On the death certificate of Gustaf Dahlin, he listed his mother's maiden name as Maria and his father as Gustaf
Johnson. On the 1885 census of Wright County, Margaret was listed as Margaret Frisk. On Albertina's death certificate, her mother's maiden name was given as Maj or Mai. In Sweden the word Maja is
translated to mean Maria in English. Maria may have been pronounced to sound somewhat like "Mar ja". Lekåsa Parish is in Essunga Municipality, Skaraborgs County, Sweden. Lekåsa, Essunga, Västra Götaland was a Church Parish where Maja was baptized. Marja's father was listed as Gunnar Bengtson, born at Lekåsa in 1780 4/10 and he died 1853 13/10 -- with a comment in the far right column, which is possibly the "cause of death". [His wife] Husf. written first then scratched out when Gunnar died and Enk meaning widow is written - for Kerstin Andersdtr. Born at Mby (The abbreviation for Melbey which is now Stora Melby, the main church of the parish and Magra is a smaller sub church in the same parish - they are only a few miles apart). Kerstin Andersdtr's, Marja's mother's, birth was listed in the Swedish parish records as 1797 1?/7 (so a another household file or her birth record would be a good idea.) Dot. [dotter] Maja Gunnarsdotter was born at Lekåsa, on 1827 27/9. Another of the sons was Anders, [place of birth not readable] 1838 1/?8 in his moving out column he left this farm in 1853 - stated see page 72, and with Maya [Maja] and their mother the moving out columns stated see page 75, which follows below this is from page 75 of the same records. The farm is still shown as Borrås, Rote, Ambjornsgården, but obviously different houses than before - so it is likely they moved from a big house to two smaller ones. Pige, which is crossed out - so she was working at this place as a domestic helper and then married Maja Gunnarsdtr, born at Lekåsa, 1827 29/9. And above her name is written Gustaf Johansson, born at Lena, 1837 17/4 - also that he came from Lena, in 1860 with a comments to the right. [These dates match the records that were located at Annandale.] Maja's brothers children lived next door and within a few doors of her son, Gustaf Dahlin, in Wright County, MN, in the French Lake Township area. There were a lot of Gunnarson families in that area but most were the descendants of John Anderson Gunnarson or of Gustaf Gunnarson, and both were the nephews of Maja. |

| In present day time, the birthplace of Gustaf Frisk, Lena Parish is in Älvsborgs län and Mellby, which is what
is said to have later consumed into Magra was located in Skaraborgs län of Sweden. Mellby in Lidköping in the county of Västra Götaland is a church. Magra in Alingsås in the county of Västra Götaland was another church in that area. Most of the parish records for Magra are given in the Stora Mellby record files. Magra parish was in Bjärke's judicial district. On the map today [2003] Lena, Gustav's place of birth is in the municipality of Vårgårda in Västra Götaland. In Sweden all the people in the same parish went to the same church, were registered in the same books, and were buried in the same churchyard. There are also bigger units, a number of neighboring parishes formed a rural deanery (prosteri), and a number of those formed a diocese (stift), of which there are now 13 in Sweden. The spelling Gustaf is an old spelling, but may even be used today. In Sweden and the United States, Gustav is the more modern spelling because the name sounds like it is said. During the second half of the nineteenth century, it is difficult to say exactly what or which family name might be taken, because sometimes people used the old way. In other words, they would use the father's spoken name [given name] with the words son or dotter after the given name. Such as the case with Gustav/Gustaf, the children would be called Gustafson or Gustafsdotter. Sometimes they used quite a different name and it was more common to take the father's patronymic (Johansson or Jonasson after the father Jonas) and use it as their family name. And if they had three names then sometimes the last of the three would be dropped and not used at all. The farm where the Gustaf Johansson Frisk family lived was called a soldier's farm and there were only around 12 of them in the country. It was a place where the family either took care of soldiers or they grew crops for the soldiers. It was a contracted operation by the Swedish government and was usually run by an entire family and may have even included the extended family. Maja Gunnarsdotter was a maid working on the farm when she and Gustaf married. Maja was using her patronymic name. Families often took the patronymic name - meaning the father's first name but the last name often times was given because of farm or area in which they lived. It wasn't until about 1891 that Sweden started honoring surnames and switched from the old fashioned way of name keeping to the modern way of name keeping. [Ref: Bjärke, I Krig och Fred 1974, author John Winkvist] From Melby Parish, page 553: 1882 13 Nov, drängen (single laborer), Gustaf Gustafsson, born 1860 12/3, Magra, [Parish] and he left from the Utby Västergården farm, so he moved to another farm to work and earn enough money to leave. From Magra parish, page 573: 1883 24 April, Gustaf Johansson Frisk, born 1837 17/4, Lena, hustrun, (wife), Maja Gunnarsdotter, born 1827 29/8, Lekåsa, and dotter, Albertina, born 1872 23/5, Magra, 1884, and a bit further on the same page meaning she had to stay and earn her own way over was listed pigan, (meaning single domestic), Anna Kristina Gustafsdotter, born 1867 27/2, Magra. Emigration records in 1886, Gustaf's brother, Svante Johansson Frisk, was born 1840 23/8 at Långared left from the Ödegärdet farm and then in 1887 23, August, Anna Stina Svensdotter, married to this same Frisk and born at Lena, 1845 11/9 with a lot of children emigrated from the same farm --- Svante, a brother to Gustaf because is also mentioned in the Annandale, Wright Co., MN, Saint John's Lutheran Church records. He has the same patronymic and then the same soldier name - that is what Frisk is - a soldier name, means healthy and brisk. On page 576 in the Magra records - listed are the emigrants given as a listing, farm by farm, then year by year - so this was from Magra Kartegården rote, in 1891 on the 28th of March, drången, [farmer] August Frisk, born 1874 13/9, so if he belonged to either of the Frisk families above - he was left with someone until they could afford to get him - but odd that he had no patronym - but by 1891 they were starting to use surnames. August Frisk was located in 1900 on the census in Otisco Township in Waseca County, MN Federal Census. [From microfiche of Magra A1:8] Household Record (Husföhörslängder), 1863-1873, page 2/5, Borrås Rote (rote meaning area or segment.) Borrås has a number of different named farms as part of the Borrås area. Borrås Rote, Page 34, Ambjornsgården (garden means small farm, obviously belonging to Ambjorn at one time) E?tmark (don't know what the word is for sure) Gustaf Johansson, born 1837 17/4, at Lena Parish, Husf. (for husfrau or wife) Maja Gunnarsdotter, born 1827 29/9, at Lekåsa. Dotter, Anna Christina, born 1867 27/2, she has a squiggle in the column for place of birth - the squiggle works like ditto marks meaning she was born at Lekåsa like her mother. Son, Gustaf, born 1860 12/3; Anna, born 1864 22/12, and to the right states she died in '64; and Albertina, born 1872 23/5. [Research Note: Albertina's birth date is one day different from the record that was located in Minnesota but the others are all a match and the same as the records located in Minnesota.] From microfiche of Magra Parish, Sweden, A1:7 Household Record (Husföhörslängder), 1852-1863, page 2/4, Page 87, Borrås Rote Ambjornsgården (86 is the Soldier farm, No 352 - every major farm group had to support their quota of soldiers - so there was always a "soldier's farm" where they lived and the rest of the farm helped out when they were off soldiering - and paid so much to help support the soldiers and their families) Maja's parents were also listed in the parish records. Same page but lower under the word Torp - which means "little place" so it was likely just a cottage with space for a garden. Anders Gunnarson, born Lekåsa, 33 16/8 H. (another abbreviation for Husfru or wife) Annika Jonasdtr, born at Melby, 25 29/10. They both came here in 1859 from page 80 and both were working - his name is barley readable and at the top of the page the soldier was called Blad born at Dahl). Anders and Annika had a son Gustaf with the squiggle again so maybe born here in 60 8/5 so obviously it was 1860 Then in another house their mother Kerstin Andersdtr. Born at Melby 1797 15/9 It also shows Maya was with her mother before she moved in 1859 -- place not readable. Gustaf Johanson Frisk was listed in the church records as from the Parish of Lena in Elfsborgs, Sweden and was born April 17, 1837. According to the parish records of Saint John's Lutheran Church in Annandale, Wright County, MN, he was received as certificate # 5. The record also states that he removed to Center City, MN but does not give a date of that removal. Listed was Magra Fors, Elfsb, Sweden in 1883. And the record also states that he married in 1860. Certificate number 5 was received on June 10, 1886, and dated as April 24, 1883 as the arrival time. In another place Magra was the listed parish in the district or county of Älvsborg, Sweden. In present times Magra Parish rules under Alingsås Kommun [community] in the county of Västra Götalands län. And Magra Parish is included with Stora Mellby in the county of Älvsborg län. Kommun [community]. [Kommon also means municipality or township.] And today on the map [2003], Alingsås is where Stora Melby is located in present times. Another record located in the same book as given above but on another page listed Svante Johansson Frisk, Aug 8, 1840, Magra, Elfab Lin, came in 1886, Sweden. From Gustaf's son, Gustav Dahlin's, naturalization papers it was learned that the Frisk/Johnson family came in to the American port of New York and from there they travelled on to Minnesota. They must have arrived in the fall of 1882 or the fall of 1883, because all the records located gave either 1882 or 1883 as the arrival time. Gustav Dahlin stated on his naturalization papers that they came in November of 1882. His obituary stated that he came in 1882 and that the family first arrived at Cokato, MN, and then moved to Annandale. In 1885, the Frisk[e] family is still using the name of Frisk[e] and the record appears as to follow: 1885 Minnesota State Census listed in Albion Twp., of Wright County, MN, head of household, Gustave Friske as age 48, and born in Sweden. And also listed was his wife, Margaret, age 60, born in Sweden. Three children were listed. They were given as Gustave, son, age 27, [26], born in Sweden; Christine, dau, age 18, born in Sweden; and Albertina, dau, age 13, born in Sweden. They were in house # 128 and in Albion Twp., in Wright County on page 19. In 1885 Gustav's age calculates that he was born about 1837, which matches with the Saint John's Lutheran Church records, the cemetery stone, the death certificate, and the 1910 Federal Census of Chisago Co., MN. The Saint John's Lutheran Church record listed his birth as April 17, 1837, which matched with the death certificate date of birth. In 1900, daughter, Christine is married and listed in Southside Twp. of Wright Co., MN. She is the wife of Andrew Hanson and has six children that are listed. And also in 1900, daughter, Albertina, is listed as the wife of John Johnson. She married in 1893 and is listed in Meeker Co., MN and also has children listed. Gustav Dahlin is living in Wright County and is also married with children. He has dropped his last name and is now using his first two names and is doing as his father did before him. This old Swedish custom was followed through with Gustav and Maria's children but not with their grandchildren. Minneapolis, Minnesota City Directories, 1889 and 1891 listed at 925 8th Avenue South, Gustav Johnson and Albertina Johnson and at this address were living thirteen other people including someone named Charles M. Johnson. Gustav was a laborer and Albertina was listed as a domestic laborer for their occupations. Ref: Minneapolis City Directory, 1889, 1890, and 1891 In 1910, Gustaf Johnson, a widower, is located at an old folk's home, which was called Bethesda in Chisago County. That record reads: 1910 Federal Population Schedules, US Census, Bethesda Old Folks Home, Chisago Co., MN, Chisago Lake Twp., listed Gustaf Johnson, inmate, age 73, widower, born in Sweden and he stated that both of his parents were born in Sweden. He spoke Swedish. He could not read nor write English. From this record it is learned that his wife was already deceased. In the year of 1915 Gustav died. His death certificate reads: Chisago Co., MN, death records stated that Gustav Johnson, widower, was born April 17, 1837, and died March 3, 1915 in Chisago Lake Twp of Chisago County, MN. The death certificate stated that he was a farmer and that he died of chronic asthma. He was born in Sweden as was his mother and father also born in Sweden. His father was Jonas Frisk and his mother was Annika Juduansen/Gudmanson. The physician was F. A. Mattson and the undertaker was A. Bloom. The register was R. W. Anderson of Lundstrom, MN, and the certificate was filed on March 6, 1915. The tombstone record states the same death date and birth date as the death certificate and there is no other Johnson family member was buried near his grave. He was buried at West Green Lake Cemetery, Chisago Co., MN. It appears that the stones on the same row as his are all stones of people who had once lived at Bethesda Old Folks Home in Chisago Co., MN. |

Listed was Husten [husband], Anna Kristina Johnansdotter. [Research note: Husten indicates that Anna was the wife of Gustaf Dahlin] Anna Dahlin joined the church on 5/10/1886 at Annandale, MN. Children were listed to follow: son, Anton Salomon, born August 16, 1888, and he was confirmed on August 6, 1902 at Saint John's; another son was listed as Johan Martin, and he was born March 6, 1887, and his christening was on June 29, 1902; dotter [daughter] Adina Emilia, was born April 23, 1891, and she was baptized June 16, 1891 and confirmed Aug 19, 1905; dotter [daughter] Amanda Ansgaria was born Sept 3, 1894, baptized March 6, 1895 and confirmed April 6, 1911; dotter [daughter] Hilda Christina was born Feb 11, 1901, and baptized was on Feb 13, 1901 and confirmed July 9, 1916; and dotter [daughter] Anna Louisa was born Feb 11, 1901, baptized Feb 13, 1901, and she was confirmed on July 9, 1916. Amanda Ansgaria of the Saint John's Lutheran Church records has written Mrs. Olean is written behind her name. The birth record for Amanda differs some from the date listed in the church records. Wright Co., MN, the 1st papers of Gustaf Dahlin, born in Sweden, 1860, landed at the port of New York on or about November of 1882. His naturalization was dated Oct 23, 1888. 1895 Wright Co., MN, French Lake, listed head of household in the Minnesota State Census as Gustaf Dahlin, age 35, born in Sweden. His wife, Anna, age 35, was born in Sweden. Children are listed as John, son, age 8, born in MN; Solomon, son, age 6, born in MN; and Edina A., daughter, born in MN, age 5. The Federal Population Schedules, US Census, of 1890 was burned in a fire, but in 1900 Gustaf Dahlin was listed as head of household. He was given as Gust Dahilen [sic], a male, born March 1860. He was age 40 and had been married for 14 years. He was born in Sweden and listed that both of his parents were also born in Sweden. He was a farmer living in French Lake Township of Wright County, MN. He stated that he came to the US in 1891. Annie C., his wife, was age 40 and she had been married 14 years. She was born in Sweden and both of her parents were also born in Sweden. Children listed were given as John M., age 13, born March of 1887 in MN; Anthony S., born Aug of 1888 and was age 12, born in MN; Edna E., was age 9, born in 1891, and in MN; and Amanda, was age 4, born June of 1895, in MN. Neighbors were John Gunderson [sic] and wife Matilda; John Gunderson and Sophia; and next door was Henrick Matson who was born 1841 in Sweden. The 1910 Federal Population Schedules of the US Census listed in French Lake, MN, of Wright County, head of household, Gustaf Dahlin, age 50, born in Sweden. He and his wife, Annie, were both age 24 when they married, and both of their parents were born in Sweden. He came to the US in 1882 and speaks English. He is a farmer who does general farming. His wife, Annie, was age 48, and has had 7 children and had 6 living children. It was listed that she was born in Sweden and that she speaks English. Children were listed as John M., age 22, son, born MN; Anton S., son, age 21, born MN; Edna E., age 18, born MN, daughter; Amanda A., age 14, daughter, born MN; Hilda C., age 9, daughter, born in MN; and Annie L., age 9, born MN, daughter. The Dahlin family lived four doors from John A. Gunnarson and his wife Matilda in 1910. And they also lived near Gustaf Gunnarson and his wife Annie. John and Matilda were members of the Saint John's Lutheran Church and she was nee a Johnson, and born March 7, 1873. John Gunnarson came from Magra Parish, Älvsborg, Län, Vastergotland, Sweden, as did the Johnson/Frisk family. He was born Oct 27, 1863. She came from Varmland in 1893, from the Lekvattnets area of Sweden. That is the same location in Sweden that John William, Henrick, and August Johnson was listed as a residents. In 1910 the Gustav Dahlin lived next door to Charles Malberg and two doors from Axel Gunnarson. Sven Anderson Malberg and his wife Hanna were listed in the early records of the Saint John's Lutheran Church of Annandale. John E. Gunnarson, another Swede, who was age 43, and his wife Sofia, age 43, lived just two or three doors away. And about 10 doors away was the home of Nicholas Dokken, Norwegian born, and his wife Annie, age 48, who was born in Sweden. Their large household of children included Elmer Dokken, age 13. In 1920 Gustav Dahlin was living in the same neighborhood he'd lived for a number of years in Wright County. That record reads: 1920 Federal Population Schedules, US Census, Wright County, MN, Southside Twp., house # 88, family # 98, Dahlin, Gustav, age 59, farmer, born in Sweden, speaking Swedish, and both parents were born in Sweden. his wife was listed as Anna C., age 59, born Sweden, and she was speaking Swedish, and she came to the US in 1882. And also Gustav came to the US in 1882. One child was listed and was given as Hilda C., age 17, born in Minnesota, and living next door is John Dalhin, age 32, single, farmer, born in MN. He stated that his parents were both born in Sweden. In 1930 Gustav Dahlin was listed in Southside. That record reads: 1930 Federal Population Schedules, US Census, Wright County, MN, Southside Twp., house # 45, family # 45, Dahlin, Gust, was age 70, born in Sweden, and both of his parents were listed as born in Sweden. He was a farmer and spoke Swedish. His wife was Anna, age 69, born in Sweden. She listed that both of her parents were born in Sweden. She spoke Swedish and there were no children listed who were living in the house. 1936, Newspaper article reads: 50th Anniversary is celebrated by Annandale couple: Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Dahlin of Annandale, Minn., recently observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary at Annandale. In addition to their six children and 15 grandchildren, more than 200 friends and relatives attended the golden wedding celebration. The couple was married at Crow River, Minn., and have made their home at Annandale ever since their marriage. [From the scrapbook files of Vivian (Weller) Kling] Saint John's Lutheran Church records state that Gustaf Dahlin died in Wright Co., MN, and that his funeral was on April 17th, 1942 at the church. He was buried at the Saint John's Lutheran Church Cemetery. The death certificate for Gustaf Dahlin is stated on Certificate # ID# 1942-MN-017468 and that he died April 13, 1942 in Wright Co., MN. His father was Gustaf Johnson and his mother was Marie. Anton Dahlin gave information, and states that Gustaf was buried Annandale, MN, a widow and wife was named Anna. He was 82 yrs, 1 month, and 1 day old. Obituary, Annandale Newspaper, Advocate: Gustaf Dahlin was born in Magra, Wesergottland, Sweden, March 12, 1860 and died at his home near Annandale, April 13, 1942, at the age of 82 years, one month, and one day. He grew up to manhood in Sweden and came to America in 1882, first to Cokato, and then to vicinity of Annandale, where he has lived ever since. Memorial Day, 1886, he married Anna Kristina Johansdotter, who passed away one and a half years ago. When St John's Lutheran Church was organized, Oct 5, 1886, he became a charter member, and has been a member ever since. He was a hard working, home loving, pleasant Christian man. He leaves to mourn his departure two sons four daughters, John Dahlin, Anton Dahlin, Edna Spangrude, Amanda Olean, Hilda Johnson and Louisa Anderson. One child died in infancy. He also leaves 15 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Albertina Johnson. One sister has passed away. The funeral service was held in St John's Lutheran Church, Friday, April 17, Pastor Alex Sand officiating. The Frisk/Johnson side of the family were members of the 1875-1893 exodus when 493,000 people left Sweden for the USA.
Cost of passage to the Great Lakes region from Sweden was about $50.00. The probable route of travel was from Goteborg to New York, to Albany and then to Buffalo for a lake steamer to the great lakes
area or to Chicago or Milwaukee. Once the ship set sail, the voyage took about two weeks.
Albertina was just a child when she left her homeland of Sweden, and about 10 years old at the time. And once in Wright Co., MN, she was registered on the 1885 census of the State of Minnesota as a child of age 13 stating that she had come to the states in 1882. She was listed in the Gustaf Frisk household along with her siblings Anna Christina and Gustaf and also along with her parents Gustaf and Margaret. Through research it was learned that Gustaf, her brother, dropped his surname of Frisk and started using his first two names, Gustaf Dahlin. Her sister was listed in public record as Gustafsdotter and also as Anna Christiana Johnson. Albertina was listed as Albertina Johnson on her marriage record and her death record listed her father as Gustaf Johnson and Mai and her maiden surname as Dahlin. Her brother's death certificate listed his parents as Gustaf Johnson and Maria as his mother. Swede families were often confused about what name that they should use after they arrived in the United States. So with this family of men dropped their last name or
surname and used their first two names and the women, Albertina and Anna Christiana, took their father's middle name as their surname. |
