The death of John Sullivan the venerable Main Street grocer,
occurred at --- o'clock Sunday morning at his home, corner
of Sixth and Romig streets, an attack of peritonitis
beginning last Wednesday being the immediate cause,
although he had been in poor health for several months
previous.  His wife's death occurred last July and he has not been well since then.
Mr. Sullivan was conscious to the hour of his death.

He was born in Ireland 64 years ago on the 18th of next
month.  When he was 12 (?) years old, he left Ireland
coming to this city by canal from Toledo.
He began work here as a clerk for Thomas Alyward,
some years later engaging in the grocery business on
Main Street with Michael Flannagan as a partner.
After Mr. Flannagan's death, Mr. Sullivan continued the
business which soon became one of the most extensive in
the city.  Pork p?cking was added to his business and he
was very successful in that line, also.  At the time of
his death, he was the oldest retail grocer in the city.
A brother, Daniel Sullivan, and the following children
survive; James, George and Robert Sullivan of this city,
Mrs. August Diehl and Richard Sullivan of Chicago.
He was a member of St. Mary's church of Division No. ?,
A O H, and of the Catholic Knights of America.

Mr. Sullivan was one of Lafayette's most highly esteemed
men. The funeral took place from St. Mary's church at 9
o'clock on Wednesday morning, interment in St. Mary's cemetery.
