The life story of John William Roeder by Lucinda Lipham Steen

My great grandfather , John William Roeder was born in Connesville ,Illinois on June 24,1870. His grandparents came from Germany. It was on the ship, during the trip over to America, that his father was born. His father grew up and later became a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. He married Hannah Ann Blanchard. They had four children, Henry, Chris, Mary Ann, and John William. Mary Ann died at the age of sixteen.

When John William was a year old, the family moved to Sullivan, Indiana. About a year later his

father died of pneumonia. The young wife was left with four young children. She remarried when John

William was four years old, to Karl Kramer. They had four more children, two boys, Willis and Carl, and

two girls, Nellie and Clara. Willis died in his twenties, and Carl was thirty when he died. The rest of the

children had very long lives. Chris and Henry lived into their eighties. Nellie and Clara were in their nineties when they died. My great- grandfather John William died on the day before his 96th birthday, June 23,1966.

After his mother remarried the family moved to Linton, Indiana. John attended school there until he was twelve, when he and his family moved to Clarksville, Tennessee. They lived there for two years then moved back to Indiana. When he was fourteen, his stepfather took him out of school and put him to work in a coal mine, but he did go to night school. His stepfather always picked up his paycheck and the only money he got was some money his mother gave him from the household allowance.

When he was nineteen they moved to western Kentucky, to a community called Central Grove in Ohio County. He had learned a whole lot about working in the mines and he received quite a few awards on his excellent work for ideas on safety in mining,

Soon after moving to Kentucky, his sister Nellie became very ill. A neighbor and her young daughter came to visit the sick girl. They brought a basket of food for the family. My great-grandfather saw the beautiful girl and fell in love with her. She was Minnie Lee Rowe, who later became his wife. They could not get married when they first wanted to because he did not have the money to pay for the marriage license and buy or rent a house. His stepfather still collected his salary, When my great-grandfather was twenty-one his stepfather couldn't collect his salary anymore. After John received his first month's salary, he and the blonde Minnie Lee were married .Rev. Harem Brown preformed the ceremony and also baptized him later.

A few months after their marriage, John and his wife Minnie Lee went back to Linton Indiana. Then returned to Kentucky soon after their first child , Carrie , was born in 1882.This time they settled at Render, Kentucky. After a few more years and four more children, John bought a farm and built a house on it, They moved into the new house in November 1901,before my grandmother Nell Lois, was born on February 13,1902.Four more children were born in that house to John and Minnie Lee, bringing the total to ten. The house still stands where my great-grandfather lived with his wife and ten children. Annabelle and her husband Tommy Johnston live there.

My grandmother said " One thing he used to tell us was that when they moved to Tennessee from Indiana and back. he and his brothers drove the cows and the rest of the family was in a covered wagon, The places where they would stop to spend the nights were barns or abandoned houses. There were no motels then. When it snowed his mother would come in and shake the snow from their clothes before they got up, His mother would bake bread and he and his brothers would sell it in the towns where they stopped. They also sold milk from the three cows they brought along with them."

My great-grandfather loved little children especially his own. Even though he was very, very strict on

us ,we never resented his discipline or ceased to love him, says my grandmother.

He never sent his children to church , he took them with him. He was a wonderful, Christian man and was always careful of his speech. Even in his later years he read his Bible every day.

He was a very active man. He loved to hunt, fish, ice skate, play the banjo and Jews harp. When he was in his eighties, he shot a deer while hunting in Texas with his grandsons. When he was 75,he taught my mother how to ice skate. He also loved to whittle, and was excellent at it. He could carve fans out of a single piece of wood. He also carved a lovely cane for his son-in-law from a single piece of wood .It has wooden balls incased in it. He carved sling shots , and made hickory bows for the boys in the family,

My mother says she remembers visiting her grandfather and he would go hunting before breakfast for squirrels and come back and skin them. Her grandmother would cook the squirrel's brains in the scrambled eggs. They fried the rest of the squirrel.

At his death in 1966,there were one hundred fifty-five direct descendents. They included nine children, thirty-five grandchildren, eighty-seven great grandchildren and twenty-four great great grandchildren.

He did not drink alcohol in any form but he smoked his pipe twice a day. He had a twist of tobacco in his pocket, When he wanted to smoke some tobacco, he took out his pocket knife and shaved tobacco into his pipe.

One sad event in John William's life occurred when one the children died. It was his second born. Essie was an infant, only twenty-seven days old. When he left for work that morning ,she was well and happy but she suddenly became sick and died of diphtheria. They couldn't go down in the mine to tell him that she had died, so he didn't find out until he came out of the mines to go home that evening.

A happier day was when tragedy was avoided. Always a lover of the outdoors. Great-grandfather Roeder particularly lived to go fishing. Once he and his teenaged son, Ellis were fishing on the river,

Ellis climbed down over some rocks to get to a good fishing spot. Then he slipped, dislodging a rock which fell on top of his leg breaking it and pinning Ellis beneath it. Great-grandfather Roeder picked up the big rock and moved it off Ellis's leg. Then he carried the boy home and called the doctor. Later ,when the neighbors went back to look over the place where the accident had happened , three grown, healthy men could not move that same stone.

Great-grandfather believed in being a good citizen, too. He was proud he was an American. His grand-parents had come to America to get away from the German military government of the1840's.He always voted in elections. Two of his sons served in the arms forces. One, Roy, was in the army in World War 1,and the other, Cecil, was in the Navy in World War 11.He always listened to the news. Gabriel Heater was his favorite news commentator on the radio. Great-granddaddy donated wood from his farm to help build the one room school house his children attended. At Christmas, he made a

Christmas tree stand that would turn if someone would turn a crank. So at the school Christmas program. they had a pretty turning tree all lighted with little candles.

Even after his children were grown and married and had their own families, they came back for visits.

As many as could went to Kentucky each summer to spend a few days. This was not easy because his children lived in Texas, and Illinois, as well as in Kentucky. My mother says visiting her grandfather

as a child was very much like the Waltons on TV. She remembers two family reunions in particular .One

was in 1934 just as the nation was coming out of the depression. It was the first time in several years

that all the family had been together.

Mother remembers that two of her girl cousins broke out with chicken pox. So when all the company

came for the big dinner, the cousins had to stay at the barn with the mules and the cows. Mother sneaked

away from the crowd and went to be with her cousins, but she didn't get chicken pox.

50th Anniversary

Another happy occasion was when John and Minnie Lee celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

They were married 50 years in August,1941.Children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren gathered

from across the nation to help celebrate. One of the uncles had caught a sixty pound catfish and it was cooked outdoors to help serve the guests. Boards were placed across saw horses to make ling tangles to place all the food brought by family and friends . It was spread beneath the big shade trees in the front

yard, Cars from twenty states were parked in the side yard all the way to the barn.

Great-grandmother died from a heart attack January 2,1945. Family and friends said she died from

worrying about her son, son -in-law, and eight grandsons in the service, She was 71 years old.

Lucinda Lipham Steen is the fourteen year old granddaughter of Nell Roeder Lipham and the daughter of Dr, and Mrs., John Warren Steen of Nashville ,Tennessee,
