THE SWEDISH SIDE OF MY

MINNESOTA HERITAGE

Värmland, Sweden

Värmland, Sweden is a parish that is bound on the north by the province of Dalarna, on the south by the provinces of Västergötland and by Dalsland, on the southeast by Lake Vänern, on the west by Norway and on the east by the provinces of Västmanland and Närke.

The province of Värmland is in coextensive with the county of Värmland. The Albertina Johnson Family lived right above where the large lake is situated in Magra Parish, Skaraborg Län, Västra Götaland, Sweden. And John Johnson's family lived below the lake area in Norra Lekvattnet Soken, Varmland, Sweden.

Notes:

Värmland is a forest province, especially in the northern part, which is about sixty percent covered by evergreens. The area where my family lived had forest and lakes and is a very beautiful part of Sweden and it is very much like some of the northern parts of Minnesota.

Notes:

In the records that were located for Johan Mattsson ties were given to his extended family as well as his immediate family. He died before his children were grown and since his wife had died before he died, their children were listed in several different households.

They had four known children, Brita Marie, John William, Henrick, and August. [Ref: Page 110, Household Exemption, Norra Lekvattnet Parish, Varmland, Sweden, 1851-1855] That file indicates that Johan moved to North Lekvattnet in 1854.

In North Lekvattnet, in the records of 1851 to 1855, Johan Mattsson was listed as born in 1828 in Lekvattnet. On that page is also listed Per [Pehr] Mattsson born 1814 in Saco? Notes:

Following the naming pattern of the Swedish custom, and from the name of John Johnson and the way it was spelled, it is known that his father was named Johan. The early records listed him as Johan, but he later used just the name of John Johnson.

Albertine was using the name Johnson, too. Hers is a more complicated situation. Her father was Gustaf Johanson Frisk and her mother was Maja or Maria Gunnarsdotter.

Her Frisk named father later started going by Gustaf Johnson.

Esther and Rex are pictured in the photo - Esther Emelia Johnson

Evelyn is pictured L to R third person in second row. Evelyn Christina Johnson

Hjalmer Gustaf Johnson "Jack" is pictured in wheel chair, Jennie is standing next to Jack. Back row is Jack's step-daughter, Shirley and friend.

In 1876 John Johnson was listed in his father's, [Johan Mattson, Rönberg] household as born June 5, 1865 in Lekvattnet, Sweden. His brothers listed were given as Henrik, born Jan 15, 1870, and August born Feb 26, 1867, [In the US records his birth was listed as the 25th] and also there was a sister named, Brita Maria, born May 2, 1862. And all were born in Lekvattnet. Johan Mattsson is listed as born 1828, of Rönberg, and was born in Lekvattnet. The record states that he married Jan 29, 1860 and that his wife died Nov 14, 1875. It also states that Johan Mattsson died August 27, 1876 in Lekvattnet. Pehr Mattsson was born 1814, in April, was also living in the Mattsson household. His record adds more information. He is listed elsewhere with his mother, brothers, and other family members that take the Mattsson family back another two or three generations. That addition information was added to this study. [Ref: Page 110, Household Exemption, Norra Lekvattnet Parish, Varmland, Sweden, 1876-1880] From this study it was learned that they had also lived in Rönberg, which is a parish near where they were living at the time of the household exemption record was taken. And also it was learned from that same record that Andres Mattsson had lived in Romhalla previously. [Ref: Page 110, Household Exemption, Norra Lekvattnet Parish, Varmland, Sweden, 1876-1880]

John Johnson's mother died November 14, 1875 and his father died August 27, 1876, so in or about 1877, he was located in Norra [North] Lekvattnet, Varmland, Sweden living with an uncle, in the Anders Mattsson household. John was listed as born June 6, 1865 and born in Lekvattnet. He is living with his father's brother and his mother's sister, an aunt and uncle. Also listed in the house are Henrick, born Jan 15, 1870, [Rönberg]; and August, born Feb 15, 1867, and they were both born in Lekvattnet. The head of the household was Andres Mattson, [Romhalla], who was born Jan 1, 1821, and he was born in Lekvattnet. His wife, Annika, was nee Annika Hendriksdotter, and she was born June 29, 1822 in Lekvattnet. Annika was a sister to John's mother, Karen. They had children Jon [1857], Annika [1859], Anders [1862], and Kerstin [1867] and so they were all near the same ages as John, Henrick, and August. John's sister Brita Marie Johansdotter was still living at this time but was not listed in the Mattsson household. It is likely that she went to South Lekvattnet to live because she was located in that area in 1890. Also mixed in with this information is the birth and name of another relative, Mattes Jonston, born 1815 in Lekvattnet and Hilda Feturdet, maid, born 1851. [Ref: Page 92, Household Exemption, Norra Lekvattnet Parish, Varmland, Sweden, 1876-1880]

In or about 1879, Johan Johansson, born June 5, 1865, Henrik Johansson, born Jan 15, 1870, and August Johansson, born Feb 25, 1867 were listed as born in Lekvattnet, in the Norra Lekvattnet Parish of the Andres Mattson household. Ref: Page 109, Household Exemption, Norra Lekvattnet Parish, Varmland, Sweden, 1876-1880]

In or about 1880, John, Henrick, and August are listed in the Anders and Annika (Henriksdotter) Mattsson household. Andres and Annika have John, Annika, Anders, and Kristin listed. Johan Johansson, born June 5, 1865, Henrik Johansson, born Jan 15, 1870, and August Johansson, born Feb 25, 1867 were listed as born in Lekvattnet. [Ref: Page 75, Household Exemption, Norra Lekvattnet Parish, Varmland, Sweden, 1876-1880]

In 1883, John Johanson and his siblings were listed in Sodra [South] Lekvattnet in the Mattis Anderson household, Mattis was born 1915 and his wife Karen was born 1817. They had two small children, maybe grandchildren in the house, one was born in 1883 and one in 1885. At the bottom of the page was listed a younger Mattis Andersson and he was born 1858 and his wife was name Elizabeth and she was born in 1860. They had two children, Anna Sofia born in 1856 and a son Mattis? born in 1864. They were born in Lekvattnet and are probably relatives of John, Henry, and August Johnson's mother, their mother's mother. She was nee Brita Andersdotter and was married to Henrik Jonsson.

It is interesting to note that in 1877 Martin Johnson and Maria Larsdotter, later of Wright Co., MN, where living in Sweden next door to John, Henrik, and August Johnson and their family. John, Henrik and August sons of Johan Mattsson were listed in their father's house as motherless children. The household records of Norra [North] Lekvattnet Soken [Parish], Torsby, Varmland, Sweden or in other words of Lekvattnets kapellförs stated their birth dates and all of their birth dates matched the dates that were collected from Minnesota resources. But what was not known is that they had a sister that was not mentioned in the Minnesota records, but it appears that she died fairly young but sometime after their mother had died.

Located on the Swedish listing of households for Lekvattnet Soken,Torsby, Varmland, Sweden, was Johan Mattsson, [Enk written before his name, meaning widow] born 1828, in Lekvattnet. He married Jan 29, 1860 and Nov 14, 1875 is the date next to that so that may be the date he became a widower. Children that were listed are given as Brita Maria, May 2, 1862, born Lekvattnet; Johan, born June 5, 1865; August, born February 26, 1867, and Henrick, born January 15, 1870. At the bottom was listed Pig [Maid] Brita Jonsdotter February 16, 1829, [forr (birth): Haptbkeh Mabra?]. It isn't known who the maid was that was listed but the others are John and his brothers. Above the father's name of Johan is written Rönberg, Lekvattnet. The death date for Johan is given as June 27, 1887. Their mother died quite young and the children were located living with uncles, aunts and grand parents.

Martin Johnson and Maria Larsdotter were located in Annandale in the Saint John's Lutheran Church records and their obituary was located at the Wright County, MN, Historical and Genealogical Society. It listed Maria's place of birth as Lekvattnet, Sweden and stated that Martin's father was born in Norway and that record matched with the record located in the Swedish Parish files. Possibly Maria was a relative because when John returned to the US in 1893, he went to the church where Maria and John Martin Johnson were attending. He may have stayed with them for awhile or even worked for them for awhile. He and August were both single and owned no property in the US so they would have been living with someone or working on a farm in that area. Then in August of 1893 John and Albertina married. The next record located for them is in the church records in the church records where Hjalmer Gustaf Johnson is baptized.

On this 1888 document, John Johnson used the name of John Johnson and also he gave his birth year as 1864, the same year that he listed for his birth year on the 1900 Federal Census. His stone reads that he was born in 1865. His birth year of 1865 and the date of his birth was listed on his death certificate from the Minnesota State Historical Society, and his obituary read that he was born in 1865.

John Johnson filed his papers for citizenship while he was living in South Dakota. That document reads: John Johnson before the subscriber the Clerk of the District Court of Ransom County, Dakota Territory, being a Court of Record, and make oath that, he was born in Sweden on or about the year eighteen hundred and Sixty Four, that he emigrated to the United States, and landed at port of Port Huron on or about the month of May in the year eighteen hundred and eighty seven that is bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever, and particularly to the King of Norway and Sweden where of he is a subject and that he will support the constitution and Government of the United States. Subscribed and Sworn to this 5th day of November A. D. 1888: Signed: John Johnson. Ulyses Hentig, Clerk. I hereby certify that the above and foregoing is a full true and correct copy of an original revised in file in my office, witnessing hand and seal of District Court Nov 5, 1888. Ulysses Hentig, Clerk of District Court Ransom Co., S. Dakota. Lisbon the County Seat of Ransom County, South Dakota.

The Swedish Census for 1890 listed John Johnson, [Johan Johansson] down the road from August Johnson. Qvarstående was the original parish where John Johnson lived but when it became non-existent, he was listed in the Lekavattnets Soken [Parish].

From this it appears that John Johnson went back to Sweden for a short while. That census record reads: SVAR volume: 000320, Card nr: 20, Page: 22, Row: 33, Lekvattnets kapellförs was located Johan Johansson, a single man with the same birth date as John William Johnson. John Johnson put in his intention for naturalized in South Dakota in 1888 but went back to Sweden for a short time.

In Lekvattnets, Sweden in 1890, John Johnson and his brother August Johnson are located for that year on the Swedish census. So it appears that John went back to Sweden sometime after 1888 and then returned to Minnesota sometime around 1893. He married Albertina in August of 1893 and Jack was born Oct 3, 1893. August also stated that he came to the US in 1893 so 1893 is likely the correct time of John's return. Apparently he went home to take care of affairs and to bring August back to the US with him. He had filed his first papers in 1888 in Ransom County, SD, so he did first come in 1887 as he had earlier stated on a census report.

In 1890 in Lekvattnets kapellförs there were these Johansson households listed. That list is to follow:
August Johansson f. 1867-02-25, jordarbetare, [land worker] Norra Lekvattnet
Johan Johansson f. 1865-06-05, dräng, Qvarstående obefintlige utdrag ur lösdrifvarelängden: Spettungen [This means that the area he lived in became known by another name.]

According to the Saint John's Lutheran Church records of Annandale, Wright County, MN, John William Johnson's name as recorded was Johan Johanson. That record was observed on the birth record of his son, Gustaf Hjalmar on Oct 3, 1893. Kristian was stated as Johansdotter on another of the Saint John's Lutheran Church records. From those two records it is known that John William Johnson's father was named Johan Johnson or Johan Johanson.

John William Johnson came to US from Varmland, Sweden at age 21, which was probably sometime around 1886. He stated on the 1900 Federal Census of Meeker County, MN that he came to the US in 1887. He and Albertina moved from Wright County to Meeker County, in Minnesota sometime around 1894. On 1900 the census states that John William Johnson was born in 1864 but his tombstone at Ostmark Cemetery in Meeker County, MN, reads June 05, 1865 as his date of birth.

1900 Federal Population Schedules, US Census, Meeker County, MN, Kingston Twp., listed on Vol. 33, ED 113, Sheet 8, Line 59, John Johnson, age 35, born in Sweden, born June 1864.
