Notes for Per Persson Hök:

In the year of 1745 the Karl Gustav Parish was named Karungi kapellag. In 1783 it was renamed Karl Gustav. The Church books give births beginning in the year of 1793. Nedertorneå - Haparanda became a city in 1848. In 1809-09-05 that area was created as Neder-Torneå from part of Nedertorneå fg in Finland (when Sweden lost Finland to Russia after the war). Kukkola and Kattilasaari are in Norbotten and near Haparanda but Kukkola was once in Karl Gustav or Carl-Gustavs and is also near the Haparanda area and in that same municipality.

Generation No. 4

7. Pehr Pehrsson4 Höök (Per Persson3 Hök, Pehr Josepheson2 Fröki, Joseph Nilsson1)2 was born 25 Jan 1836 in Neder-Torneå, Sweden, and died Aft. 1900 in Neder-Torneå, Sweden. He married Brita Kajsa Larsdotter Forss 08 Feb 1865 in Keräsjänkkä, Neder-Torneå, Sweden, daughter of Lars Forss and Brita Henriksdottter. She was born 21 Oct 1845 in N - Kalik, Norrb 1, Sweden, and died Aft. 1900 in Neder-Torneå, Sweden.

Notes for Pehr Pehrsson Höök:

Pehr Pehrsson was listed as Peter Saari on Frank Saari's death certificate.

The general background of the Norbotten area may help to understand where the Pehr Pehrsson Hök was living and perhaps even why he was using the name of Kattilasaari. Nedertorneå, is in the county of Norrbotten, and lies just where the Torneå River flows into the Gulf of Bothnia, on the border between Finland and Sweden and Kattilasaari is a town or an area in that location. The main source of livelihood was farming and also forestry, and even with fishing as a secondary occupation. Many of the villages in the parish had a pretty large population. Nedertorneå suffered some hardships after periods of famine and war that came during the 18th and the 19th centuries. The region was seriously affected during the 1808-1809 war with Russia. Their contact with the foreign army caused a large amount of deaths that came in numbers that were even someVerdana referred to as epidemics. And then on 1809-09-05 it was created as Neder-Torneå from part of Nedertorneå fg in Finland (when Sweden lost Finland to Russia after the war). So in 1810 it transferred from Västerbottens län to Norrbottens län.

The city of Haparanda, which became a town in 1842, was founded to replace Torneå which was ceded to Russia in 1809. A new Centre for trading and for guarding of the frontier was then began and founded. This was not very good because it resulted in a Swedish-speaking class of shopkeepers and civil servants in an area where the main part of the population was Finnish-speaking. In 1850 the town had 472 inhabitants and in 1895 the population had almost tripled to 1,291 inhabitants so there was some growth there in these early days.

A complete examination of the registers have been recorded for 1818-1896 and the birth and baptismal registers for 1818-1896 with some information completed from earlier sources. The information on barns [children] and marriages is registered for 1783-1895 and the information on death and burials for 1814-1895. The migration registers have been recorded for the time between 1820 and 1895. In 1810 Västerbottens län transferred to the name of Norrbottens län.

One problem is that there are hardly any causes of deaths in the registers after 1840. Another problem is that there seems to be some peculiarities with the catechistic assessments. Many parishioners did get the same assessments, which indicates that there is some arbitrariness in the judgement. Study for this area is most interesting and adds to the knowledge that we already have about these early families of the Nedertorneå Norrbottens län areas of Sweden.

In the year of 1910 the name changed to Nedertorneå. And then on 1923-05-01 Seskarö kbfd was created. [kbfd means community or town]. On 1928-04-13 the name changed to Nedertorneå-Haparanda. Split into 3 kbfd: Nedertorneå, Haparanda and Seskarö kbfd. Haparande already had its own books for some time. It wasn't until 1975 that Nedertorneå and Haparanda kbfd joined. In 1976 Seskarö kbfd dissolved, i.e. and the area remains in Nedertorneå-Haparanda fg. So the church books give birth records from 1865 to1923.

On the 1870, 1880, and 1900 census the Pehr Hök or the Kattilasaari family was located as living in Nedertorneå Norrbottens län in Sweden. The name was reported in both ways and the record can be view below. Notice that in the brackets is the English translation of some of the Swedish words.

Notes for Willhelm Isak Saari:

William's name was either Willhelm Isak Saari or Isak Willhelm Saari. It was located in the records both ways.

From records that were obtained it is known that William Saari was naturalized in Saint Louis County, MN, July 28, 1900. His wife Hilda, stated on the federal census that she had become a citizen in 1900 but no record of that was located. Perhaps her marriage and through William's naturalization, gave her citizenship.

William Saari may have moved to Meeker County area some time around 1897 or 1898 according to the farm directory records. The 1913 Farm Directory for Meeker County, MN listed William Saari with wife Hilda and children Walter, Wilbert, and Verner. He was on Section 9 and had been 15 years in the county of Meeker. He was listed in Kingston Township with a postal address of Kimball, MN. Ref: Kurth, Ann, comp. Benton, Meeker, and Todd Counties, Minnesota Farm Directory, 1913-14. [database online] Provo, UT: Ancestry.com, 2000. Original data: Webb Publishing Co. of St. Paul, MN. Collection of Minnesota County Atlases, #175, Roll 8. The Saari family lived between the Isaacson and the Peterson families. And the Rumsey and the Lakander families lived nearby.

SomeVerdana the record states the spelling of Hilda as Hulda. And also Kenta was spelled three different ways on Hilda and William's marriage certificate. It is often seen as Kentta, Genta, and Kenta or Kanta. Not a lot is known about Hilda, but the family lore states that she came to the US with a sister.

In 1920 Hilda Saari stated that she came to the US in 1888 and that she became a citizen in 1900.
