Annie PRANGLEY, b: 1880 in Stourbridge, Worcester, England
         4. Elisha PRANGLEY, b: 1881 in Tredgar, Monmouth, Wales.  He enlisted in the British Army and served in India.  His later whereabouts is unknown.

Elizabeth PRANGLEY b: ABT 1859 in Frome, Somerset, England.  !881 census records her as married, however her son's surname is Prangley.  This means that either she married another Prangley or she may have had her son out of wedlock.  Thus the census may represent a modest, rather than truthful, entry.
